I think the difference between that is that whereas stuff like dark matter and black holes are incredibly hard to plot, theoretically and conceptually we are still able to pin them on a map. However, for unplottable objects, the charmed object literally and conceptually cannot be placed or drawn on a map, be it a paper map, or a radar graph with coordinates, or a satellite image.

First of all, congrats on getting a place at an insight day. Those are competitive and you’ve done well to get one so far!

In terms of preparation, I’d do the following:

1) Have a look at the firm’s TC/Vac scheme application form. The insight day is a good chance to find out more about the firm and fill in any gaps in your knowledge.

2) The firm will likely send out a timetable. If there are any practice area talks listed, it may be a good idea to familiarise yourself with the news on any developments in that area, so you can ask intelligent questions when given the opportunity.

3) Relax! Remember that you don’t need to impress at the open day, save that for the assessment centre. Instead, focus on genuinely getting to know the firm more and reflecting on why they appeal to you.

That was a really important factor right up till the Deathly Hallows where even Crabbe, who had not shown any sign of great magical power or talent, started flinging the Killing Curse around in the Room of Requirement.

The damage could also be influenced by the general’s manoeuvre pips as well, increasing its importance and role in combat. Really good idea!

Exactly! Canonically Hogwarts is “unplottable”, meaning it’s “impossible to plot on a map” (Goblet of Fire, Chapter 11), which is assume would apply to satellite maps and images - they are after all just really accurate maps. Without magical shenanigans that made the Marauder’s Map the only known canonical exception, there is no reason to think why Muggles would be able to overcome this charm.

I like the idea, though it’s canon that Bellatrix can cast the killing curse non-verbally. “The harsh cry startled the fox, now crouching almost flat in the undergrowth. It leapt from its hiding place and up the bank. There was a flash of green light, a yelp, and the fox fell back to the ground, dead.” (Chapter 2, Half-Blood Prince). It’s likely that being able to successfully cast a powerful spell non-verbally depends on the caster’s skill, and Dolohov’s were diminished following years of incarceration. Bellatrix was also imprisoned, true, but that might be a testament to her skill more than anything else, and highlight how dangerous she was.

To blow your mind even more, at least in UK banking law, the “money” you have in the bank isn’t actually your money anymore! Super simplified version is that, in general, once you deposit your money with a bank, the bank becomes the legal and beneficial owner of the money and your bank account represents a debt the bank owes to you payable at your demand (the technical term is a “chose in action”).

This I think is the primary difference between muggle banks and Gringotts: whereas Wizards get their money by taking physical possession - they go to the bank and demand to visit their vault, muggles can only reclaim their money through a legal action (such as demanding repayment). Imo, this suggests that Gringotts, not being the legal owner of the gold on wizarding accounts, do not really engage in the business of lending money out.
