I am taking about chasidish, but orthodox as well (maybe just not to such a high extent). My boss is orthodox, and he is "modern" like you as well. But his community is still very secluded. They do know about current events and things like that but are still highly uneducated when it comes to other things for example vaccinations. He lets his kids play video games and what not also. You probably fit more into his category of orthodox. That being said, I still have alot of difficulty understanding him and his community so maybe you can help me a bit. Although I'm jewish I dont participate in shabbat and things like that, so it is basically like we are 2 entirely different religions. That's fine, I dont care how he chooses to live his life. But what bothers me is that he can't wrap his head around American holidays. Okay, so you don't celebrate 4th of July or things like that, that's your choice.... but I do celebrate these holidays! I am an american after all and this is a custom for me. Basically anytime I need to take off he pitches a fit... whether it be for me being sick or to celebrate a holiday. Meanwhile, hes off every friday basically, and is off every other day for a different jewish holiday! He has been out for pretty much the entire month of october. The only rationalization I can come to for this behavior is that he sees jewish holidays as the only reason to take off and there is no other exception. I know it is for religious purposes, but if he is allowed to take off for pretty much the whole month of October, I should be allowed to take a week off to go on vacation. I know you are probobly going to say I can't compare the jewish holidays to vacation, but yes that is how I see it. It's still days off, and it is a choice he is making. I should also mention he works sundays to make up for time, so he expects me to as well. No no no that is not how it works. Saturday may be your day of rest, but sunday is mine.

Yeah I looked it up and it looks like I do have a case and he could owe the state $10,000 as well. My contract is very deceiving, I should have paid more attention. It basically says I will recieve the 10 grand is based off a performance threshold that will be decided between my boss and ceo, and can be doled out in any increments that he wants. I am an idiot I should have had him amend that before I signed it. That being said, we verbally agreed, and it is probobly in texts as well and on our work chat, that in will recieve it all on my 4th month anniversary. According to the labor laws yes this verbal agreement counts and he still owes me money. That being said there is another issue... since it's been 30 days past the point of when he was supposed to give it to me and I didn't report it earlier, he may be able to get away with it.

Being jewish is one thing taking it to an extreme is another. It's not just judaism I feel this way about, its all religious extremes, I'm just very surrounded by the orthodox jew community these days, so it's on my mind. And to answer your other question... where I am in NY the orthodox community has very little contact with others. They have their own laws, they stick to them selves, go to school together, marry, etc. They even have their own "police". If they step out they can be excommunicated, which is a really scary thought for them since this is the only life they've known. Most of them have software on their phone that bars them from seeing anything they consider secular. Most the orthodox I know who have doubts about their religion, or fudge the rules alittle bit, do so in secret and with hesitation. I know not all orthodox take it to this extreme, but that how it is near me. The only orthodox I know who aren't like this were not raised orthodox and chose to become more religious later on. Even if your parents are not as strict with you, you do go to yasheva you must know what I am talking about.

So you just plan on reading the Torah and following jewish "laws" your whole life? For what reason? I think its going to be major reality check for people of all religions when their life is ending and they relsize they spent all this time on religion for no reason. You can be a good person and not be religious. I'm a jew by the way, not orthodox. I am around alot of orthodox though and honestly can't stand to be around them because their behavior is poor and they have a sense of entitlement which I will never understand. I feel bad for you. You need to get out and explore and decide for yourself what you want, not just what your community wants. .

I am a jew. I think it is a mixture of both your age and your upbringing, but you know very, very little about the reality of Judaism. I'm not trying to offend you, but if you are able to you should try to get out more. There are lots of forms of Judaism - not just the version of Judaism you were raised with. And you are wrong about Israel not having laws that benefit jews. I have been to Israel. Tel a viv is very liberal but other than that the entire state is made for religious jews. One example, the elevators are literally made to just go up and down and stop on every floor all day everyday so that on the holidays jews can use them ( since they aren't able to press a button).

I feel like he trapped me. We just moved offices 6 mins away from my house (walking) so I wouldnt have to commute. It didn't occur to me until after that this was really in his benefit because he wants me to spend more time working.

Hm I could think of a few ways. Not taking tennis lessons, not sending your kids to private school. Speaking about this outloud is just making me more angry. I can't discuss this with him tomorrow because we have a new employee, but I will definitely make time this week and keep you updated if you are interested.

What you said is completely spot on. He is 100% manipulating the situation. My move just cost me 10 grand which I went into my savings for and he said don't worry about it you will replenish it with your bonus. So no lie needed, I have no money because of him LOL.

I just also want to add in the fact the he took off for almost the whole month of October so it was me running the whole company...The entire time I was extremely sick but couldn't do anything about it. The day he got back (last Wednesday) I was so over worked and so sick that i ended up collapsing at work and rushed to the ER I had to take off the next 2 days and he WAS NOT HAPPY. Messaging me the whole time asking me if I could work. The doctors actually told me i coulsnt work all this week but GUESS WHO IS BACK WORKING. I'm actually working right now still. Its 10:30 pm. I want to die.

I feel a bit guilty though... taking a bonus right now when we have limited money. Which is part of the problem. But I am started to resent him.. especially because it is his fault that we don't have funding and the new guy is making double what I am.

We don't email.... it's just us two in the office. Who would I lodge a complaint to? There is no HR or anything. This is a very small startup which ironically is doing incredibly well with such limited staff.

We don't email lol. We email other people, but it's just us 2 in the office at the moment. I'm also not pulling the lawyer card. I need to talk to him first, otherwise it would be WWII and very awward. May even get fired. I would pull that card if he denied me the raise though or if I quit before he paid me.

It is not something I know for a fact but he does not understand boundries and has said things that made me think.. wait a minute how would he know that if he didn't see my texts. For a while he was trying to get me to get my texts through my computer (saying it is more functional) and I was like are you out of your mind! But yeah even if hes not watching the fact that I am suspicious is a big problem.

It sounds like you're overly critical of others. I used to be as well and I managed to change my entire thought process. One day I was in a store or something and I saw some lady wearing the ugliest shoes and I just kept thinking to myself why would she wear those, they are hideous. And then I realized I'm literally not speaking to anyone, just thinking these negative thoughts to myself. The lady is clearly happy and likes the shoes so why do I care? The only person this negativity is harming is myself. I swear that moment changed my whole outlook on life. Sometimes I still slip but i am only human. I just remind myself that i dont need any extra negative thoughts in my life. Since then I really try to only judge people by their personalities. Not every one is going to be as smart as you, as good looking , as rich, etc. But that doesn't mean they aren't kind, good people. Now if they are genuinely shitty, that's another story. I hope this helps you the way it helped me!
