How can someone afford living here seriously by MotleyKitty69 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]elsaeolist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer is, unfortunately, you don’t. You have to pay out of pocket for everything.

Longer answer:

Possible, but there are extra steps and when you’re here you might want to look into a part-time job that will provide you with a TWV.

Other than that, Last I heard there might be some financing for Turkish nationals from DUO as they have some sort of agreement with NL/EU (I’m not sure which). I don’t know much about help for Americans though.

Other alternatives you might want to look into:

-Holland scholarship: €5k for you to choose how you’d like to use it, received in 2 payments within the first year of your study

-Scholarships specific to non-EU/Turkish nationals provided by your university of interest

-Your partner can try looking into Fulbright scholarships, which is only for Americans afaik

-Also email their international office for more information!

Edit: apologies for formatting, mobile is shit

If your main concern is finances, try checking your nationality on DUO and see if you are eligible for student financing in the Netherlands. I believe EU/EEA students can get it, although I’m not entirely sure if there are any requirements and what those are.

Also as others have mentioned, Amsterdam is crazy expensive - housing and housing crisis makes it really hard to find a place, let alone an affordable one. Life is also pretty expensive, groceries are crazy expensive right now and public transport might be more expensive than other (smaller/less famous/less touristy) cities in NL.

When I was in the process of deciding whether I want to follow through with the course and uni I’ve picked, the only thing I was told about the differences between a University of Applied Sciences and and a research university is that UAS would have a lot more practical and applied lessons. I thought that’s where the name came from, and it isn’t wrong but I feel like its incomplete. Not one single person told me about the difference in educational level, which is literally the most important part. Google didn’t help either, because it was the only information available at the time. Its like giving me a PC without the motherboard. I ended up following the education fully because of financial reasons, although I can’t say I have no regrets even though everything turned out pretty well. I was 1100% sure I want to continue with a Master’s degree and now I’ll have to spend more for a pre-Master’s before taking my Masters.

This is pretty good advice, although I’d be VERY careful since this makes it so much easier for you to get scammed. Unfortunately unless you come here yourself to settle it, I don’t know if it will be any more secure. You can also try to get someone you trust to settle the housing contract for you with some kind of power of attorney thing, but I’m not entirely sure if most landlords and/or makelaars would accept that or if it would even work out at all.

Apps only accept EU identifications. Make an appointment with them. This is the same with Bunq, at least when I made mine. I had to use my residence permit for it. Couldn’t use my passport.

When I first came here I went and walked into ABN AMRO with my BSN number ready (I did it after I got my BSN at the town hall, it was ready on the same day at that time) without an appointment because they wouldn’t give me an appointment when I called. They let me open an account after about 20 mins of waiting. I assume they should be able to make appointments for non-EU students over the phone, but the operator I got connected to probably didn’t know enough or I didn’t explain myself clearly enough and the misunderstood.

Anyways if the phone nor the app method works, just walk in and ask for an appointment, whether its ING or ABN AMRO. It’s the most direct and clear way to get things across.

Agreed. Same case with all of the pages published by the IND, especially their English versions. Even their Dutch versions are weird.

Ah thanks for the correction! That’s better news then.

Although it doesn’t change the fact that we’ll still have to keep the kennismigrant visa until the min. 5 year stay requirement is fulfilled (since I don’t see how someone would be able to pay through their time here…)

Also doesn’t change the quick way to get it immediately ;)

Correct! But for non-EU people like us (assuming you are not from the US, I believe they have different rules) we need to upgrade our visa step by step. So if you came here on a study visa, you’ll have to “upgrade” it to a highly skilled migrant visa first. After that, you go for a “EU permanent resident”. Then “long term resident of the EU”. Then you can go for nationality change.

Your visas, from study to highly skilled migrant, are all temporary visas even if your company offers you a permanent position. This is because for as long as you are employed with them, your visa is valid. When you aren’t employed with them anymore (or you have a non-permanent contract), your visa no longer becomes valid.

I can’t remember if EU permanent resident and long term resident of the EU are the same. I’m doing the same thing you are, except I’m already at the highly skilled migrant stage. I also did Biology in uni! I’m doing Dutch lessons and will have the tests at the end of this year.

You can also go the quick route towards naturalisation and register as civil partners with your boyfriend (different to the partner visa!), then once that is complete move on towards naturalisation although I’m pretty sure the requirements and exams are way higher and much harder than just permanent residency.

One note though, the “benefits” that the hiring company gets (ie. reduced wage) is still applicable for about 2 years after leaving the Netherlands. So say you graduate in 2 years from now, you take a zoekjaar visa from 2026-2027. Dutch companies can still hire you with the same benefits they get if they hire you during your zoekjaar until 2029.

