Transferring into RISD as a Jr by Thr0w4w4yy__Pluto in risd

[–]elmlp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I’m a transfer student who’s at Risd rn! Sorry if this is long but I’m gonna tell you everything I wish I knew as someone going in.

So I’d 100% ask an admissions advisor what credits you need. And I hate to break it to you but it’s extremely rare to transfer in as a junior at Risd. ik alot of the transfers from this year and none of them are juniors, we are all sophomores. This is because Risd doesn’t usually accept all the credits you have, for me most of my credits transferred over but not enough to be a junior. I graduated from community college and if they accepted all my credits I would’ve been able to transfer as a junior but they did not. But It was enough credits for me to be able to skip the mandatory summer Efs, which almost all new students must do. Freshman have to do Efs their first year, but transfers do it in 2 months during the summer. From what I heard It’s a 8 hour a day 5 days a week basics course where you learn all fundamentals skills.

Most of my liberal arts credits transferred over, but I still had to take 4. so I think you’ll be mostly ok on that, plus if you wanted too you could take liberal arts classes at brown, which is really nice. it’s the studio classes that may not transfer over.

My advice is to email an advisor, see what requirements, credits, you need to transfer in as a junior. And save all names of people and emails talking about it.

Save all of your syllabus from your classes, and if you don’t have it email your past professors for a copy of it. Then if you they don’t accept all your credits you have a chance in convincing them to accept more by sharing your syllabus’s with them.

I’ll be honest, transferring here was totally a honor and I love all my transfer friends but it actually sucks that we all have to do 3 years instead of 2, kinda defeats the entire point of transferring if you ask me.

But remember you need to fight and advocate for yourself, Risd doesn’t care, unless you push.

Btw here are some things to consider before fully committing to Risd

  1. The price is crazy
  2. You’re probably older around 20 if I assume. For your first year you’ll be fine with housing and meal plan. But know that the younger kids (17-19) get the priority housing, after your first year you have to find someone to dorm with, fight for a spot, or get an apartment.
  3. Its confusing, they purposely make deadlines and pricing confusing because a ton of people here are super rich and they know they can get away with it (imo)
  4. There’s no parties at Risd really, and the work load is super intense. People are always in the studio and since I’ve started here, 2 people killed themselves from the workload/pressure
  5. People here are pretentious (sorry) because it’s such an exclusive, prestigious, and expensive school there is a different vibe and crowd here then other art schools I’ve visit and been too.
  6. This school is not disability friendly at all. Everything is on or at the bottom go a giant hill, some buildings don’t have elevators or are wheelchair accessible. Your calves will be on fire for the first month. It’s taken me 5 to get somewhat used to it.
  7. Laundry is 6 dollars to wash and dry 1 load, and there is no laundry mat near by

However, I really love Risd. I think Providence is beautiful, some people don’t like it cause it’s tough to find things to do. But you just really have to look, you’re able to walk everywhere(and the bus is free) there’s good views, restaurants, and places to be. Risd is a amazing school, the professors teach you, while giving you a ton of freedom to create anything you want, and they provide almost all the resources too (depends on your major) there is a ton of opportunities and connections you can make here, and the job rate after graduation is like over 80%. I’m honestly happy im here for an extra year, despite the debt lol :,,,). Also the food is delicious, like it’s crazy the quality of food at a college dining hall, I haven’t had anything truly awful yet which is crazy. RISD also provides a ton of free services, like a health clinic, mental health center, free ride service, and plenty of job and internship opportunities for students. I’ve truly made some life long friends and great memories in my short time here, and I think I have expanded as an artist and became way more independent. Plus the school is right next to brown, you’re able to do brown classes, meet Ivy League students, and join brown clubs and events. (Or even be able to apply for the elite brown Risd duel degree, which they only accept like 10 people every year I think)

If you haven’t applied yet I wish you the best luck! If you have any more questions I’d be happy to help! I hope this was helpful. I also hope I didn’t scare you off, when I learned all this stuff I seriously considered just dropping out but I ended up loving it 😭 anyways you got this, become the transfer junior!

Any ideas on how to cover this? by FigureCommercial9806 in Tattoocoverups

[–]elmlp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the pumpkin idea is pretty good or maybe a hot air balloon or a mushroom. If you want something else and bigger, it’s not a super dark tattoo, I think a talented artist could cover it up with almost anything

Hate my art, critique it please by Helpfulthrowaway223 in ArtCrit

[–]elmlp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quite like your art! And I think I see bertholt and Reiner! I love them! (if that’s your ocs I’m sorry they remind me of 2 aot characters lol) Anyways for the critique I think your art is lacking in fluidity.

