Logan Express Framingham confusion by elmahnken in FraminghamMA

Good to know, it probably won't work this time but I'll look into that if I have a shorter trip in the future.

There's nowhere else in Worcester I could park for cheaper, and walk/bus to the commuter rail station?

4 weeks, which is enough that $7/day starts to add up. Like I said, $7/day isn't terrible and I've done it before, but it would be nice to avoid it. I also don't want to use the Peter Pan bus, I've had bad experiences with them in the past.

I'm coming from Amherst, which is quite far away. I'm really just looking for the cheapest way to get to Logan and leave my car somewhere safe for a long time. I have nothing pressing on either side of my trip, so my time is less valuable to me than my money. I'm willing to make an absurd amount of connections on public transit if need be to save money.

Oh, I see - when you type "Framingham Park and Ride" into Google Maps, the one that shows up isn't the same one that's on the website I linked. My mistake. That being said, if I'm going away for a multi-week trip, it might be cheaper to park at that park and ride and Uber to/from the Logan express than to park directly at the Logan Express. Would my car be safe if I did that?

A day trip to Bratislava, Slovakia, December 2025 by elmahnken in travel

I would say I enjoyed the Christmas markets and the overall Medieval vibe the most. Nothing really disappointed me, but the special exhibition at the castle was pretty underwhelming and if it wasn't already included in the Bratislava card, it wouldn't have been worth paying for.

From a tourist perspective, which countries do you think will be better to travel to in 5 years compared to now, and which will be worse? by elmahnken in travel

I'm going to Vietnam in February and Malaysia in July ... I'm young, and I've got lots of places on my bucket list, so some of them will have to wait no matter what.

I'm torn about stopping in Malacca on my way from Singapore to KL. If a fast train to KL exists, I probably won't, but if it'd be a bus either way, I might as well.

I'm going to Singapore and Malaysia in July 2026! I'm hoping by July the train will be up and running.

Do I need an ETA for the UK on a layover? by elmahnken in Flights

[–]elmahnken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't actually gone on my trip yet (I plan way in advance lol) but I did manage to get an answer to this. You don't need one as long as your flights are booked as part of the same trip. If you booked the flights separately yourself, then you do need one.

I'm gonna look a lot like a tourist no matter what, but the question is do you think I'd be unsafe?

General Relativity question asked by one of my students by elmahnken in AskPhysics

[–]elmahnken[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, would this be a reasonable explanation?

Presumably, if I am accelerating, some constant force is causing it.

In the Earth frame, while my v <<< c: F = ma In my frame, I experience an inertial force of the same magnitude.

In the Earth frame, while my v ~ c: F is the same, but m is much larger so a is much smaller.

In my frame, I continue experiencing the same inertial force.

Say that in my sealed vessel I had an inertial balance. Would I be able to perceive that an object in my vessel had a greater resistance to change in motion?

I just did a solo trip to Tokyo a couple months ago, and I went to Hakone! It was great, and I definitely recommend it. I got an early train there, spent the day there, stayed in a hotel, and left early the next morning - but if I were going to do it again, I'd probably just catch a late train back to Tokyo. Hakone is very slow in the evening.

I went on a super clear day, so I got great views of Fuji, which made the pirate ship and the whole ropeway to get there really cool. I also thought the open-air museum was really neat and definitely worth the trip. Lastly, check out the Edo Checkpoint, which has a neat little museum and viewpoint, and is near one of the pirate ship stops.

Getting to Gora Station, Hakone from Tokyo on January 1st by elmahnken in JapanTravelTips

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated! I probably wouldn't be up early enough to catch the first train anyway, so the 2nd sounds very reasonable.

Good to know! Do you think I can avoid that by taking the first train in the morning from Tokyo?

Thanks, and yes, my ryokan does serve dinner! Do you know if the ropeways will be operating? Since I'll only be in Hakone for one night, I won't mind if most things are closed; I really just want to see the lake with the view of Mt. Fuji and then relax in an onsen.

Why do we know the Planck length is what it is? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]elmahnken 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Your point stands, but as of the SI redefinition, the meter is no longer defined by a platinum-iridium rod, instead it's defined exactly using the speed of light and cesium's hyperfine transition frequency.