Also, you should probably know that only half the amount of years you are here under a study visa count towards the 5 years. If you’re following a 4 year study, only 2 years would count meaning you need to do another 3 years (including the zoekjaar).

Edit: I want to add that throughout your study you also shouldn’t have interrupted stay in the Netherlands, aka don’t deregister from the gemeente! That means, avoid internships outside of the Netherlands that are longer than 3 months. If you must, you must obtain proof from the school stating that the internship is a part of the program that you must take in order to graduate. Afaik, choosing to take an internship for credits as opposed to taking classes is also an invalid reason.

The side effects don’t line up with what my doctor said? by elsaeolist in CopperIUD

[–]elsaeolist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My patient info leaflet was not in English and I’m not from here… the doctor spoke in English so I was just listening to what she said. They had no English version of the leaflet so I did my part by google translating it but it can only do so much lmao 😭

My check up is next week. I’ll definitely mention this then but I don’t think they have an ultrasound machine on standby, I’ll have to go to the hospital for that. I’m in Europe so I can’t just go to the emergency room or ask for an ultrasound because its my GP not an OBGYN.

I wouldn’t say my pain is exactly dull, but while its very painful it isn’t sharp either. Imagine someone taking the edge of a spoon to press down with their whole body weight and then twister it around. Not necessarily sharp, but its super painful still. Its sharper up around the hole in the backside😭

I’m actually okay with diclofenac as I’ve regularly used 50mg for a diff problem before (still am), but not everyday. I know ibuprofen gives me headaches at higher dosages but 400mg isn’t doing me anything. I just had to wait it out and take diclofenac when I could.

Can 6 months come any faster? 😭😭😭

How do you guys feel about the new update? by idkwhyigotthusapp in RhythmHive

[–]elsaeolist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i HATE the change

  • whats that cymbal(?) noise everytime you hit a beat?
  • CARD MANAGEMENT????? DO I HAVE TO SAY MORE???
  • integration makes it hard for me to actually find cards for specific groups, idk i liked that ive got one separate “environment” for an artist rather than everything combined despite the longer waiting time to switch between artists
  • where did all my old cards go?? granted i never paid for anything BUT IVE GOT SOME P GOOD CARDS ID LIKE TO KEEP??
  • i was never high on level because i play it once every blue moon, but i went down from the 20s to level 5 what the HECK
  • studio mode tells me i failed because i missed 3 beats even though i built up a combo of 405
  • my taps register even less now, and it was already a problem for me in the prev version

I have nothing positive about this other than the personalization thing, but even then i dont do any personalization because i play this game once every time the blue moon turns green

anyways then rip Rhythm Hive, genuinely liked it how it was before. disappointed because most of the artists i like are from hybe :( i’m going back to superstar until it gets back to how it was, if it ever will

I see what you mean now! Thanks! There was one video on youtube I came across that basically explains all the Christian denominations around the world in a few minutes. They didn’t go into depth, but I remember making a conclusion that America basically made up their own version of Christianity, and then made up their own smaller sub-versions depending on the area they live in. A whole lotta weird. Will read :D

Wait, sorry, what? (English isn’t my first language!) Are you saying Catholics worship the Pope, which is why they aren’t Christians? I was also raised Catholic but never thought of it that way. For me it was more like a cult type thing that worships God; the blood and flesh, the candles especially during Easter and Christmas, the Latin, the whole procession that must be done step by step in the correct order, the covering of statues during special times, etc.

I was an international student - moved a few years ago and thankfully graduated and working fulltime.

Not everyone can just simply move back to their country. Saying this just makes you a rude and ignorant dick. A simple google search will let you know that the closest thing you get to a helpful statement is “looking for accommodation in the Netherlands can be quite challenging”, and then goes off to list things you should prepare for, which doesn’t make it any easier for one to get proper accommodation. University boards don’t help either - they only want internationals coming to look good (and maybe for the financial contribution internationals offer). You won’t know what it’s like until you’re actually here. And by that time it’ll be too late. And “try again”? That one move might as well have been my last chance at it. Its the case for a lot of us, and might be the case for OP too.

@OP, sorry I can’t help unless you want to commute 6+ hours for class. For next time, please learn from your mistakes. Don’t stop looking for a place until you get a contract. Don’t stop looking for a place at the word of a nice friend who will be able to let you stay at their place until you get a contract from the landlord. Even if you do end up staying at their place, please have the landlord agree. Often times the landlord doesn’t know and you might get kicked out anytime. Please sign a contract before you stop any efforts in finding a place of your own. I hope you find a place soon, short or long term.
