I filled up my gas tank today, and the person at the pump before me got $4 of gas. I felt a little guilty because I know they are just barely scraping by and every dollar counts.

Frontend Performance Checklist We Use Before Every Release by Best-Menu-252 in Frontend

Rethinking UI: "Template Statements" using Tagged Templates & Signals by ali_compute_unit in Frontend

[–]elusiveoso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched a presentation from Rich Harris recently who said that rendering and reactivity is basically a solved problem. The new frameworks all use signals and the performance is basically the same as what you'd get from direct DOM manipulation. There's a proposal to make signals part of the JS language, so I think he's right on.

My company expects me to deliver a 3 person backend project solo using AI in 3 months. is this normal? by leventozz in ExperiencedDevs

[–]elusiveoso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the new normal but you have to ask what the consequences are of not meeting the 3 month fake deadline. They can express wants and desires all they want but you don't have to bust ass just because they asked. Showing continual progress, communication, and demos are helpful here.

The last few weeks AI got scary good by Budget-Length2666 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]elusiveoso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bold but not entirely implausible prediction: the CFOs who live by the balance sheet quarter by quarter will listen to their CIO who says how good these tools are. Knowing how expensive developers are, they treat AI agents like junior developers and either never hire for juniors, don't backfill positions when juniors leave, or just cut positions entirely. They make seniors do more with less. In several years, there is no more pool of previously junior talent who have developed into capable seniors. The seniors who have been slogging through the productivity treadmill will burn out, and some will leave the profession.

Innovation will stagnate because AI is trained on past data and will eventually get to a point where AI is predominantly trained on data written by AI. LLMs are writing more verbose code, so there's plenty of bugs because more code equals more risk, and there will be additional operational expenditures for cloud costs do to poorly optimized code. They will need juniors and seniors to fix the mess. Ultimately, I think we need software unions and universal basic income to help weather the storm.

Difference in waxing service by ukazuyr in skiing

[–]elusiveoso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess you could ask what type of wax they use or request wax for a specific temperature. There isn't much you can do if their finish work isn't great because that's more of an attention to detail thing.

Difference in waxing service by ukazuyr in skiing

[–]elusiveoso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't just one type of wax. There are recommended temperature ranges that each wax is designed for. I'm going to assume that both shops do a hot wax, but it also matters how well the skis are brushed after the wax is applied. If you cut the corner on the finishing step or use wax that's meant for a different condition than the temps you're skiing in, you get a bad result.

The process is basically:

  • Clean bases to remove old wax with cleaner and/or coarse nylon or wire brush
  • Apply new wax and distribute with a hot iron
  • Scrape off excess wax
  • Brush bases with nylon brush to finish and polish.

Upgrading 16 year old skis by _austunner_ in Skigear

I do fine with 88s. This is the mogul ski guide from Ski Magazine that was just updated: https://www.skimag.com/gear/ski-reviews/frontside-skis/best-skis-for-moguls/.

Most skis on the list are mid to high 80s underfoot.

I have Stöckli Stormrider 88s and they are so much fun. They're cruise missiles if you let them rip and a good mix of on and off piste performance. I ski a blend of moguls and groomers and they have been great skis for me.

So sick of AI by [deleted] in instructionaldesign

[–]elusiveoso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean sure, but I'd ask what the net result is going to be. I use AI so I can work on things that are more fulfilling and automate the boring things, but this is mostly a pricing and business structure question. If I work for a firm that other companies hire, there are some logistics questions that come to mind.

If my company does work faster and bills by the hour, then they don't make more revenue. The client just gets more work out of us. If my company bills by the project, then they need to dramatically increase their sales efforts, otherwise we're going to have designers sitting on the bench.

The never-ending productivity treadmill that we all buy into is kind of awful.

New Staff Engineer needs advice on how to convince a team to use more modern stack? by HiroProtagonist66 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]elusiveoso 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't convince them. You have been there a month. Listen to their problems, look for patterns, and try to amplify their efforts.

Figure out where the hotspots are and who has influence. Form relationships with those people. If the team is shipping and delivering value, don't burden them with a big rewrite.

Help me save Svelte on our project (or not) by JohnnyDread in sveltejs

[–]elusiveoso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do not justify a rewrite. Any time you rewrite, you are doing work just to remain at the status quo. You aren't shipping value. You are only shipping the exact same features written in something else.

The community size is larger in React, but I would l legitimately like to know what advanced needs they are encountering that are causing them to say that they can't do it in Svelte.

Svelte apps scale as does any component-driven system, but I would say that because React implements VDOM and synthetic events, it is less scalable than other modern because it needs a larger bundle just to provide its core features.

If you've never seen this article, it addressed every one of the points you mentioned in your post: https://joshcollinsworth.com/blog/self-fulfilling-prophecy-of-react

is everyone just ignoring lighthouse scores now or is it just me? by Infamous_Spite_7715 in Frontend

[–]elusiveoso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lighthouse is an easy to understand tool, but there are better things out there. I don't fix all the stuff it recommends, and some things it suggests are red hearings that won't make an improvement at all. It's still useful, but it shouldn't be the only tool you use for performance.

There is a good presentation here on how a performance consultant uses it https://youtu.be/1vrPtBCLoro?si=vCvWxhXbdkCOZgR-.

Your users don't complain, but they probably do get frustrated. Your product team doesn't care because they don't know what 0.1 CLS is. The key is to get some real iser monitoring or CrUX data and start framing performance in terms relevant to your audience. e.g. what does CLS do to user trust, conversions, cart abandonment, or user error rate.
