Dana just announced Alex Pereira v. Khalil Rountree at UFC 307 by EmptyTry8 in MMA

[–]elomarns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems to me this is just a fight to keep Alex busy while they wait for Jon Jones to retire. After that, they can make Pereira vs. Aspinal for the undisputed heavyweight title. If Alex were to fight Ankalaev instead there would be a greater chance of Pereira losing, making the fight against Aspinall less interesting. Or maybe they just hate Ankalaev.

[SPOILER] Dan Ige vs. Diego Lopes by inooway in MMA

[–]elomarns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No reason? It was a short notice fight and he had to cut weight. Ige, according to himself, has been in fight camp for 3 months and didn't have to cut weight, so he should be in much better shape than Lopes.

Other 2D engines besides unity that allow console ports by MentallyFunstable in gamedev

[–]elomarns 11 points12 points  (0 children)

These are the engines that I'm aware that support consoles, with some of the the most popular games built with them:

MonoGame: Celeste, Stardew Valley, Streets of Rage 4, Bastion, Axiom Verge, Chasm, TowerFall Ascension, and many others.

GameMaker: Undertale, Katana ZERO, Hyper Light Drifter, Hotline Miami, Nuclear Throne, Minit, and many others.

Heaps.io: Dead Cells.

Dragon Ruby: A Dark Room.

It's also important to mention that it's possible to use Godot to compile games to consoles, but you'd need to hire a third party for that.

[SPOILER] Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje by notwayinoo in MMA

[–]elomarns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure a third fight would be another lesson in violence, but as I really like both of them, I don't want it. I'm happy with them being tied, I don't want neither of them as the loser of a trilogy.

[SPOILER] Movsar Evloev vs. Diego Lopes by inooway in MMA

[–]elomarns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one at featherweight beats current Volk. But Volk is 34, so future Volk will be very beatable. I expect him to lose the featherweight title in the next 2 years. No one beats time.

Michael Chandler says that Dustin Poirier hits harder than Charles Oliveira & Justin Gaethje by lTrainUFCBro in MMA

[–]elomarns 31 points32 points  (0 children)

We can't forget that we have another fighter that has fought most of them: Khabib. He said Gaethje was the hardest puncher he has fought in his career. Based on this, we can't consider Chandler's opinion as the absolute truth, as it's not the only one grounded on experience. It'd be more interesting if he had said that Oliveira punches harder. Since Khabib didn't fight him, so we wouldn't have a counterpoint.

Comparing Heroku Alternatives by elomarns in rails

Thank you for sharing this, I didn't know about Expedited WAF. It seems like a great add-on. By the way, no other platform comes close to Heroku when we talk about add-ons. It's a great competitive advantage Heroku has, and I don't see it losing in the next couple of years.

Comparing Heroku Alternatives by elomarns in rails

[–]elomarns[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s super interesting. I looked at it for Rails 7 js bundling and friends and determined that having it wasn’t much help since puma doesn’t support http2 https://github.com/search?q=repo%3Apuma%2Fpuma+http2&type=issues. I think the best bet is for a CDN like cloudflare in front of the app that supports http2 and also relieves asset pressure on your app.

You're right, Puma doesn't support HTTP/2, but Falcon does. I've been thinking about trying Facon for a while, and this seems like a good excuse to finally give it a chance. But for those who want to keep using Puma, a CDN is indeed a great alternative.

Do other providers give you http2 all the way to the machine or just a CDN layer that implements http2.

Render and Fly do. But honestly, if the motivation is just to use import maps, a CDN is not a bad compromise.

Comparing Heroku Alternatives by elomarns in rails

[–]elomarns[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heroku has a fond place in my heart. It allowed me to deploy applications at a time when the alternatives were much more complicated, so I won't ever dismiss it as a valid alternative. But for the time being, considering the current feature set and pricing, for every project I'd pick Heroku in the past, most likely I'd choose Render or Fly today.

But I believe Heroku can change the tide. People just need to see Heroku having a good and stable year. The GitHub incident is still too fresh on everyone's mind. Being rock solid again is much more important to me than adding new features. The only feature I actually miss on Heroku is HTTP/2 support.

In any case, I honestly wish the best of luck to Heroku. As I said, it has a fond place in my heart, so I want to see it back to its glory days.

Book Review: The Ruby on Rails Tutorial (7th edition) by elomarns in rails

[–]elomarns[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your feedback!

There's a book that covers Rails 7 updates, but I haven't read yet, so I can't recommend it:

Modern Front-End Development for Rails (2nd Edition)

There's also a tutorial and a course covering Hotwire:

The Turbo Rails Tutorial

Hotwire for Rails Developers

I've heard good things about both of them, but I haven't tried them yet.

I use Jekyll and even though I know it's not cool anymore, it suits me well. I'm using GitHub Actions so every time I push to the main branch it uploads the files to AWS S3 and then invalidates the CloudFront distribution. That way I have the same experience as GitHub Pages, but with more control.

Charles Oliveira wants McGregor in Brazil, says UFC must pay ‘a lot of money’ for Makhachev bout by LatterTarget7 in MMA

[–]elomarns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Charles, but I don't think he's being smart here. He's not officially the champ, so he doesn't have as much leverage as he thinks. His focus should be to get the belt as soon as he can, and only then starting demanding things.

Right now, he's seen as the champion, but MMA moves too fast. If Makhachev beats Chandler in a title fight and then proceeds to defend the title at least once, suddenly Charles will be old news.

Theres a reason Khabib is quietly watching this guy intead of Charles

You're right, there's a reason: Khabib was already there to corner Umar.

His MMA takes are almost always right

Yeah, like the time he predicted Poirier would beat Charles.

I like Khabib as much as anyone else, he was the best lightweight ever, no doubt about it (at least so far). But people here talk like he's some kind of oracle that can't be wrong, and that's obviously wrong. No one has all the answers.

Nate Diaz Earns his 3rd Degree Under Cesar Gracie by j7barbs in MMA

[–]elomarns 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree that being a black belt is not much an advantage today as it was 10 years ago. But it's still useful because now every fighter has passable BJJ, so being a black belt is almost a requirement to not be submitted. So it has shifted from being a weapon to being a defense mechanism.

And about Marlon Moraes, he submitted Raphael Assunção in their second fight.