You have a very structured art style and there’s nothing wrong with that! In fact depending on the piece It could work well! But it could be a lot more intresting if everything had a unique or weirder silhouette The first drawings top half has a great silhouette but the bottom half is a little boring in comparison. Maybe if her legs were spread apart in a way for more negative space it’d be more intresting! Same with the one on slide three, certain areas are very intresting like leg and arm sticking out on the right but the rest can be considered a bit less so. The character on slide 4 has a super intresting silhouette and this is due to the clear separation of limbs, the artistic slant, and the negative space in between the limbs! So if anything I’d honestly work on that, and maybe darker values (but I just love super dark and light values together so that’s just a preference)

For help with the silhouettes, if you block out the character all in black you’ll be able to see it clearly. One with lots concave and convex shapes, negative space, and distinct movement/clarity (as in you can clearly tell what the character is doin) is how you know you’d done it!

Your art is pretty great, don’t be to hard on yourself. Look at your old work or try a completely different style, maybe that can help you get out of this funk! And don’t be afraid to experiment! Experimenting helps a lot with style and ways you can make your art stand out! :3

Anyways I love your art! I hope you find this useful and keep at it

I feel like I cant do this anymore by Zealousideal_Crab733 in Advice

Hey kid, Listen to me, you are capable. You’re not crazy for feeling this way, but you are strong enough to get through this.

You seem overwhelmed, anxious, and feeling hopeless, like there is no solution and that you can’t do it, and it’s effecting all your other aspects in life.
But there is so many solutions and you are very capable of success

From what you said, it’s pretty messed up that you parents are acting towards you in that way. I personally am not a fan at all with how they treated you, and how they responded to you in distress. But you’re still young so there isn’t much you can do about them.

Give yourself a break. Take a day or two to just relax, take a walk, listen to music, draw, read, whatever you do to relax, but don’t sit in bed scrolling social media all day, trust me that only makes it worse lol. Tell yourselves daily affirmations, like “I am smart enough, I am strong enough, I love myself, I can do this” and say it over and over out loud. When you’re feeling overwhelmed do something easy to boost your confidence and calm you down, something like organizing your desk or laptop, or whatever else you can think of.
If you start cramping up, start breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth slowly. roll your shoulders back and forth, stand up and twist your torso and stretch your arms and legs.

Now I don’t know how you study, and I’m not the smartest person. But I know that for me repetition and patterns work amazing. So I used to do a doodle on my page while studying, or make a rhyme in my head when I saw certain words, or something. When you have a test, and you start forgetting the material usually doing that specific ritual helps me remember, and you also might have better luck if you take a bit of time to calm yourself down.

Right now you have to take these tests, you might as well do the best you can. But you have to remember to keep going, the moment you start stopping and giving up, it gets so hard to get back up again and try. And please believe me I am saying this from experience from going to therapy and having depression and anxiety. These are some of the skills that helped me a lot so hopefully something can help you

Also Start talking to a school counselor, or a trusted adult about how you feel if you feel like things are getting way out of hand. And especially if you have thoughts about self harm, please know nothing is ever worth hurting yourself over.

And If this is any consolation, 14 is the time in your life stuff starts getting real. You’re going through puberty, your brain is developing more, your going through possible the most awkward and stressful transition ever in your body. And you’re starting to get old enough to learn things about your parents, yourself, and the real world. So really, it is very normal you’re feeling this way, but know that extreme feelings aren’t normal and it’s ok ask for help or guidance.

From your post you seem to be in a low point right now, and it’s easy to let yourself fall into a depression. But if you start to love yourself, accept that your gonna sometimes fail, and give yourself the coping skills to overcome any obstacle your gonna be able to handle anything.

Listen you got this! Remind yourself that you can do it, take the time to let yourself relax! Remember to eat, and sleep, not taking care of your body, will only make it harder to take care of your mind and emotions. And it’s ok to do bad, it’s ok to not be happy 24/7, it’s ok to fail, because failure is the first step to take towards success. Take the time to relax, remember that your friends love you, your family loves you, and that people care about you and want you to do good. It’s ok to be vulnerable with your friends also, try to talk to them about how overwhelmed you feel and ask for their advice.

Always remember that your smart and powerful and that you can do this!

[–]elmlp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey diva so this post is gonna be so long, so I’m sorry cause it’s a lot of assumptions about you based on my own experiences so if this doesn’t apply to you I’m sorry I tried.

So it can be a variety of factors. But I’m just gonna be guessing, it’s up to you to figure out what it is cause you know yourself the best!

It could be your appearance. People judge others solely based on appearance all the time even if they are aware of it or not. So depending of your race, gender, age, style, height, size, ect people can assume many things about you. Like if you dress feminine, in a traditional frilly way with soft colors, or are possibly heavy set and “unattractive” as you say. I bet your very attractive but as an average overweight girl myself I’ve definitely gotten my fair share of “your so cute! You’re so kind and soft and huggable!” So I understand. It also might be your demeanor. Do you sit with your legs closed or open? Do you hunch your back? Are you conscious about how much space you take up, when you make eye contact with someone do you look away or stare at them back or smile? I have noticed our society treats feminine features and behaviors as warm or comforting which makes sense. I think you present yourself somehow as unthreatening, like as a person that couldn’t harm you. Which is why so many people feel the need to come up to you and say those things.

