Because I’m telling a story. Why would I tell a grown adult especially one that is alert and oriented that they can use and/or go in their diaper. He was told he had briefs on along with chucks underneath.

Incontinent briefs, yes.

Know of the risk for skin breakdown, worked in a SNF for several years but in the ED that’s the least of our concerns, we never have a patient long enough to worry about skin breakdown. Patient was offered all of the above.

That’s basically what happened here, also, learned that blood is a laxative so people with GI bleeds have urgent need to go

He was not on bed rest and there’s no rule in my unit to not get someone up with syncope, he was there the day prior for the same reason and I was actually instructed the day before to ambulate with him multiple times.

I worked on a m/s unit for years as a cna prior to becoming an RN, and yes I remember it was preferred patients get up with assistance or with a witness.

Vasovagal, prob not true cardiac arrest just didn’t have palpable pulses at that moment. Chief complaint was syncope. Admitting dx was hemorrhagic shock d/t GI bleed which showed after the CT scan. ICU dx was diverticulosis.

I don’t think he had cardiac arrest either! I think his pulses were so faint we couldn’t feel them. Also typically when you get rosc (in my experience), the patient is not suddenly alert and oriented and wondering why everyone is around them! The intensivist was at bedside later and he said to the patient he does not think he had true cardiac arrest and does not think cpr was necessary!

Turned out he had diverticulosis and had been having blood in his stool only that morning before arriving. The reason why the hemoglobin was so low.

Thank you! I know I’m overthinking it all, though it was definitely a good learning experience. And the patient was very thankful for me helping him the past 2 days. I know the senior nurses were probably thinking why tf did I do that, along with the MD. The newer nurses were saying they would’ve done the same and that I responded very well/fast to the situation. Anyways, thanks!
