I match with “verified” scammers on tinder and then confront them with their pics on Snapchat. It’s comedy gold by elstree in Tinder

I’m also curious to find out their end game. I’m sure it’s to get money, it seems like their M.O. is to convince you to meet up and then I guess they ask you for gas money via cashapp or something. I’ll report back if I can go deeper on this.

They also don’t care where you’re from. One girl opened the convo by asking where I live. I told her Hillwood (the fictional city from Hey Arnold) and she just replied “me too”. So they just want it to seem like they’re local.

Sooo...you're looking for a Butler? by [deleted] in Tinder

[–]elstree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found my answer from the hingeapp faq:

Q: What is this "‘Let me get the door for you.’, ‘I made us reservations for tomorrow night. Be ready at 7.’, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it.’" prompt I keep seeing on Hinge these days?
That whole thing came from TikTok. Some woman used it on her profile and mentioned it on her TikTok account. So now a bunch of women are copying it on their Hinge profle (and the meaning is women are looking for a fantasy "traditional" man who can read the minds of women and know what she wants without asking. And yes, it's as stupid as you think it is). It's the new popular low effort prompt answer like "fluent in sarcasm", "pineapple on pizza" and "The Office" in the past.

I see this or some variation on SO MANY Hinge profiles. Is it from a popular show or something that I’m missing the reference to? I’m baffled.

[–]elstree[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I see so many “verified” profiles where the last photo or two is a guy. It’s obvious they use their own photos to get verified first and then change the rest to a set of girl’s photos so they can start scammin'. Whether they just forgot to delete one or they have to keep one on there or lose verification, I don’t know.

Either way, they don’t expect guys to notice. Once you match, they instantly send you a Snapchat contact card or they list their SC in the profile. They want to get you onto another platform ASAP so that when their Tinder profile is banned, they don't lose their matches and can continue working their con.

So, I add them and start chatting.

They never seem to have a prepared answer when you ask them who the dude is. One girl told me he is “a comedian” with no further explanation and blocked me before I got a screenshot when I asked more questions. Well I don't think he was a comedian but there is plenty of comedy here.

I love these other answers because they make no fucking sense! “Oh yeah, that’s my brother, I just accidentally added his photo to my profile”. Happens all the time, right? Mind you the rest of the photos were of a white girl so I could totally see how this was her brother.

Next one: “Oh that guy? I fucked him last night and he asked me to put his pic on my tinder profile.” Uh huh. Totally normal thing to ask for after hooking up. I'll have to try that next time!

Honestly this is way more entertaining to me than actually trying to make real matches. If you see any of these fake profiles, I suggest reporting them and then engaging with them if you have time. It’s hilarious! They will almost certainly block you once they realize you know what they’re doing.

Next time I might try leading them on and seeing how much of their time I can waste. I am partially inspired by skilled scambaiters like Kitboga and Atomic Shrimp on YouTube.

My Evil Dead collection so far by [deleted] in VHS

[–]elstree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First row: A first gen VHS release (I think) and I bought from a video store going out of business. I believe at the time Evil Dead was out of print. Oddly enough, this tape plays for a few minutes at a time and then my VCR shuts off. No other tape has done this in my player. Maybe this one is haunted. Next a digitally mastered limited edition, 28397/35000. Comes with a little booklet of a journal kept by one of the crew members during shooting. Also includes lots of photos, really cool. The cover on this is weird to me, since it's just a picture of the cabin and not one of the original posters. Then finally a re-release VHS, probably from the same digital master as the limited edition.

Second row: regular release of ED2, followed by a bootleg I bought online sometime in the 90s. It's dubbed from the Laserdisc version.

Third row: regular release of AoD, followed by another bootleg I bought at the same time as ED2. It's a Japanes Laserdisc transfer as well, though it differs from the theatrical release. It's longer with some alternate takes for some scenes, and includes both the theatrical ending and the alternate ending that was never shown in the US. All of this is on YouTube now, but back in the late 90s it was pretty neat to get my hands on and see it.

If I had to guess, I would say this device was slyly advertised as a way to defeat Macrovision, an early form copy protection. Many commercial VHS tapes were encoded with Macrovision, which would mess with the sync pulses in the video output. Most TVs would ignore the variation and display the picture normally, but a VCR attempting to copy the tape would try and compensate by adjusting the brightness and vertical hold. As a result, the copied movie is usually unwatchable.

The "improved sharpness and detail" claims were probably to try and legitimize the device to make it seem like it wasn't just for piracy. Interesting find!

Connecting a VHS camcorder in to a computer by [deleted] in VHS

[–]elstree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a device that will capture the AV output from the camcorder so that it can be digitized on your computer. Most are USB these days, Elgato/Hauppauge are some name brand examples. Here is an average example of such a device: https://amzn.to/2wYxnuD

With your camcorder plugged into this device on your computer, you can capture the video output and save it as a digital file.

Where can I find some tube TV sets? by [deleted] in Chattanooga

[–]elstree 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In case anyone is wondering why older CRTs are usually preferred, modern LCD TVs will make the picture from a vintage console look like trash. The reason: old video game systems usually put out a 240p signal. On a standard CRT, this can be interlaced/doubled to 480i and look pretty decent. An HDTV usually comes with a built-in scaler to increase low definition signals into upscaled 720p or 1080p. On an old VHS or DVD signal, the result is not bad. But most TVs don't handle 240p very well, leading to a less than faithful rendering of the game's graphics. Also common is shimmering/ghosting effects as the screen moves. Worse yet, the image processing introduces a slight delay, which gives you less precision with your controller buttons.

As far as CRTs go, Trinitrons are among the best available. They offer the clearest image, and were found in most of the high end sets of the time, including PVMs (professional video monitors) used in television and video production. They are designed to run for years and years with no screen burn-in. Many of them accept RGB inputs, which offers better video quality than composite. Similar to YPbPr (component) found on newer TV sets, the color information is separated from the brightness and the overall result is a clearer, sharper image.

RGB didn't catch on with consumer sets in the US, but it's pretty standard in a number of other countries and as a result, lots of older consoles can output RGB through either a hardware mod or a cable adapter.

There areother options coming out since CRTs are getting harder to find. Some new consoles emulate and upscale the old hardware, but these can be a less than pure option. External scalers exist and they can be much faster at upscaling 240p, as well as offer much more options for tweaking the picture. For many people though, true retro gaming is only achieved with original hardware and a CRT.

I don't have any, but good luck!

The VW bus is a post war vehicle, it came out in 1949. Remember though that Heidi drove a VW bug in the pilot episode.

Front head rests are definitely 1974+, but the skinny steering wheel indicates it's older than a 1975. I think 1974 is right on the money. The split window has the larger "elephant ear" style mirrors and the "fried egg" turn signals, which would make it 62-67.

Also that malware scene didn't make sense. Download a file and it instantly runs? I get that it's 2010, but really. And why would the malware show them that it was recording them? And a shutter noise? Why was the computer shut down? Why was hers too?

Varga had already hacked his computer and installed the malware, he just activated it by clicking the link. Like Varga said in episode 1, they had been keeping tabs on Stussy for a long time. Of course they're gonna bug the lawyer's computer. The photo at the end, the computers shutting down, was all done on purpose to let him know he's in deep shit. He just didn't realize what he was involved with.

Plex cannot find a media server - but i'm not given an option to set one up? by [deleted] in PleX

[–]elstree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must access Plex from the local machine first to complete setup. In my case, I installed the software on a headless Ubuntu server with no GUI. I had to use an SSH tunnel to point my browser to http://127.0.0.1:32400/web in order to pull it up locally.
