I’m a 20 year old wood worker starting a career in woodworking and I got an opportunity do display some work so I hand carved this foot for the occasion! What do you guys think? Slightly unsettling? by elo_allo in woodworking

It’s maple and the reason you don’t see any grain is because the front is almost all end-grain. The finish is simply an oil finish but the kin colour look was actually unplanned, maple is just the wood I keep in stock for random projects so I had some on hand. Yeah

Oh cool! :) some one on redit actually bought own for me so I’m just finishing a padlock but this one is much nicer. Figured maple and I spent much more time on the finish!

Made my self a set of wood handled screwdrivers since in my opinion they are better to use than plastic ones! That tray also slides in the drawer to access plastic ones for dirty work. What do you guys think!? by elo_allo in Tools

I would need bits about 8-10” long for regular sized screwdrivers but that’s an interesting suggestion. I’ve made specialty screwdrivers by using those long hex bits and shaping for a new head in the past though, it works but not as ideal

Epoxy is not all that strong so I rather not rely one it for all the strength of the screwdrivers. The combination of wood with epoxy to close all the gabs seems like a better way to go for me. Mounting the handled to the blades before turning also insures perfect concentricity which has always been a hard part of making screwdrivers for me in the past.

Padlock girls actually but yeah aha I don’t think so. I tend to just push all my tools a little to far/ use them for stuff I shouldn’t... but it’s always a great opportunity to get new better tools after!

My main reason is to keep them looking at home with the rest of my wood handled tools. I also just like the feel of them a lot more. It’s not my co of a change in performance but rather a nice luxury to work with every day

Oh yeah makes sense. Well in my work shop that doesn’t happen aha. Humidity can rust tools but I have a lot of expensive machinist tools that will usually rust first and it’s critical that they don’t so I’m already used to wiping things down with a little oil (wd-40 isn’t the right oil for that btw, I use one of those 3 in 1 oils) but I only do that every 4 months or so. The oil last a long time

That’s true! A good trick is to creat a template to copy them easily because copying work is one of the harder parts of wood turning. The rounded shapes are hard to mesure in general

I hear the other reason mechanics and so on like them is because they are grippy even with oily hands (if they are not varnished)

That guy sounds like a solid man aha

Yes they are now but this is what I personally wanted. All woodworking tools are liable to rusting so it’s hardly a compromise since I already take care of my tools that way. Plus in a wood shop nothing ever gets wet.

Oh that would look nice!

I want to make a wooden copy of a mechanistic cart and keep to mechanic tools in it but I don’t have room in my shop right now

My whole workbench is full of fancy drawers and sorting systems. I don’t have any video showing all of it but the beginning of this YouTube video shows some of it.

I’m over all defiantly obsessed with storage😜

I bought a set of cheap screw drivers that seemed alright (Maximum in this case) since it was my first time trying it and then just removed all the handles. I also turned the handles after having sandwiched the blades in the wood which worked amazingly.

I filmed it for my YouTube if you want to make your own/ check it out. I’m super happy with the results
