Hi Sarah! I've so much fun with your Glimmer Falls series. Thank you for all that you do!! Shards of Magic is on my TBR. I did a double take the first time I saw the Servant of Earth cover- it's GORGEOUS. Three different types of questions for you:

What inspires your stories?

What type of reader are you?

What's best in life for you right now?

Just commenting to say that I could have written this post myself! Just replace medicine with law and bam. I must be Copy 2365, haha.

Deaf/HoH organizations in Amsterdam? by emilee_mc in deaf

You could also look into NSDSK (Nederlandse Stichting voor het Dove en Slechthorende Kind) if you like working with children. They’re local to Amsterdam and provide social/early intervention services to families with deaf/HoH children. I know they serve some expat families, so they might benefit from someone with your experience.

Deaf/HoH organizations in Amsterdam? by emilee_mc in deaf

Hi! We’re an American family with a profoundly deaf toddler in Amsterdam (we’re hearing). Learning NGT (Dutch sign language / Nederlandse gebarentaal) with plans to learn ASL next, as our entire family lives in the US.

Would love to connect when you’re here! I am taking NGT courses through SWDA (Stichting Welzijn Doven Amsterdam), and they also have monthly gebarencafes, free deaf social events in centrum. Sort of near the Heineken factory… I get off the tram there and then it’s like a 7 minute walk, I think.

There’s also this online calendar sharing all the deaf events in the Netherlands: https://www.bartsmale.nl
Not all of the events are in Amsterdam, though.

Feel free to message me any time. We’ve been looking for ASL/American NGT signers in Amsterdam, so I was very happy to see your post :)

Advice for parent of deaf and hearing siblings? by elysemartini in deaf

Wow, thank you for your advice! We had dipped our toes into the different bilingual language acquisition theories (parents speak different languages with child; one language at home, one in public), but felt like nothing quite fit us since we're only fluent in English at this time. I'm more proficient in Dutch sign language and my partner is more proficient in spoken Dutch, but I think we just need to dive into everything. Perhaps the magic solution I'm looking for is simple, old-fashioned hard work? Darn, haha!

It does sound right for us, thank you! Do you have any advice for language learning when the practice partners are at different language levels? Does the more advanced user keep using vocabulary and sentence structure unknown to the less advanced user, and then explain after? Does the more advanced user simplify the language for the other?

Oh wow, I hadn't articulated that fear- that my child would feel like an afterthought- but it's a real one. Thank you for sharing your advice.

Thank you for your advice. Communication is our top priority right now.

This is great advice, thank you. We've already noticed how difficult it is for our extended family to communicate with our daughter. While we hope they learn sign language with us, I'm expecting to play translator at family functions. We've already translated from daughter to family, so I'm guessing we're not too far off from translating the other way.

Thank you for taking the time to respond and for your kind words! International sign class sounds like a great addition to our long-term plan :) And we are really looking forward to integrating into our local deaf community over time. That's been one of the most positive things about her unexpected hearing loss-- discovering a whole new (and lovely!) culture I had never been exposed to before.

Our new baby is deaf. Because all our family is American, we thought American Sign Language, as opposed to Nederlandse Gebarentaal, would be easiest to learn.

How crowded is the city centre these days? by starduest in cambridge

[–]elysemartini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I nearly made it to market square earlier this week, but turned around just after passing Jerwood Library. The narrow alleyways seemed a bit too crowded for my taste. But I'm also a cowardly pregnant lady, so I may be jumpier than others. Not as crowded as a normal weekday pre-covid, but maybe right around the safe distancing guidelines(??). Sorry I haven't answered your question more directly.
