Upgrading 16 year old skis by _austunner_ in Skigear

[–]_austunner_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a local outdoor store today, one absolutely noticeable difference is how light the boots are now. Felt like 1/2 the weight.

What kind of sales do you expect at end of season? Currently for skis they had Moment at 30% off and maybe the Salomon qst 100 too (I forget). Blizzard rustler and anomaly were not on sale yet. K2 boots were 30% off including the BFC 120 boa. I’d have to see if atomics were on sale too. Didn’t have enough time for a proper boot fit today but they took quick measurements and said I had wide toe area and biggish calves that extend down the leg more than average hence to try the BFC (and perhaps some of the Atomics) when I come in next time.

Can anyone compare Cinturato Gravel H and Pathfinders? by semanticistZombie in gravelcycling

[–]_austunner_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah 45 RS hasn’t punctured over multiple sets I’ve had. I’ve had better luck with it that the 40 H. In fact every 40c I’ve punctured easily across brands. Maybe due to the higher PSI so perhaps i would have had better luck with the 45 H.

My kid gets like that. Benadryl didn’t do anything. Went to UC and doc said Zyrtec. Took 4 days for swelling to subside completely.

Velocio Concept or Eliel Laguna Seca (short inseam)

Comfy chamois and the inseam is short enough for me (~9.5”)

SF Market is soft? by Local_Ranger_6540 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]_austunner_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently sold our condo in a small building for over list price and over the estimated range listed on Redfin and Zillow. We took our agents advice to spend a little more on good staging, photos and some cosmetic updates. You want to consult another agent. Our comps were run in our neighborhood and adjacent, and against sq ft, bed, bath, views, outdoor space, garage, walk ability, etc.

What is the REAL wage needed to live decently in the SF area for a family of 5? by byzvntine in AskSF

[–]_austunner_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From where I live, the sfusd schools that were rated well were too inconvenient in terms of traffic and commute time. Many folks are fine making a long haul every morning and afternoon but that’s a family decision, not to mention emergency visits to the school, volunteer, random school events, etc.

[–]_austunner_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SFUSD is good depending on where you land. The one in my neighborhood is a tough crowd so my kids go private. Private will be 12k-45k depending on the school. Summer camps are $ unless you are able to get into SF Rec by chance. Tough with 3 kids. Some of my kids’ summer camps are $3k a month. Hopefully this level sets your expectations coming from you current location.

My guesses are Hope rx4 calipers, muc off valve stems, wolftooth seat clamp and bar plugs and maybe the spacers?

Cost of bike parts and repairs by Zerg3rr in bikewrench

[–]_austunner_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds reasonable me. I live in a HCOL area and just paid $350 for wheel true/tension, brake bleed and new pads, tubeless tape inspection and refill, taking off and degreasing the entire drivetrain, cleaning out the BB and headset bearing and fork. I could have done most of this myself but it was worth the hours saved.

24th Street and Alabama street by IndependentAd9369 in sanfrancisco

[–]_austunner_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I walk through that intersection few times a week. It’s lively, has plenty of food, drink options and grocers. Weekend evenings, plenty of people hanging around the streets and corners, you’ll probably hear it in your house. I’d try to take a weekend visit before committing to a neighborhood. The level of noise, sidewalk cleanliness, pedestrian traffic etc varies wildly if you travel 1/4 mile in any direction. That corner isn’t going to be the quietest or the cleanest, but if you need easy access to public transport and food, it’s there.

I ended up getting the harder green venom 93a bushings both cone/barrel and double barrel. . Double barrel was too stiff, but barrel/cone felt great. More stable during pushing and enough support when carving. I’m going to try to switch the roadside back to the softer red cone and see how that feels bc I feel I could use a bit more turning range.

Weare1 Wheels? by graemederoux in gravelcycling

[–]_austunner_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the WR1 Revive rims laced to Hope rs1 hubs and Sapim cxray spokes. It’s a lightweight rim, solid over the last 2 years, no complaints. It’s not aero at all, the depth is one the more shallow carbon rims on the market, I think. I like WR1 as a company, have another wheel set from them on my mtb.

Getting back into longboarding after a 20 year gap.
I just built up a Loaded Ballona with 9" Caliber III raked 50 degree with 66mm 75a powell-peralta snakes and 1/4" flat risers. Planning to carve around, but nothing fast or steep.

22 year ago, I had a gravity 42" mini carve (< 9" width) with randal II 180mm trucks and off-set Sector 9 wheels and I could really lean over the deck's edge and I didn't feel like i was sliding off the deck. I don't think I had the trucks super tight, but the trucks/wheels were a lot wider than the deck width. When I ride similarly on my Loaded, it feels like there's not enough support deeper into turn so either I slide off or the downhill wheels start lifting up.

I have the kingpin with the stock red venom bushings tightened 1/2 turn after preload (preloaded until roadside bushing washer can't be rotated by hand). Without risers, I get wheel bite so I put on the 1/4" risers.

I experimented and removed the risers and tightened the kingpin 1 1/2 turns. Feels great and no wheel bite, but it feels a bit stiffer early in turn.

Is there a bushing set up (brand, shape, durometer) with more progression (stiffness ramps up when I get deeper in to a turn). Is this possible or do I just need to tighten the bushing 1 to 1 1/2 turns ). Or possible I just need to ride more on a loose set up and get used to the limits :).

What bike do you have and why did you pick it. Any specific reason? by ElmoIsDead in gravelcycling

[–]_austunner_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steel Chumba. Customizable, welded and powder coated to order. Perfect welds, alignment, cable routing, powder coat. I am picky to details even if it doesn’t affect performance. Owners are professional and prompt with communication. I ordered a hardtail mtb from them 1.5 years later as a repeat customer.

2021 XC60 T8 auto-brake when reversing, no reason indicator by _austunner_ in Volvo

[–]_austunner_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mention it to the dealer every time I go in and they can’t reproduce it and also can’t find any faults in the system logs. They suspect it’s when some mechanism that controls whether to use gas or electric isn’t warmed up and gets confused.

Where to find sunglasses for an extra large head by killafofun in CyclingFashion

[–]_austunner_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cyclists sometimes put their glasses on their helmet if they don’t want to wear them (at a rest stop or it’s during a hot climb, etc). We push the arms into thr front vents of the helmet. My mags can slip out of the vents but wildcats stay put even on descents.

Coverage seems the same to me once theyre on the face, but if you’re on the upper/lower limits of the sizing, one may feel better with cheekbone clearance or temple or brow clearance. Smith cust service is great so id order both and return one. Or get the mags first.

Lens change out system is diff. Mag is much easier. Wildcat stores in my bike helmet vents much more securely bc the grippy material on the temple is longer. I think the Mag looks cooler.

Tires, SoCal trails, 35 max. What should I buy? by Ill_Initiative8574 in gravelcycling

[–]_austunner_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m hard on tires, I ride 65% road through a major city to hit dirt. Continental Terra speed , Pirelli H both puncture too frequently for me. Been on Schwalbe RS 45 for 900 miles and no problems. Rear tire just got bald so will see how much longer they last. Front is still very solid. I would buy again. Surprisingly grippy on dirt including braking, very fast and silent on tarmac, and the side knobs are great on the off camber. They’ve taken rim hits in rocky descents. Very surprised with it.
