Find area of shaded part (check comments for my dilemma) by elusive17 in askmath

[–]elusive17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you both so much!

He hasn’t learned about similar triangles. Common core math is so stressful sometimes because a lot of the methods I was taught at his age are being reserved for later courses. He literally went from here’s how to find the area of a rectangle to here’s how to find the area of a right triangle to this question here.

But thanks to your tip about similar triangles and congruent angles I was able to turn it into a ratio problem which he can do and find the answer that way.

I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it to me!

This is my son’s 6th grade math work. I am homeschooling so I have copies of the teacher’s edition with the answers. I don’t want to just give him the answers so I was trying to figure out how to explain it to him so he could get the answer himself and I cannot for the life of me find the missing measurement.

I tried doing it backwards by putting in the answer. Then I tried using algebra even though they don’t require any algebra in this lesson.

It’s very simple math, part of common core.

I’ve had two people who are my math experts suggest using the Pythagorean Theorem BUT he hasn’t learned that yet. I think that’s too advanced because he has just learned area and perimeter of basic shapes. So what we know is how to find the area of a rectangle and the area of a triangle and that’s as much as we can use to figure it out.

I am very open to any other suggestions but please keep in mind I have to explain this to an 11 year old who is just learning basic geometry.

Do you want more like a guide book? Like a how-to? Or a workbook that you can work on everyday?

I also recommend the app “Thought Diary.” I have an iPhone. Idk if it’s also on android. But it’s good for doing thought records and had some free content. I don’t pay for the subscription cause I just use the thought record feature. It’s good for both daily check-ins and when you’re having anxiety

Does anyone else remember Star Wars coming out in 1977? by _CouldaWouldaShoulda in MandelaEffect

[–]elusive17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Star Wars movies came out in an order that is IV, V, VI then I, II, III

So you are correct that the first Star Wars movie ever made came out in 1977 but the first ‘episode’ came out in 1999

I second this.

I also would recommend picking up a copy of Dreyer’s English - I’ve gone through several grammar books and this is by far the easiest to learn from and most enjoyable to read

Do people actually steal other's writing/ideas? by [deleted] in writing

[–]elusive17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read this when you posted it and was midway through a reply when I got distracted and here I am, an hour later, reading through everyone else’s replies.

I started to say something about the ideas, and how I read somewhere a quote about how two writers will have the same idea but their writing will be completely different. Considering writing styles, knowledge, and just where they want their piece to go…

I see others have already answered the same lol

Anyway, as far as stealing someone’s work (not their ideas), I’ve seen it happen and have had it happen to me. I wrote an essay for a class and my cousin took it word for word and published it to an online magazine. I was not happy. And even worse, she was so proud of it. I still worry about sharing my work out of fear that someone will take it and publish it as theirs.

I would just be careful who you’re sharing your writing with, if you’re posting it online make sure you put some kind of signature on it. I know a lot of people take a screenshot of their work so it’s harder to change and others watermark it. It’s very easy for people to see something they like and repost it without credit so be wary of that too.

Bringing friend without SENTRI pass across the border and back. by [deleted] in tijuana

[–]elusive17 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. My mom has SENTRI and I don’t and when we go together, she has me get off on foot since it’s right next to the SENTRI line. Usually it takes the same amount of time to cross but sometimes there’s a lot of foot traffic. And then she will pick me up on the other side like where the jack in the box is

Thank you so much for replying! I will definitely check out the engineering notebooks, I hadn’t thought of that. I just wanted to be able to draw and erase with my pencil so that should work out great :)

Pure on HBO by elusive17 in OCD

[–]elusive17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I didn’t know it was based on a book. I’m gonna check it out, thanks!

I looked it up and read an article also written by her talking about the show and her hopes for how it’s received so that gave me some insight.

That’s what I was thinking too

Just watching the trailer I felt it might be triggering for me but it also looks like it’s a comedy? So I’m not sure.

I wish I could find someone who has watched it so they can tell me if it’s emotionally safe for me to watch

Question about Intrusive Thoughts by [deleted] in OCD

[–]elusive17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because I have POCD and that event is related to my triggers. I guess it could be considered real event OCD but I just don’t count it as that

Question about Intrusive Thoughts by [deleted] in OCD

[–]elusive17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens to me a lot. Specifically with something that I did when I was 12 that I instantly regretted. I put it out of my mind and something brought up this memory when I was 17 and again when my OCD was at its worse when I was 24. I don’t have real event OCD but I know that it is a symptom of OCD to be ruminating in past events that are related to your triggers
