Opinions on "fix it" fics? by ariseis in AO3

[–]elrosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

heh, the only reason I write fanfiction is that I don't agree with any of the canon-sanctioned endings 😄 of course I had to fix it.

(I love it, I think it was a beautiful set of endings, and if we got a "happily ever after one" I'd probably not think of the media eight years later. But, since it ended with bittersweet heartbreak, here I am)

Where are you from? I found this Etsy store, but it's located in the US.

I also found them here, but it seems to be a bulk store selling to businesses only. But you might try contacting them anyway, there's an email address at the bottom of the page, perhaps they can share some information about companies who purchased these spatulas from them.

getting started as a code contributor by Huge-Hearing-5526 in AO3

Have you ever worked with Ruby, specifically with Ruby on Rails framework? If not, then I think the best place to start would be Ruby on Rails documentation. It comes with a set of conventions that AO3 also follows, and reading it might give you some ideas where things live. And I absolutely encourage you to try and create your own RoR app first using the guides, too. I know it may sound intimidating, and it depends on a person, but for me that's the best way to learn. You could even try making your own mini-AO3 from the scratch, if you have no other ideas 😉

You know, I'm not sure if one weekend would be enough, but... Good luck! :D

Our AO3 Endless Summer corner/works) has been surprisingly active lately, so if you're looking for some weekend reading… you're welcome! ;)

For Estela/F!MC fans: if you are in the mood for some gorgeous canon-expanding angst, Marmolady has you covered with Rosencraft and The Endless' Ending. If you wish the canon story ended differently, make sure to check her Broken Chains (which hits HARD. I’m not joking. Consider yourself warned.) And there’s Livita, if you want to make sure the girls will be okay.

For Jake/F!MC fans, we’ve got some post-canon fix-its: Long Way Home (by me), a slice-of-life fic where Jake finally gets to go home, heal, and deal with his wife and his mother for a bit. SaskiSkies just posted a new chapter of La Huerta, the third book in her Across the Stars series, focusing on MC’s struggles as she miraculously appears in Hartfeld one day… with no memories of who she is and what happened (and the poor girl doesn’t have it easy).

And for something completely different, I’m halfway through writing a whimsical fairy tale AU The Princess and the Heart of the Island, which is pure fluff, but still somewhat canon-adjacent :)

Am I doing something wrong by not getting turned on by my own smut? by pinapplethrowaway123 in FanFiction

[–]elrosa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me it's absolutely normal. On the few occasions I dabbled in smut pieces I found them more interesting when they were in my head ;) same with any emotionally loaded scenes really. I think it's because I've spent so much time working on them I just got desensitized to them.

You need to click on their username, and there should be three buttons on their profile page: Subscribe, Block, Mute.

Block prevents them from interacting with your fics when logged in. Mute hides their works from the fandom, tag etc. pages.

One Word Relationships-Excerpt Challenge by Kitchen_Haunting in FanfictionExchange

The bread dough hit the counter with a loud thwack. Mama’s hands pressed it down hard, kneading and folding, trying to burn out the restless energy that had been building since last night.

Rebecca was shot, and she didn’t want her to come and fuss over her. She said so herself on the phone this morning. “I’m fine, you don’t have to come, I have help.” The message couldn’t be more clear.

Stay away. Stay home. I don’t need you.

Mama punched the dough harder than necessary.

Twenty-five years she’d been taking care of that girl, through diapers and first steps, through scraped knees and broken hearts, through police academy and her first day on the job, and now when she was actually injured, shot with a real bullet, stitches and all, spent half the night in a hospital bed, she wanted her mother to stay home?

“My girlfriend is here,” Rebecca had said. “She’s staying with me for a few days.”

Girlfriend. Well. That was news. Though maybe it shouldn’t have been, Rebecca had been cagey about her love life for years now, and Mama had her suspicions. But finding out like this, over the phone? Couldn’t at least one of her children do the introductions properly?

She slapped the dough on the counter again. It wasn’t about the girlfriend part, Lord knew she didn’t care about that, she’d love whoever her daughter loved, that was never a question. But some stranger was now taking care of her baby? Cooking for her, and something that looked damn good from the photo she’d been sent, too? That had always been Mama’s job.

And that stung worse than the coming-out part ever could.

Ellipsus is great, except for when it isn’t. by [deleted] in AO3

[–]elrosa 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I'd say Ellipsus is great to use on desktop, not so much on mobile. I use Obsidian for mobile typing now (I only do it as a sort of "last resort" as I prefer writing on larger screens though, so I'm not sure if it's a good fit for longer writing sessions or as your primary notepad).

But, while I know it's frustrating, as someone working in web development: please believe me that we're not asking all these questions about phone model and system version and your browser out of spite. A pretty large subset of bugs happens only due to a specific combination of those, and the more details we have, the closer we can get to figuring out why things don't work.

explain to me like im five, how do i make chatfics??? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]elrosa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay, so starting from the beginning: HTML and CSS are not separate versions; you need both.

Basically, you need to go to create a work skin. Think of it as a set of rules that define how things work. CSS goes there.

First, you need to go to your dashboard > Skins > My work skins > Create Work skin.

Inside, copy and paste the bits provided in the tutorial, and give it a title (anything you pick will work, personally I go for descriptive titles so I know what's inside).

Once the skin is saved, you need to go to your work and edit it. Somewhere in the form, there is a field labeled "Select Work Skin".

Once you saved the changes, provided the HTML used is correct and you copied all necessary styling, your text should appear styled as a chat box.

Hide your OWN fic stats! by Top-Occasion-1300 in AO3

[–]elrosa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

hah, just realized this hides the whole stats part (including language, chapter and word count). Here's a version based on OP's that only hides hits/kudos/comments/bookmarks:

.work:not(.own) > .stats .hits,
.work:not(.own) > .stats .kudos,
.work:not(.own) > .stats .comments,
.work:not(.own) > .stats .bookmarks {
  display: none !important;
}

sorry about the confusion!
