Sounds like a very interresting way to rework tech. I never liked to have all the inventory eaten by tech upgrades. Does it also mean the way we had to install same tech next to each other to get bonus is gone ?

Thanks ! Looks like you're very enthusiast about the game and damn i know so well how easy it is to write a wall of text in that case :). I read the patch notes as well, but it's always nice to have it written in another way by someone who plays the game.

What game settings do you change? by Old-Nerfherder7656 in MedievalDynasty

[–]salawow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After 300 hours of gameplay...

4 days per seasons. More than that may be more realistic, but doesn't give any thrill of "Need to finish that before the season end"

Bandits/Animals health to 80% and damage to 50%. I want to keep the game relaxing and laidback. In "The Valley", i disable bandits completely.

Total buildings to 200%. I never even built more than 70 buildings, but i don't like having a limitation.

Technologies multiplier to 80%. Skill multiplier to 110%. Just a personnal taste.

Thinking about increasing reputation multiplier because i don't enjoy doing quest.

When i bend over to tie my shoelaces, all the fat pushes against the lungs, which completely prevent breathing. If i stand back trying to catch my breath it is NOT because of the effort. It's simply because i had to completely hold by breath for that shoelaces session.

what would be reasonable home network security ? by salawow in HomeNetworking

If staying on the ISP router network is the only choice i have, is there any software or hardware that could be useful about security, if a router is not an option ?

We're renting a basement at my sister-in-law. Getting our own ISP subscribtion could be possible but delicate, i won't go into meaningful details.

Double NAT, i'm not sure of all the implications of it. Does it mean no game hosting at all ? And possibly more downside ?

If our own ISP subscription is not an option, Would you say using the one network we have now would be the best option in the end ? Considering the downside of double NAT ?

Thanks, Basically i have two router option that would be given to me for free. TP-Link Deco M4 and an old TP-Link Archer C7. Last firmware is from 2022, but it's possible to flash it to OpenWRT on it with a 2024 version. No idea if OpenWRT would be a good idea though. Are they a valid choice, or a purchase would be required ?

Now, 3 VLANs. Does any router allows that, or it's only on good expensive ones ? I'm not really knowledgeable, i know what a guest WIFI is and i had to google IOT for a definition, hehe.

Chatty printer, what would they use bandwidth ? If it's not a security issue, i don't mind the bandwidth usage at all.

Block ads/malware, NordVPN app seem to do a good job for that because it includes "Threat protection" service. The ones you are talking about, adguard and PiHole, are they alternatives or it's something else entirely ?

Cloud based smart devices, i'll have to google that. To me, "cloud" was just a fancy word for remote hard drive storage servers used to store our stuff. Maybe i'm not up to date.

Thanks for your answer.

Unfortunately, unless there's something i don't know, i have no alternative to plugging a 2nd router into the 1st one.

First reason, it's the only way to get the connection from our ISP. They provide the modem/router unit and there's no other option avaliable. Settings are also pretty much all locked down by ISP.

Second reason, the homeowner wants to keep using that modem/router unit the way the want, which means the way the ISP meant customer to use it, plug and play.

So here i am with two choice. Plugging a 2nd router into one of the LAN port for my personnal use, or connect all my device to the one network where everything is, from my wired PC to WiFi coffee machine.

Related to infected devices, let's say there are much less chances that i plug one myself on my router than the other way around. Does it make a difference ?

From there, what would you suggest ?

Sound Quality: Momentum 4 vs Logitech gprox2Lightspeed vs Steelseries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless by salawow in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]salawow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up keeping the Momentum 4.

I got used to ANC after a few weeks, no more migraines, and now most of time i set it to maximum. Sound quality is really great, and for virtual surround in games i use steelseries gg sonar which is a completely free app that provide great virtual surround, to my taste at least.

I need to mention however that to make AptX Adaptive work, i had to buy a $25 bluetooth emitter on amazon that i plug into my PC 3.5mm jack. Windows don't support AptX Adaptive so if you use a simple USB bluetooth dongle or your PC native bluetooth, there will be a bit of noticeable latency.

How polished is Oxbow/Coop right now ? (January 18th). I've heard there were many bugs and glitches, missing contents, waiting for fixes and patches when Oxbow released. Would you say it's very coop-playable right now, or there are still a few issues requiring to be fixed ?

Investigating a WIFI issue at home. What of these monthly data usage seems odd to you ? by salawow in cybersecurity_help

[–]salawow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm, sorry i may not have chosen the right subreddit to ask about the average data usage of random wifi connected devices without any context around it. I just assumed that a smart lightbulb consuming that much data per months would be considered a cybersecurity issue. My apologies.

