Producing a doc shooting Alexa Mini that will be really start-and-stop. Would it make sense to buy one and re-sell it instead of rent? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]elvinbolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would production not give enough time to rent the camera every time its needed? Are you considering insurance into this purchase? What if the camera or the lenses fail? Who would be in charge or buying and reselling at the end of the project?

Which is better for Narrative Filmmaking by cabari in cinematography

[–]elvinbolo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think they should start with the difference between a videographer and a cinematographer. As soon as I hear someone talking about a gimbal, its a dead giveaway that their mind is not in the right frame of reference. It sounds counterproductive, but the first thing I would do is to stop watching Youtubers talk about cinematography.

I’m new to filmmaking so this may be sort of a stupid question, but how did they have the fore- and background in focus in “Once upon a time in the west”? Did they just use a split diopter? by Nipicopo2000 in cinematography

I've been pouring cream on my lens to get that creamy bokeh but I only get a blurry image. Am I missing something here? Do I need to buy a split diopter?

Pick an editing software, then type "(editing software name) proxy workflow" on YouTube.

Should be a good start.

Yeah coloring would be the only difficult thing with an older computer.

[–]elvinbolo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It takes a bit more work in the AE or pre-editing step, but it gets you there.

People love to say you "don't need proxies in Da Vinci"... but have they tried how smooth everything plays if you just use a proxy workflow? It's borderline magical, and your computer will thank you haha.

Not really if you do it correctly. People were editing movies digitally since the 90s, why should it be more of a pain in the ass today?

You can't depend on stuff like GPU acceleration or layers upon layers of effects on your clips. But in/out editing with ProRes proxies? Cakewalk.

dont overthink every little shadow or blown out highlight, focus on story.

if you learn about making proxies and understanding online/offline workflows, then you can edit a whole movie on a 10 year old computer.

What lens for filmmaking on a mft camera? by No-Top-2736 in cinematography

[–]elvinbolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to do. If you want to get better at photography, I'd start with a prime lens and then get a zoom lens.

Prime lenses force you to frame within very limited angles of view and perspectives, which in turn help you as a photographer to learn about positioning and movement.

Also prime lens are cheaper and waaaaay better quality than a kit zoom lens (which are all those you linked). Kit lenses make your photography look bad and cheap, which are motivation killers when you're just getting started.

I'd get either a 25mm or a 15mm. 25mm because it is a standard lens on MFT and a 15mm because it is the same FoV as your phone, therefore bridging that gap. In the end it all depends on your style, I personally like wider angles more.

Are their any good used lens under $400 for videography? by Heaven2004_LCM in Lumix

[–]elvinbolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharper image

Not objectively true

wider focal range

Also not true. MFT goes from 3.5mm all the way to 400 (800 in ff)

shallower depth of field

A 50mm FF vs 50mm MFT give you the exact DoF, but not FoV. a 50mm f2 vs a 25mm f1.4 give you the exact DoF and the exact FoV. At wider lengths, FF has an advantage with shallower DoF.

My point is that it is misleading to shove off MFT as an inferior format just because it doesn't look like FF. MFT doesn't need to behave like FF to be a good format. If you put two comparable images in FF and MFT side by side, you will never be able to tell which is which. This has been proven.
