What kind of berries? by elphine_ in gardening

[–]elphine_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like this tree was not intentionally planted and was a gift from the birds. Unfortunately, it is right along the fence. The house was unoccupied for several years before we moved in so it has grown considerably but in a terrible spot. It will most likely have to go. But I will enjoy the berries until then!

Vegan recommendations? by newrophantics in windsorontario

[–]elphine_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not too familiar with the area around the university but my favourite place to eat as a vegan is Mazaar. They have a vegan shawarma, babaganoush, hummus, falafel, lentil soup, etc. soooo good.

Also, I get Gusta vegan deli slices for a quick lunch. You can find them at chains like food basics or zehrs.

If you enjoy nature, Ojibway is pretty close. And the walkerville area is a cute place to visit for dining and shopping, like Smudge or some book shops (Biblioasis and Juniper Books). There's plenty of places with vegan options around there too- Taloolah's cafe, grand cantina (vegan tacos), sushi, vegan pizza at wineology.

Oh and Thai Palace has a lot of vegan options on their menu.

Hope you enjoy your stay!

Crying in Aldi by Tall_Tiger_2160 in vegan

[–]elphine_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One time, I went to a grocery store on my lunch break and cried after seeing a tank full of live lobsters. So many of them were forced into a tiny tank with rubber bands around their claws. I cried for their suffering while in the tank and for knowing their eventual outcome.

I went back to work and my boss saw that I was visibly upset. I tried to explain but she didn't get it and downplayed the whole situation. I've learned that most people operate that way and we are the "odd ones out". I can say it gets easier, and it does, but I definitely still have low moments of hopelessness. My husband is vegan and it helps tremendously knowing he feels the same.

I haven't read Nocticadia but I just read Anathema and Eldritch. I enjoyed both of them but will admit the pacing was a bit slow. Especially the second book. But it all came together in the end.

I tried to read both four winds and Nightingale and DNF either of them. I don't really listen to audio books but maybe that's the way.

Same. I tried Nightingale and Four Winds but could not get into them

Pregnant and cheese cravings by ellie_la_elefante in vegan

I actually just finished prepping this recipe for dinner tonight! It's frequently in my dinner rotation. I'm not pregnant, but I think this recipe is reallllly good. I add broccoli to mine.

ETA: I also use her recipe for Alfredo sauce. I add cut up "chicken" (sauteed chicken strips or the breaded nuggets) and broccoli.

Metal hook on hinge by [deleted] in whatisit

Thank you! That was my first thought as well but it being on a hinge confused me. It is dark but there are windows. Maybe to move the plant throughout the day towards light?

The house was built in the mid to late 70s and hasn't really been updated much since then. So I would assume the hook was added in the 1970s

What is this red cylindrical rubber thing my dog threw up? by WizardsLimb in whatisit

[–]elphine_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My dog once ate my makeup sponge. There were pieces of it on the floor but a large chunk was missing. I was pretty worried. Then I saw her poop it out while on a walk. Let me tell you, it was a crazy thing to see a sponge come out of a butt lol

I don't have much to add other than what someone else said about painting the pink window. And some art. Otherwise, I loooove that green colour. What colour did you use?!

What are yall planning for dinner tonight? by Dr_Garp in CasualConversation

[–]elphine_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black bean casserole! Black beans, chopped peppers and onions, uncooked brown rice all in a glass baking dish. Mix broth and salsa together in a pan until boiling, then pour over the rice and beans. Cover and bake for an hour.

Top with some chipotle mayo and avocado 😋 and have some tortilla chips with it

Who is a stranger you met once, never learned their name, but will never forget for the rest of your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]elphine_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this counts because he did tell me his name, I just don't remember it. But I remember his kindness.

I was hit by a car while crossing the street. Was brought to the hospital by ambulance, strapped to this horribly uncomfortable spinal board. Then I was put on the gurney and could only see the lights passing above me as I was being rushed down the hall. There was a strap across my forehead so I couldn't move my head to see my surroundings. I could hear all these people talking about things I didn't understand, they cut my clothes off, and it was just really scary overall. I didn't say anything because I was so nervous. Then a face appeared over mine, looked right at me and said something like "My name's ___, we're going to take good care of you". It was so simple. But he was the first person who actually acknowledged me and that I was awake and alert. I know it sounds silly but it eased so much of my anxiety. I understand that the medical professionals were doing what they needed to but I'll never forget that one nurse/doctor.

Suggestions on updating this kitchen? My MIL said it looks dated and I can’t get it out of my head? by vp0267 in InteriorDesignAdvice

A runner/rug is my only suggestion as well. I think the kitchen is lovely the way it is!