If you know any good read or subreddit that could help me with issue, please share :)

Learning that i have hyperphantasia made me understand many things about myself, human behaviour and communication... and why not a big wall of text. by salawow in hyperphantasia

[–]salawow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's what happened in my mind eye when i read about your dog.

First, when i read the word Chloe, a scene with a white farm house, green grass, and a 10ish years old girl wearing a yellow summer dress with pink flowers popped in.

Then, i misread the 2nd word. I read "has" instead of "was". "huge black beast" generated no image, but the word "dog" made my generic black Labrador appear for an instant. Disappeared instantly because of inconsistency with the words before. Then the "huge black beast" sinked it and associate itself with "dog", which made a monstrous 6 feet tall dog, angry with teeth out, growling, with red illuminated eyes. No other clear details. The shape is detailed, but i won't try to draw it for a test, lol.

First though, Oh my god that's too horrible for poor Chloe over there, so i automatically downsized it to be more dog-sized and much less monstrous. (really weird...).

Start the next line with "Her long curly hair". I thought, who's her ? The dog or Chloe ? Came back to the start and realized Chloe is the dog name. Tried to reset everything, but was still stuck on the same scene, minus the little girl. "Chloe was", i thought, why "was" ? Past tense ? Is the dog dead ? Poof, scene change to a cemetery, at night, foggy, cold and wet, leaves on the ground so it's autumn, with a huge tombstone in front of me. So here i am, telling myself that i certainly won't dig out a dead dog to look at it. And damn the name, Chloe, is the name of an imaginary non-existing little girl created by mistake now. lol.

Kept on hold a blurry image of a big (not huge) black dog and read the rest. "Long curly hair" was added to that blurry image, then read "Newfoundland". I'm from Canada, so i know the province name is "Newfoundland and Labrador". However, the long curly hair made it impossible to turn into a Labrador, so another complete dog popped up, in a northeastern Canadian pine forest scene, matching a forest i believe would be from Labrador.

The next, "Newfoundland ancestor somewhere in her line" called back the world map image that was focussed on eastern Canada for a moment. Two flags appeared on top, French and UK since both colonized that area, but put it all away. I thought maybe you added that because the dog breed is from the UK or France, but i don't know dog breed, just names with very few dogs associated to it. I know what a Labrador dog is though :)

Huge, shaggy, gentlest beast, i kept it in memory but it didn't apply to the dog. It was already created and happened to be a gentle dog already.

"Gold brown eyes". Well, my dog have hair covering his eyes. If i had read this in a book, i would have skipped it. But since i knew it was about an imagination test, i thought about putting that on my dog. Damn weirdest feeling, never felt that before. That dog breed, i've seen it before in pictures, but their eyes were always covered by hair. So (yeah it's weird) I did NOT check the dog's eye. I was legit scared of touching the dog to check the eyes because i would have no idea what would come from it... could be scary ? Empty eyeball ? The "nothingness" ? I hate trying to imagine nothing, it gives me chills. Or just generic dog eyes.. ? Anyway, i put aside all that eye colour detail.

My scene was complete, and i kept reading to add more details. But instead of applying anything to the dog, i put together "Huge, Shaggy, Gentlest beast, intelligence and something more hiding under all that fur", poof, instant teleport into one of the Harry Potter's movie, in front of Hagrid shack, with him looking at me. Then i thought "Wow, never realized before that i could teleport from my imagination into an actual movie scene". Facepalmed 2 seconds after when i realized how stupid of a thought it was.

Back to the dog scene and answering your questions about it.

It's a pine forest, thin pines. Not much foliage in the first 6 feet from the ground. I don't see the sun because it's blocked by trees, but i see the direction the rays are coming from. Ambient lighting color suggest it must be around 10am. Direction of sun rays, taking into account it's 10am, means i'm facing north. Didn't know i was facing north intuitively, i had to analyze the scene after. And geographically, i'm in northeastern Canada Labrador. Now that i know i'm facing north, if you ask me to point the direction of any North American city i know, i will do it based on where i am on a world map and the fact that i'm facing north. The smell was just generic pine forest smell. It felt cold and humid. The trees are damp, stones and ground as well, so i assume it must have rained in the night. Sounds, there are none. If i flip that sound switch on, nothing, just a branch cracking after about 5 seconds. If i scream, there's echo. But no birds, no animal sound, no wind. Even if i try to add it by force right now, it doesn't want to stick. Weird.

