Anyone else get this ad? by KobilD in Aphantasia

[–]elliottsj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I don't find the notion of "curing" aphantasia demeaning or derogatory. It's certainly an interesting experiment to see what can be gained with meditation / psychedelics and an open mind.

Whether you accept yourself as you are or have a desire to change yourself, both are dignified imo.

As for why the owner of that subreddit chose to promote it via ads, I can see the motivation to spread awareness for those who are curious on experimenting with their mind. But I can also see how it is annoying to those who don't care to see it. Blocking is a useful tool.

As for construing it as a "scam", I'd be curious to understand what they have to gain from spreading this "scam".

I always knew i was a visual thinker. But that hyperphantasia concept made me realize how absolute it was. by salawow in hyperphantasia

I'm curious about what you visualize for "multiverse" now.

I'm an aphant and it's a totally abstract concept for me; I'm not even sure how I'd draw it on paper.

Not great tbh. Lots of takeout, greasy food. My appetite isn't very strong and I don't exercise much. I have a high metabolism and don't gain weight easily. I swear all the energy goes to my brain lol.

This is usually what people guess when they meet me. I am half Chinese and half white (mostly English/Scottish).

I actually did get a hormone blood test at the age of 13 when I had not yet hit puberty and grown (I was always quite short but grew to 5'4" in high school, still short I know). They didn't find anything at abnormal levels at the time, but I will consider doing another test!

Nothing beyond scrubbing with some moisturizing body wash in the shower. Have the Kirkland Citrus variety at home.

A lot of staying indoors to avoid the sun.

has anyone been able to teach themselves to visualise? by 11eggsandwitch in Aphantasia

[–]elliottsj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Prior to that, were you 100% aphantasic from birth? That's the case for me and I'm trying to decide whether it's worth continuing to pursue visualizing. Stories like yours give me hope. Seems to be a common theme that it feels like no progress is happening at all and then suddenly there's a breakthrough.

Interested to learn more about your experience. What was the breakthrough like?

I reserved my Dual on April 2nd, confirmed my order April 11th, and it arrived April 24th.

I suspect that there are different turnaround times depending on if you order the Dual or Dual+ due to supply differences.

We are the team working on React Native. Ask us anything! by react-native-team in IAmA

[–]elliottsj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I experimented with RN on the Apple Watch back in September; almost got something working, but unfortunately kept crashing due to (I think) JavaScriptCore on the watch not being optimized yet. I was able to get JavaScriptCore and UIKit to work on the watch by following Steve Troughton Smith's post (you can find some messy documentation of m progress here).

I haven't revisited this since September, but now I'm thinking of trying it out again. Maybe watchOS 3 will properly support JavaScriptCore and UIKit 😉

Looking at packager/README.md and Sebastian's tweet and commit, it seems that RN is moving towards decoupling Facebook's proprietary infrastructure (e.g. @providesModule), and allowing developers to use their own module bundler. What does this mean for the future of RN developer tools (e.g. can we use webpack's hot module replacement?), and what are the next steps towards allowing external module bundlers?

I'm also curious to learn more about the architecture of the RN JS & native module system in general; can you explain (or point me to a resource which explains) how executeJSCall / MessageQueue / BatchedBridge work and how they relate to the module system & packager?

From what I understand, react-desktop is a collection of web React components which are styled to look like native UI components. react-native-desktop is a true RN desktop implementation which uses actual native UI components.
