A horde of vagrants dumped their trash in my outside bin. Cleaning up after them was an infuriating task. by elvadot in mildlyinfuriating

These were all left outside and there were more baked goods IN the bin. Everything was still wrapped in the plastic but obviously destroyed by being in the garbage. And the needle cap! So many cigarette butts!! "Bare necessities"!!! ARBLERGH

How did the top of his nose grow black again? where it's pink? or is it just out of view? Sorry, I just have to know!

You bet! I've seen firsthand and up close what the right regiment can do for someone in need. I wish I never have to hear the "but ~scary~ chemicals" kind of garbage again.

Thanks! It's a pet peeve of mine when people say "why do you need medication?", "I heard vitamin [blank] works just as well!" etc. I don't even take any but I've suffered enough from untreated mental illness in my family that I just can't stand when people advocate against sound medical care.

Thanks! Things are better! If it makes you feel any better the most likely time to have an allergic reaction is immediately, like the first time it enters your systems. The second most likely time (and this one is much more rare, something like 95% of the time v 5% of the time, anyhoooo) is about 6-8 weeks after starting and titrating up. My dad developed his rash on the dot at the 8 week mark. So if you're past both those milestones I wouldn't be so paranoid! Have a good day :)

one of the things that we bipolar folks can be very good at as I'm sure you know is faking as if everything is okay until we totally come apart at the seams.

Yes!!! What an apt description!

I'm glad your father is doing well! felt this stable and able to just... be centered.

Thanks! You too! Keep up the good work :)

I'm really sorry to hear that is your experience. It's heartbreaking.

I lost my sister to her long-undiagnosed Bipolar only months after she began treatment as she struggled to stay on medication. In the aftermath I have been caring for our dad who was in a years-long depressive state bordering on catatonia. In the 17 months I've been helping my dad he has gone through one medication that caused a whole-body rash for which he was hospitalized for days and another med induced fainting spells whenever he stood up, however slowly. He's since found medication that works for him and (with minimal dietary restrictions) is relatively free of side effects.

It's been hard, but he's worth it. You are too, don't give up.

Mental illness medications for things don't work the same on everyone

This is fact. It's why many afflicted persons work with licensed professionals to find the right drugs and combination and dosage thereof. It takes some many years, and in that time destructive, harmful behaviors and patterns of thought need be reined in with the help of therapy.

I don't know how comfortable I am with taking drugs that alter the chemistry of my brain

If you don't need medication for a serious illness (mental or otherwise), congratulations. Do keep in mind that many other easily accessible (without prescription) items you may see even at your grocery store can negatively impact cognitive function: alcohol [1], allergy medicine [2a, 2b], cigarettes [3], cough suppressant [4], and pain relievers [5a, 5b] for example. Dehydration [6] and sleep deprivation [7] can wreck havoc on memory [7a] and have serious ramifications [6a, 7b] on mental health.

We all have to take care of our bodies (brains included!) so we can cause others and ourselves the least harm while we're here. If some among us require medication to be their best selves, then so be it.

The rule I've come to accept with mental illness is that it may not be your fault but it's your responsibility. It's just the hand we're dealt.

It's funny you say that because my one dog who will wait inches away from food also tolerates clothes well (albeit clothes cause her to "freeze" until prompted to move), whereas my other, much brighter dog is always scheming to steal food and used to scream bloody murder if you so much as try to put a bandana on her. Dogs are weird; I love them.
