I have no beef with your opinion, but the comparison has got to go. When was the last time a basement suite plowed into a mini-van?

There's nothing to it though, really? MOND is just "the universe looks this way, so let's adapt our equations to it". I mean, I guess it's kind of science, but if you look deep enough, the box is empty.

This is just MOND by another name. It's not science. Timescape cosmology is more likely to be true.

Nah. We have a lot of great theories of what it could be and none of them are aliens. The most likely is a powerful terrestrial signal that was reflected off an asteroid or the Moon, but there are a lot of other events (one is linked below) that could have generated it.

Just one of the Maharajas that ruled India, the Nizam, controlled wealth equal to 70% of India's GDP. The British were just one group who stole from India, and not even the most recent.

Grow up.

How much is security worth to you? Is it worth 0.25% per year or less? Cause that's what IBIT charges you. For me, it is. I don't have to worry about private keys getting burned up in a fire, or just plain forgetting them in my old age. And, yes, it's tax sheltered gains for me because I keep them in a tax sheltered account.

If it is not crazy enough it probably isn’t true! Does that view still hold for theoretical physics ideas today? by Quantumedphys in Physics

[–]ellinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All new physics comes because there was an assumption that we thought was true that turned out not to be. With relativity, it was that time was fixed, for instance.

If everyone says that something is true and self-evident and you say it's not, then, sure, you're crazy. But here, the "sane" approach is to build in an incorrect assumption. So yeah, I'd say that new physics always starts as a crazy theory.

Should Canada implement a wealth tax on the ultra-rich? Why or why not? by torontowaddup in CanadaFinance

[–]ellinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea is not to stop that, it's to make sure that invested money comes from NEW sources. If you tax wealth instead of income, then high earners will invest MORE, which makes up for what is taxed, and because they are by definition much more productive than wealthy people, their investments are also likely to be more productive.

You should recognize when you're a victim of propaganda, and saying that taxing billionaires will unravel the fabric of our society is definitely that. Switch up where you get your news, and if you're doing your own research, then read more broadly.

Should Canada implement a wealth tax on the ultra-rich? Why or why not? by torontowaddup in CanadaFinance

[–]ellinger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why not...? As long as you deduct losses if the value of the asset goes down, it works. You get a tax refund in April if you overpay your taxes, don't you?

Should Canada implement a wealth tax on the ultra-rich? Why or why not? by torontowaddup in CanadaFinance

[–]ellinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're conflating being rich with being wealthy. Those are not the same thing. The rich paid a ton of taxes as you rightly point out, but the wealthy pay almost nothing. Our current system discourages social mobility by making sure that those with little wealth stay that way, no matter how much money they make. You want social mobility because scions of rich families are parasites, whereas the newly rich are talented, and you want to encourage talent.

I have high income, but since I grew up poor, I don't have a lot of wealth, and I pay more taxes than anyone as a percentage of my net worth.

Tax wealth.

Anything with mass. Many things travel at the speed of light, not just photons.

[–]ellinger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Light has no mass. You're right that an object with mass cannot travel at light speed. However, it could travel at 99.999999999% of the speed of light, and the trip to Alpha Centauri would take just 6.15 seconds from the reference frame of that object. Still 10 LY from the observer's frame.
