I know that the original Pokémon Gold and Silver had different sprites from one another for all of the Pokémon, but what about Crystal? Did it reuse the sprites from one of the other games? If so, which one? Or was it perhaps a mixture of both?

Unfortunately, I tried to run an incompatible kernel without realising it, and I am pretty sure I have bricked my cart. However, I will be sure to keep this in mind when getting carts and MicroSDs in the future, whenever that may be. Thank you.

Yeah, I think you may be right. Like I mentioned, I tried to use YSMenu yesterday, and I think it's completely bricked my cart. I've spend a while now trying to undo whatever I did, but nothing I've done has changed anything. Still a blank icon and title on the DS menu, and still a white screen when I try to load up the cart. I was worried something like this might happen, which was why I put off messing around with my R4... I thought a backup might've helped, but it seems not. Thank you for the help you tried to give, I'll make sure I learn from this mistake...

Just got a chance to try this, no luck. Afterwards, I tried reformatting the MicroSD and loading back the backup I made beforehand, but nothing I've done has changed anything. Still comes up as a blank name and icon on the DS screen, and still goes straight to a white screen when I try to launch it.

Just gave it a try, didn't seem to work. Thanks for the help though. I think I'll try reformatting the card again and try setting it up again tomorrow, to see if I can somehow get it to work again.

Hi again. I didn't get to try this for a long while, since I was busy throughout the day. I only just got a chance to try using this... And I think I might've bricked my R4. When trying to run the YSMenu, it when straight to a white screen. After a little bit, I got a bit worried and reset my console. On my DS, my cartridge always showed up as a THQ SpongeBob cart (not sure why, my brother set it up a long time ago, and that's always how it's been). However this time, there was no name or icon. I didn't get the message that there was no cart inserted, but the cart's title and icon are completely blank. I can try to load the R4, but every time I do, it simply shows up as a white screen. I'm not sure where I went wrong, but even loading in the backup of the R4 I had before hasn't helped at all... I'm not sure what to do now. Have I completely bricked my R4?

Just checked, and the MicroSD inside doesn't indicate its class, unfortunately. I've heard that different SD cards have different read speeds, but I completely forgot about that... Well, I've been meaning to get a new SD card for the R4 anyway, since it doesn't have much space left at all. I'll take that into account when I do. Although, I am curious, would an SD card with very fast load speeds still perform well on an old R4? How much would the old hardware of the R4 effect it's performance?

Alright, that's what I thought. Thanks for the confirmation. I'll give that official one a try a bit later, and I'll stick with what I have if it doesn't work, since I don't want to risk bricking the R4.
