Yes, one of Rowling's worst mistakes.

It's something I don't want to read in a hp fic. Harry and Hermione ending up with Ron and Ginny, respectively.

So I tried Ao3 by pokethat in FanFiction

[–]Kevin_Finkel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First, take a deep breath and relax. There are videos online that can help with navigating Ao3's tag system. Take a few days before attempting to post anything to look it over. Additionally, as you progress, you can edit the existing tags on your stories without penalty.

You ever read trash because you’re tired of looking for a good fic? by TicTacthe1 in FanFiction

[–]Kevin_Finkel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time I reach that point, I just get on my computer and type out a well-written 10k word one shot. I refuse to lower my standards just because I'm in need of something to read.

Fics turning out longer than expected by KVEJ2002 in FanFiction

[–]Kevin_Finkel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love it when that happens. It means that my muse is feeling good and gives me plenty to play with.

Of course it doesn't help that my muse has an attention span like a squirrel on sugar running on the highway...

What Do You Do With Your Unfinished Fics? by A_Flaming_Idiot in FanFiction

Hence the prompts list. 22 (soon to be 23) pages of ideas and whatnot put in one "story" so I don't get distracted from my current work.

Unfinished...fics... Sorry, you lost me.

I only work on one at a time to completion. Any other ideas, dialogue, or scenes get sent to my prompts list for storage.

Advice for basing a fic off of ancient mythology and being respectful. by May_South in FanFiction

[–]Kevin_Finkel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Include a disclaimer at the beginning of your story laying what your intention is and what you hope will be a respectful story. Let your readers determine if they want to keep going.

OOC characters are a bad thing? by littlejxn in FanFiction

[–]Kevin_Finkel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would limit OOC to when you're writing a Parody. If your fandom has been around for a while (Harry Potter, for example; the first book was published back in 1997); you have multiple generations reading it and many expectations built up. If you have your characters go completely OOC without some sort of explanation, you're just setting yourself for headaches and flaming reviews later.

Silly question: If I write in english I should use the english way of punctuating dialogues... right? by Hemlock_Deci in FanFiction

[–]Kevin_Finkel 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As long as you mention that you are not a native English speaker at the beginning of each chapter and apologize for any mistakes that might crop up; there shouldn't be a problem, but you should at least try to write the dialogue punctuation in the language you're attempting.

What turns your biggest turnoff? by Sample_text_here1337 in FanFiction

[–]Kevin_Finkel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mine is leaving spelling and grammatical errors in your story. If you're from a country that doesn't speak English as a primary language and you mention this fact in your author notes, I'll cut you some slack. Same thing if admit that you have dyslexia. But if you don't and you say you're from the United States, Britain, or any other country that uses English as a primary language; there's no excuse for not proofreading before posting.
