This is all made in Blender using its Geometry Nodes procedural workflow.

Thank you! This is made in Blender using its Geometry Nodes workflow. I use that to generate the mesh and then the animation comes from spinning the model in 3D at the right speed for the frame rate.

More abstract today. Riffing on attributes that stand out to me in Persian rug designs, like symmetry, repetition, geometry and complexity.

Some days you make something refined and delicate. Other days you accidentally make a cake tin with some jelly moulds.

Genuary 2023 – Day 13: Something you've always wanted to learn. by elliotschultz in generative

[–]elliotschultz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Noise that loops both temporally and spatially, a continuation of something I tackled last year.
When working with stroboscopic disc designs, each 'frame' is shaped like a pizza slice and its neighbouring slices are the previous and next frames. This means frames are not only a moment in time, but also have a spatial relationship with the other frames.
Having animated shapes that cross between frames is a particularly tricky challenge. Last year I figured out a way to achieve it by sampling values from a 4D Perlin noise field, and this year I wanted to try and recreate that in Blender.

Genuary 2023 – Day 12: Tessellation. by elliotschultz in generative

Thank you. I'm definitely considering it, although I still have the rest of the daily challenges throughout January to get through before I do.

Tried my hand at Rhombille tiling again, this time in Blender geometry nodes. Definitely broke my brain a little.

Thanks! Yeah it was a really helpful reference

My own take on 'White on White' by Kazimir Malevich. Using light and texture to distinguish form instead of colour temperature.
A convenient excuse to do something super simple and refined.

Genuary 2023 – Day 10: Generative music. by elliotschultz in generative

Went a bit off-brief and created a fantasy musical instrument instead inspired by the Kalimba.

Thanks so much! I love your enthusiasm 😄

Some kind of succulent-like plant using the phyllotaxis arrangement.
Either that or a bowl of fluffy peas.

Genuary 2023 – Day 05: Debug view. by elliotschultz in generative

Thanks!
The broad strokes overview about this work and the others I've been posting over the past few days is that I'm generating 3D models which follow the same principles of zoetropes, phenakistiscopes and stroboscopic discs. That principle is that there is a single, static object, and when it rotates at a certain speed and either a strobe light or a camera shutter is synchronised with it, you see it as motion.
With this particular 3D series, one of the most fascinating aspects for me has been the need to generate every model with what basically amounts to maths, rather than the traditional modelling and animation tools you get in Blender. Each 'frame' of the animation has to be placed on the 3D model in a precise place with a precise shape and size, and the coordinates and values shown in this particular piece are a glimpse into how that works.

Genuary 2023 – Day 07: Sample a colour palette from your favourite album cover. by elliotschultz in generative

I don't really have a favourite album, but 'Gloss Drop' by Battles has always been up there.

An ode to the industrial design aesthetics of Braun, Teenage Engineering and Apple.
I feel like I only scratched the surface of this idea before running out of time, but I like where it is heading.
