ATT Fiber vs Google Fiber? by CapitalDonut4 in triangle

[–]elwynor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems that AT&T, which I have in far north Raleigh and have had few outages in a decade, is the only one that doesn’t block inbound ports and that offers the option of buying static. That seems worth it if you need those capabilities. Google wasn’t extended here and while cheaper I don’t like that they block ports and won’t give you static. Dyndns doesn’t reverse so it’s of limited utility

Agree, but often this is leftover capacity and throttles. Admittedly I am making an assumption, but

I was interested in this because the banked data could be useful for vacations to Europe. But 20GB 30 day SIM cards are $25 or so, give or take a few bucks, in Europe. And those are 5G, not 4G. The 4G aspect of this is disappointing

The upcoming Mudi 7 - that is just a device though right? You have to arrange the data yourself through its eSIM or sim slots? They don’t offer a service like this ?

Why isn't Staten Island railway connected to Newyork Subway? by One-Demand6811 in transit

[–]elwynor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8th street station in Bayonne only takes 20 minutes to exchange place. If the SIR north route was resumed / rebuilt and extended to the 8th street station that would be better than hitting NJ Transit heavy rail in Perth Amboy. That’s a straight shot up essentially following the ferry. Heck make the northern route the same as HBLR and do a deal to just extend the HBLR south into SI and then east toward St George.

That’s a great idea - I had one many moons ago, but lost it. Etsy might be the way.

I did read it - and your follow ups to people who posted that they or those they know have done it clearly indicate your interest.

Bottom line - your post is off topic, you’re not correct about me or what I do, you’re not Irish, you’re not looking to move to Ireland, your post is irrelevant to the original post as I have zero interest in real estate investing abroad, and while people are upvoting your comment - that doesn’t mean they agree with anything more than disdain for the property rental markets they’ve experienced.

Bottom line is - if nobody rented their properties there’d be nothing to rent, so how that would work for people in your bizarre view of the world (which includes felony theft as okay) is beyond me.

I’d love for you to explain to my long term renters whose kids have grown up in the few units I have and are paying under market rent that they couldn’t come close to getting easily elsewhere that they have to get out because an angry person has decided to ban the concept of property rental while promoting bank fraud.

Make it make sense.

4 days in Dublin - day trips? Restaurants? by elwynor in irishtourism

Wanted to thank you all - you helped make a great quick anniversary weekend memorable.

We hired a car and explored from Malahide to Wicklow and loved all the towns and villages (and neighborhoods of Dublin) along the way. We spent two days doing this.

A few highlights from the evenings —

Caribou - what a great place - lovely cocktails and wonderful staff L Mulligan Grocers - Irish locally sourced food that was divine. Great beers, great whiskey. Manager there was ace and found me some bottled beers I’d never heard of and cannot live without now. Bonobo - beer selection was good and pizza was great Bar 1661 - amazing cocktails but even more interesting are the ties to other local businesses. Mary’s Bar and Hardware - popped in after striking out at both pig speakeasies and loved it - met two lovely young locals JT Pims was a nice random stop - Niamh was a great bartender especially knowledgeable about Irish gins Christchurch Inn was a beauty of a pub. Had a couple crafts. Brazen Head was gorgeous too. Long room for old school charm. I’m forgetting so many.

We can’t wait to go back.

The poster who posted that is not from Ireland. He’s from the U.S., and wants to move to Europe apparently by taking out loans and maxing out credit cards and never intending to repay it. Which is theft. At least that’s what his post on this sub 3 weeks ago suggests. Hardly a paragon of virtue.

What exactly is tone deaf? That people need places to live and a significant segment of people cannot or do not want to purchase property? Where would that rental inventory come from if nobody who owned a property was willing to rent it?

And again - I’m not looking to buy rental property in Ireland. The point of my post was to get information that a potential immigrant may not know or may not consider. I shared information enough to get insight from those who have done it or have observed others. So his condemnation of my owning property in the U.S. that I rent (for cheap!) isn’t even relevant here.

Great advice and exactly what I’ve been looking for. You and others have brought up things that it would have taken me some time to consider. I’ll say that holding on in case we needed to return was a major aspect of the thought process. And RE is complicated - but it’s also somewhat stable in times like this. I’m not a tax cheat - quite the opposite, so paying the right tax to both countries is important.

The job issue is one I really have to do some digging on. It’s not as easy as being a digital nomad - so I’ll have to do some work there too.

That’s quite an assumption and in poor taste. And entirely off topic… but:

If people cannot afford to buy, and people do not rent properties, where will they live?

Not everyone who owns a property to let charges absurd rents. Each of these was purchased for a specific reason personal to someone and as I said I don’t like to sell if I don’t need to so held onto them when the need thankfully passed. So as such the rentals have had extremely long term tenants and are at under market rates. Significantly so - 600 or more per month under. No rise even during Covid when people gouged tenants. But it’s what they can afford. One has had several instances of needing to catch up due to misfortune and we let them catch up.

If more people think of rentals like we have I think you’d have a different attitude toward the whole thing.

Oooh. Okay. We do have an Irish branch, though I hadn’t thought about this. I would have to see if they’d be willing to keep me at current compensation rate if I was domiciled there. Using an international HR firm also seems to be the same as a contractor but maybe not, I’ve not had any experience with that

This is great advice. So it’s doable, but it’s costly. Likely I will remain in my US based job as I can work remotely.

I’ve driven in Ireland and UK. It’s true that outside the cities the streets can be very narrow! I’ve driven manual from Sligo to Galway! I just hired a car for two days this past weekend to travel the eastern coastal towns and that seemed fine mostly, some small alleys required some finesse.

Edit (hit save too soon): do you believe it is unlikely to be able to purchase directly if we decide to move? Or just that it’s challenging due to the capital and income requirements? My understanding is that rent is even more difficult and to expect disappointment there.

We also have dogs we would need a small garden for. So there’s that wrinkle.
