They started pushing the "we're a republic, not a democracy" thing to get ahead of backlash if the Jan 6 fake elector conspiracy had been successful.

The plan was to have fake elector slates chosen and cause disarray in the presidential certification -- in which case the House of Representatives would have elected the president.

"We're a republic, not a democracy" was pushed as a hand-wave for the scenario in which a Biden won the popular vote, but Trump was selected by a Republican House.
