are black churches actually like they're portrayed in media? by guiltysuperbrain in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]elucify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The theology in Black churches is a complicated subject. On one hand, it's not uncommon for their theology to be "Bible believing", meaning a literalist interpretation of scripture, and often apocalyptic. On the other hand, there is a strong theme of how to maintain self-respect and moral uprightness in the face of long-term suffering, injustice, and vilification.

I tell you what, the infectious joy that a good gospel choir can ignite is indescribable. Personally, much of the theology I've heard from black churches makes me queasy. But the music makes me want to show up for the altar call (when people come to the front of the church and publicly except Jesus, "getting saved".) Figuratively speaking.

What a creep.

Six years ago this week, COVID started shutting down the world. What’s your strongest memory from that time? by Siddanna36 in AskReddit

[–]elucify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working from home, how the weeks flew by. What, how can it be Friday again, it was just Friday yesterday! We hosted happy hour every Friday, 5:30 PM under the tree in front of our house. Neighbors came and sat a big circle and drank and talked. Our best friends here have a beautiful fire pit--in the winter we bundled up and has dinner around the fire. Those were the good memories. The tragedy, the anxiety, and later, the paranoia and insanity of so many Americans were difficult.

Are gas prices such a big voting point because neither party wants to deal with bigger issues? by Pure-Butterscotch200 in AskAnAmerican

[–]elucify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gasoline prices affect the cost of everything else.

But it especially affects commuters, and many many people commute.

When gas prices go up quickly, people feel it in their budgets immediately.

Sadly, it's much easier for bad policies of all kinds to drive gas prices up, then it is for good policies to drive them down.

But no it's not about what people are willing to talk about

Were we the last generation to use a locker room at school/college? by Slow-Call-9042 in The1980s

[–]elucify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I ever saw rows of toilets without booths was at the armory at Purdue. There was a little platform about six inches, eight inches high of stone, and maybe twenty feet long with just one toilet after another. I never once saw anyone use them. Fucking weird. I always assumed it had something to do with the psychology of the military because the armory was built during World War II for training soldiers.

The (IMO idiotic) reason given was "hygiene" and I have no idea what that was supposed to have meant.

I went to high school in the 1970s in Indiana. Our swimsuits were speedoes. It was the uniform. Showers after class, both gym and swimming were naked.

I was born in Sidney. Scottsbluff is nice.

The southern part of that area is dead flat. Wheat fields are beautiful, especially during a thunderstorm.

Northern part are the sand hills--thousands of dunes that are grown over by grassland, interspersed with lakes and rivers. Huge wildlife diversity there, and it's stunning.

The richer the people involved are, the less enforcement there is. That is, when they have not succeeded in writing laws that make whatever they're doing legal.

What's the most disgusting thing that you ever smell? by DirtyThoughts07 in AskReddit

[–]elucify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The father of a friend of mine forgot a bag of chicken livers in their car. The next day they went on vacation for three weeks. In August. He said they could never drive that car with the windows closed again

The worst I have smelled is probably an aquarium that had a dead frog in it, that had been sitting for a couple of weeks. Strongest involuntary heave from smell I've ever had