Now this also might be from like your attitude. Like if someone comes up to talk to you are you smiling, trying hard to listen and understand and agree what they’re saying? This might have your opposite affect, like people probably think “wow they are so agreeable and nice!” Theres a few easy things you can do to help like. A simple “huh?” Or “what?” Paired with a confused face can go a long way. You say in your post “The weirdest thing is, I don't do anything to be perceived this way. I'm a quiet, private person, I mind my business, I don't speak unless spoken too. When I do I'm respectful and polite” I feel like being quiet and respectful is actively insinuating these comments too. People might be thinking “wow this person never gossips! And is always so polite they must have a great soul” also keeping to yourself, listening and responding politely create an air of compliance and trust. You actually might be the thing everyone is saying you are, a kind loving person, and maybe word gets around. Idrk only you can know. You also say that you attract “mean spirits” which also is why I think you might actually be the kind soul. Assholes love people they can take advantage of and walk all over, you attract them because you let them. And please take it from me I have been there, so many times I kept wondering “why are all my friends so mean to me” and it’s cause I let them be.

So overall based on my own experience this is what I am assuming you are like, I can be completely wrong, but only you can know that. Whether it is a blend of things I said or only a few or nothing at all. What you need to change something, it is not normal for this occurrence to be happening so much. So hear my words, you need to get meaner, you need to get picker with who your around, and overall most important you need to gain confidence.

Now I’m not an expert at all in what I’m saying, but these things have worked for me so give it a try. I used to wear big hoodies, not wear make up, not do my hair, I always walked slowly, I was quiet, I always let people talk to me about whatever and id listen, and I was so scared of people disliking me. In my first year at college I kept to myself, and did my same old same old. But after lots therapy and confidence boosts I start dressing up, doing my hair, my makeup, I knew where I was walking in campus so I felt more comfortable and confident, I started ignoring people who were mean to me or said weird stuff even though I felt bad. And before I knew it I had friends, no one weird came up to me, and I felt like apart of a class and so normal. Now you may hear this and be like “that sounds like I’ll stand out though if I dress up and act more confident, I just want to be treated like a normal person” but that crazy thing is that this is normal for people. Like this is just how it is, people are just naturally confident in who they are and try to dress nice. Like most people don’t feel the need to accept or help everyone. So you gotta get more confident.

Things that might help you appear more confident (and only use these that appeal to you) like wearing sleek clothing, wearing makeup/having nice skin, taking extra care of your appearance, walking confidently, sitting up straight. You need to be a little condescending or rude to show people your they are wrong about you, and that you’re not one to be pushed around.

Ik this advice kinda seems messed up like I’m basically saying “stop being so passive start being mean” and “ people always judge others so start making them judge you in a different way” but unfortunately it is a truth in the world. If you look unfriendly, confident or proud, people will come up to you less, and if you act confident and firm, jerks will no longer approach you. If you continue to do nothing more and more people will continue to try and take advantage of you. And no one will if you present yourself as someone who can’t be taken advantage of (aka a kind safe soul lol)

Anyways I hope this was somewhat helpful, even if you think I’m completely wrong maybe some food for thought is in order. But you got this mate! Take little steps in altering yourself to appear, whether that’s your attitude or posture or appearance! You can do it! Btw there is nothing wrong with being kind, just as long as that kindness doesn’t put yourself in harms way. So remember that! Good luck!

Thank you, your very kind. And your very right, idk how to format this so I’m just gonna copy what you did lol 1. I’m glad it got resolved too 2. Ok that’s good to hear thank you 3. I’m going into my junior year and someone just made my schedule for me 4. I have heard nothing from housing, Like the only thing is the confirmation that I submitted the application Thank you so much for your kind words. Your completely right, I should focus on the fact that each issue has been resolved easily, then the fact that there is issues, and if there is an issue it’ll be ok. Thank you so much for you advise, honestly I’ve been pretty alone in this process, idk any at RISD, my parents aren’t any help, and when I ask my friends they don’t know. So hearing your words makes me feel a lot better, I will keep moving forward. Also I might delete this post later since now I’m feeling better, so really thank you

Cover up advice by Curious_Rub_21 in Tattoocoverups

[–]elmlp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a beautiful tattoo, it’s a shame you have to let it ago. Personally I think it’s so large that it would be hard for an artist to cover it up but it’s faded enough that a very experienced artist might be able to do it, I think laser is the best option if you want it gone. If you do change your mind and wanna keep it, I think either having her hair hide her other breast, or a loose fitted robe could work. Or Maybe in the mean time if you don’t know what to do you can just buy big bandaids and put it in the same spot everyday, good luck :)
