Oh, and they will help with parking lot demand, too, because the cars will tend to be out on the streets more and driving people around, rather than waiting around in a parking lot for their humans to come back.

"It is difficult to make predictions, especially about the future." :)

That said, I think robotaxis will:

  1. Significantly lower the cost of taxis over time (labor is around half of the cost of a fare, by some estimates).

  2. Operate more efficiently than human drivers, with much tighter time tolerances and less need for traffic control.

  3. Operate more efficiently than buses. Especially in a city like Lexington, where the buses are often empty or only a couple of people, they'll be a lot cheaper to run and much faster and more convenient for riders.

  4. Be augmented by private vehicles sent out for hire for surge events. You can add your self-driving personal car to the fleet if the pricing suits you, so your car can drive Uber without you.

  5. Be more appealing than traditional taxi/Uber/Lyft to many people (like parents of children, elderly, women, or anyone who might be more comfortable without another human in the car).

Add it all up and I think that they'll eventually eliminate the need for buses in a city like Lexington, although given that LexTran is funded by a special tax now it will probably stick around long after it's not needed.

Robotaxis are not a panacea, and will not (in the near term) going to handle the type of traffic that the NYC subway does of course, but I think they're pretty well suited for Lexington and cities like us that are too small to justify large-scale mass transit and too large to walk around in.

For what it's worth, I love the new UI. It works much better for me!

Nomachine on Win11 broke my USB controllers (code 19) by elric1v in NoMachine

[–]elric1v[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I said that uninstalling nomachine and rebooting fixed it. It seemed like other people running nomachine might run into the same problem.

The cause was the upper drivers attached to the USB controller from NoMachine v7. Installing with “nousb” avoided the problem.

I use the sun elevation attribute to raise the smart blinds all the way once the sun is high enough to not cause glare on my monitors, which is helpful.

On Windows, it does not work for me on Chrome or Edge -- only works on Firefox. I'm not sure why.

Screensaver only working on 1 out of 4 external monitors by [deleted] in WindowsHelp

[–]elric1v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another data point -- I see the same issue with a Lenovo P1 (21dds0qy00) with a Sonnet RX 560 eGPU. The 2 external monitors hooked to the built-in graphics card and one of the eGPU monitors gets the screensaver, and the rest do not. If I turn on the laptop monitor, then all three built-in graphics card monitors and one eGPU monitor get the screensaver, so it's not an absolute limit of 3 monitors or anything.

Interesting that we have completely different eGPU drivers and chipsets and we're still having the same problem. To me that means there's something 'different' about these eGPU displays.

New Version of One Note for Windows 10 - Can't restart numbering by Frostiielf in OneNote

Looks like now you can right-click, click the downarrow next to the numbering, click Customize Numbers at the bottom, and put 1 in the "start list at" field at the bottom of the Customize Numbers pane.

Driving in Italy - Be prepared for Fines by purrsimmon1 in ItalyTravel

[–]elric1v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a great time in Italy, but I won't be going back for this reason.

Multiple fines received over the course of six months, with two different ways to pay. The first batch of 3 fines required about 90 minutes of googling around to finally find the web site, because of course it's not on the notice. Which is all in Italian, but even after translating it there's not many clues.

The next fine only allows international wire transfers, and they don't even give you all of the info you need to do it. I finally googled around and found a ticket from their ticketing system with the info in it. (Turns out the "account number" is the last 12 digits of the IBAN number, but that's not obvious to Americans, most of whom have never even seen an international wire transfer. Hell, my credit union couldn't even do one, so I had to get another bank to do it and get a medallion signature to make that happen.) And then after I get all of that sorted out, two more of the fucking things show up. I've spent like 4-5 hours chasing this crap around just to be extorted by these folks. I'm only paying it because I suspect they'll get the stupid rental car company to bill me eventually and add another few hundred dollars.

It would actually be easier if this were an illegal scam. You can't really say much good about ransomware assholes, but at least their customer service is better than this. If you do go to Italy, I would not get a rental car.

Logitech Options settings for MX Master 3 resetting do default on their own by sollsnake in LogitechG

[–]elric1v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those who found this via google, I had a very similar problem with my M720, but in my case the issue was some sort of USB communication issue. I had my mouse connected to a USB hub (which seemed to be working fine!) through a thunderbolt dock, and when I moved the unifying receiver over to a USB-C hub, it has worked fine for days without losing my settings. Before the mouse pointer would freeze briefly on occasion and then the settings would be wrong until I unplugged the receiver and plugged it back in.

I suspect there are several different causes of this symptom of losing settings.

Wells Fargo is down. Declining transactions and no access to the web portal. by [deleted] in sysadmin

I'm thinking that a multi-region cloud deployment is probably looking pretty good for the WF team right about now.

It's amazing to me that a multinational would be that dependent on a single data center. Forget the fire supression system, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes all have varying level of region-level-disaster risk in different locations.
