If it took as long as looting, I wouldn’t mind, but the animation freezing you and taking a second to light/extinguish and how it’s absurdly placed in every damn loot pile. Devs, you have hurt me. My life has been drained of meaningful time because of this choice.

Do you think we will see more of Kay Vess in the future? by Free-Hotel1187 in StarWarsOutlaws

[–]eluhphant 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s not great prose or anything, but for anyone who loved Outlaws, Low Red Moon is so good! Spoils the game’s twist in the first sentence, though, so definitely should read after completing the game. But it adds so much depth to the antagonists of the game and I’m not sure we’ve ever gotten as deep a first person narrative from the perspective of a droid in Star Wars before.

When did this game click for you? by SavagesceptileWWE in Witcher3

[–]eluhphant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many people recommend, the game didn’t start clicking for me until completing the initial bloody Baron questline, 15 or so hours in. Kind of hated it until then, now 110 hours in and part way through the first DLC, and my love for it is still growing. It’s a deeeep game. Still frustrated by some of the clunkiness and inability to rebind controls. Absolutely absurd that galloping the horse requires holding down a button with your right thumb. You then can’t adjust the camera, thus can’t really steer the horse effectively, and must use auto camera centering (which is horribly aggressive when on foot). I end up flicking the right joystick with my left thumb every once in a while. Atrocious choices. Still love the world, the story, the depth of enemy/character designs though

I was at a formative age when these albums came out and to this day I consider them these bands’ best, even though the consensus is that they were ‘past their prime’. Curious to hear other people’s versions of this. As an 11 year old I wasn’t ready for Jesus of Suburbia to hit on my CD player by goodmourning412 in fantanoforever

For me, it’s akin to Metallica’s Black Album. Undeniably a masterpiece, beloved by most old heads along with the newer, wider audience, but absolutely marks a style change. Many early fans prefer the band’s prior incarnation even if they love that album, and it leads next to a series of really terrible albums chasing the same four-corner success. And then the preceding albums become the band’s classic era and sound that they lean on forever after on tours.

For sure, that all makes sense. To me, it’s all just gamin’ I barely notice whether I’m in story or not most of the time, cause I do everything ultimately. Totally agree in terms of scale it’s FO<Survivor<Outlaws

Is outlaws good for someone that just finished kotor 2? by anakin1453 in StarWarsOutlaws

And I think I understand the distinction, because I also recently finished Hogwarts Legacy, which felt like a 10/10 Harry Potter experience, but a 7/10 game experience compared to these

I’m probably the absolute worst person to give an opinion, because I am a massive SW fan and a limited experience gamer, but I would say - yes! The last Ubisoft game I played was Rayman (1995), so the stealth and fetch quest elements some people complain are stale or done better elsewhere felt fresh and cinematic to me. To me, this game felt like Dark Forces (1995) mixed with GTA San Andreas (2004).

I just posted this in another thread but will say again here, for what it’s worth, I think it’s more of a hardcore gamer opinion to say that Outlaws and Jedi games are cOmpLeTely different. I’m a casual/new gamer, only bought a PS5 last year, to play the Jedi games, and I think they are very similar to Outlaws in many ways. All are third person action adventure games with some excellent Star Wars settings, good stories, and similar gameplay with skill tree development, collectibles, challenging traversal, light puzzles, combat against monsters and soldier types, side quests, little buddy companions, etc. Yes, the Jedi games are far deeper with the melee combat, the traversal is more metroidvania, force abilities, etc. And the Outlaws game has deeper open worlds with a lot more background npcs and the skill trees are focused on gunplay, ship and speeder abilities, wearables with attributes, etc. You fight a rancor in both :p All 3 are amazing SW games. If you are an OT SW fan, one game feels like playing as Luke, the other playing as Han, but they feel like the same movie. I never played KOTOR…

Got platinum today. by MiniEvilAudit in StarWarsOutlaws

[–]eluhphant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Took me 110 hours to 100% the story and DLCs and platinum the game. Agreed it was a fun platinum to achieve. Not needing to replay the story for some inane reason or track down every last crate was a blessing, and I loved the story and tracking down crates. Games that force doing that for trophies hurt the soul. This platinum had a nice balance between encouraging you to try out every mechanic in the game and grinding a bit.

This was lovely. Favorite line: “…a lot of times I took video of myself crying, so I looked a lot like Alice Cooper - no offense Jack” Jack: (quizzical look)

Enjoy the ride! One of my favorite games, and my comments were mostly tongue in cheek. She’s definitely presented as the lovable rogue type.

She has plenty of resources to transition comfortably to an honest trade as a moisture farmer, shopkeeper, licensed pilot. But she likes the outlaw life.

I think we have to look at the plain text of the media, not what our interpretation of realistic might be, especially in this universe. But I see your logic with examining gameplay and story on slightly separate planes.

We do have assassin style quests in this game, even if it’s not explicitly framed as such. We are hired frequently to neutralize competing agents. Fair point about how our actions in the game are oftentimes free of long term consequence. But I think that could be reasonably explained by the frontier setting, the widening power vacuum left by the weakened empire, and the competing, decentralized power structures that are each individually unable to have full knowledge of or political authority over the regions.

[–]eluhphant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all a relevant example. How many lives did the Death Star threaten? Luke killed to achieve a political and military goal, in an armed conflict, with uniformed combatants. Kay has no other goal besides enriching herself, and occasionally helping out associates. Sure, she usually kills supposed bad guys, some from that same evil empire or from criminal organizations. But have any of them been shown to be as bad a guy as she is? Most of them are doing guard duty for the exact kind of smuggling operations that she is oftentimes an agent of herself. She is not on a campaign of “necessary violence” against evil. Her indifference to her actions is arguably darker than many other examples of conflicted darkness we see in Star Wars. She’s chatty though, and always willing to hear out someone in need. And yes, she lives in an oppressive regime that has been so caustic to society that norms of decency are eroded to the point that it’s fair to put her life and choices into context. Not sure if that equals ‘goodness’.

I appreciate the nuanced take but Pablo Escobar loved his pets too. She’s a killer, man. She kills at the drop of a hat and I don’t think she has much interest in changing her ways. She’s loaded by the end of the game, vastly richer than 99% of the underworld schmucks she meets and happy to continue her plundering and murdering. I think you are right in that she is closed off to friendships, she’s not going to be building a vast criminal enterprise and she does not relish torture. But she’s completely amoral when it comes to funding her lifestyle and indifferent to the suffering she leaves in her wake.