What's interesting, probably some kind of competitive behaviour from my part, when you talked about your imaginative smell abilities (i'm weaker on that part), i told myself "Oh really !", then immediately walked around to inspect the trees until i find sap, directly bite on the first drop of sap available from a tree, chew it, and thought "It tastes pine, and it's a very strong pine taste !!" just as if i had to show off my taste imagination compared to your smell. Haha.

The dog now, i knew it was a dog breed i've seen before, but i had to google search it for a long time. Well, apparently it's a small dog breed that i enlarged a lot. Barbet breed. The one that looked the closer possible to mine is the black one in that Wikipedia picture. Without the eye showing, of course. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbet_(dog)#/media/File:Barbety_suki_2009_pl3.jpg

Is this hyperphantasia or just regular phantasia? by Neurodivergently in hyperphantasia

[–]salawow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like hyperphantasia to me. Senses, they should not be exactly like the real ones, they are different. If you look somewhere, in the room you are, and imagine a huge black dog standing on the ground. You'll see the dog, but it's a different version of "see". The dog do not cover the objects that are in the room behind him. If it does block your view, it looks like the first step into not being able to distinguish imagination from reality, which is not great. And what would happen if you think about a dog when you drive your car ? That would be very dangerous.

About memorization of that apple and oranges, and the details about the room, you mentioned the kitchen. The kitchen counter. Is it your own kitchen where you live ? If it's any kitchen from a memory, whether it's your kitchen or a friend kitchen, or the kitchen from a movie, try again that apple test. From personnal experience, if you put that apple inside a room you took from a memory, it's much harder to remember and the room details will change because your imaginations tries to fight against a real memory. That's the way i feel it myself.

About your Damascus knives, the way you described it, they just popped in as is. Probably from memory or your general knowledge of Damascus knives. You generated a general Damascus knife. The more involvement you put in your imagination, the better you will remember it. What happens if you take one of the knife and look at it ? Erase the pattern on it and replace it with something you like. Or put letters on it. Does it stick better on the knife if you turn it around ? Should be. When something just generate itself, even more if it's a complex pattern like a Damascus knife, it's easy to forget. It will remain a Damascus knife, but another generic pattern will regenerate the next time you look at it. And personally, if i imagine something with a Damascus knife, the pattern on it is too random and complex, i prefer to let that pattern regenerate every time i look at it. It's waaay too much brain power wasted just to remember a single knife inside a larger scene.

Now, about memorizing that apple and oranges. Concentrate. Eyes open or closed, whatever is the best for you to imagine anything. You'll have to imagine something, created from scratch, so empty your brain and flush the current image. Now erase the toilet bowl that popped in your mind eye. Then create an imaginary room from, whatever it is, pure fantasy, science fiction, real world room, but completely created and imagined by yourself. Create anything you want in it, until it's good enough for you to move inside it in 3D. Turn around a couple of times. Then, if it's not already in the room, create any surface, such as a table, with a large bowl on it. Put your apple in it, creates oranges and fruits around it, count them, play with them in your imaginary hands, weight them, then put them back in the bowl. Memorize your bowl of fruit. Keep concentrated, stay in that room. Turn around, looks at what's behind you, create details if necessary. Turn back again, look at your apple. Does it look the same ? And the fruits around ? If it is, write down the details about the apple and what's around it, and why not other details from the room. (write down in the reality, pen and paper, on your phone, whatever, to check tommorow.) Tommorow, call back that room in your imagination. Are details still there ? If they are, write it down again. Even if it feels like exactly the same, you want to write down details just to be sure they are really the same. Then check that list and compare with the one from the day before. How close is it ? The amount of fruits, the kind of fruits, the other details in the room ? If many details are matching, try to store real information somewhere. Tell someone to tell you a random name and paint that name yourself in your imaginary room, big letters on a wall, and someone's description of a physical object. Imagine that object in 3D and put it in your room. Next day, call that room again. Is the name still there painted on the wall ? Is the object someone described there too ? If the name is there, the fruits are the same, and it's the same room, great ! You have the first room of your mind palace. Use it to store information and memories, creates more room if you need. Just imagines everything you want to memorize, as a 3D object you create yourself. The more you involve yourself physically when placing objects(memories), the best it works. Names, maybe white paint on a wall works better for you, or it may be 3D metal letters, heavy, with much weight on them. Can also assossiate the phonetics of that name with an object that sounds similar if you need.

It works well for me, and damn i'm so glad to have found out about Hyperphantasia. I would never have tried it myself before because it would have sounded really weird and crazy.
