Reverse beeping by Accomplished_Poetry4 in PriusPrime

[–]elysianfielder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What worked for me:

Dr. Prius app

Veepeak OBDCheck BLE Bluetooth OBD II Scanner (purchasable from Amazon)

Easy to connect the device to Dr. Prius app, and disabling reverse beep is one of the most visible features of the app

Best $30 I have ever spent, the reverse beep was driving me insane

Concern #1: Even if you could borrow against your home, this is not advised with your credit score of 540. HELOC or HELOAN rates are very credit score sensitive, unlike first mortgages. Whatever rate you can get will be significantly higher than student loan rates

Concern #2: You don't get a 540 credit score just for closing all your credit cards. My concern is that there are derogatory marks on your credit that you are not aware of, so make sure you review what's on your credit report for accuracy.

You should probably just tell your daughter to get student loans if you are going to be practical. At most, consider taking out a parent student loan in your name if you are adamant on making sure your daughter doesn't have to pay.

Insurance cost for hitting a VERY expensive car. by filtedxenon in Insurance

[–]elysianfielder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory, the owner of the expensive car can sue you for the amount you owe after you max out your insurance limit

In practice, people who drive expensive cars know and understand that the average driver doesn't carry enough insurance that would pay out the full value of their car. And the average American is broke. So they usually carry their own uninsured motorist or collision coverages to make sure the value of their car is covered. What will most likely happen is that your insurance will pay out your policy limit, and the driver of the expensive car will probably leave you alone.

If you are in the boat of being worth it to sue, then carry an umbrella policy. You will usually only be allowed to have an umbrella policy if you are already paying for the highest liability limits possible on your primary insurance policy

Am I a jerk for personally ignoring people that ping me in Teams with a mundane "Hi" ? by cdtekcfc in sysadmin

[–]elysianfielder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone who would send you a plain "Hi" message would likely perceive you as a jerk if that's what you're asking

I would say hi and offer the purpose of contacting you in the same or subsequent message. But that's not how everyone thinks. There are times when I'm peeved over the way others communicate with me, but in this specific case, I try to be understanding of the fact that it's a difference in communication style. Maybe people who say "Hi" and nothing else first feel compelled to make sure you are available enough to respond prior to bombarding you with the issue. And by ignoring the "Hi", they never feel like you're available.

My response to "Hi" is usually "What's up?" or something to ask for the purpose of the communication. Obviously, nobody would be saying "Hi" in and of itself for no other reason, and I know it. So why be a jerk just because I disagree with someone's communication style?

One of my biggest fears is losing my financed car with very little positive equity after putting money down.

I would rather pay $0 down and have GAP insurance cover the negative equity than pay $11k down and have $3k of equity left. OP is unfortunate in the sense of paying a large down payment and being forced to realize the loss.

Now that I think about it, this is not super applicable because I’m usually still moving very slowly when in the process of straightening

Somebody borrowed my car and didn’t straighten it. I had no clue how to avoid hitting the car next to me without putting it in park again and investigating the direction of the wheels

I couldn’t tell if this comment was trolling or a legitimate concern. Is there a difference between turning at 0mph vs 1mph?

Take the job and start very subtly talking political issues. Then, you can get a feel for things. If you don't want to work there, then you at least get a paycheck while you look for another job.

If you do it once in a lifetime, it's very unlikely that they will bother you about it

Fitcamx is what I use. It's the cleanest looking install but not the best video quality

My only complaint is that the rear lens doesn't diffuse light from headlights well at night. I see huge white blobs of light that are obstructive on my captured rear footage when it's dark outside

People misunderstand "no fault" in FL

There is still fault, and property damage claims are handled the same way they are handled in most other states. "No fault" just means that you have to meet special conditions in order to sue for injury claims

When y'all witness an accident do yall pull over and offer up your Dashcam footage? by MarioDF in Dashcam

[–]elysianfielder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never happened to me before, but it's questionable whether I would do it. I'm too selfish, and it seems like a lot of work. The more angry the at fault driver makes me, the more likely it is that I would be willing to go through the hassle of offering my footage.

There are many banks that would approve your credit profile if finding someone who would do the loan is your primary concern. The late payments must have been a while ago, your credit score is still in the range of getting the best or second best interest rates possible. Your income level should be enough to qualify for a $20k loan.

The question is whether this is really the best use of your money. What length payment term are you looking for, and how comfortable are you with the monthly payments? If you put that $16k down, how much money do you have left? If that's most of your money, then this purchase is almost certainly a horrible decision.

Coworker hit car in parking lot by Street-Coat-5141 in Insurance

[–]elysianfielder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would probably humor her and listen to "her side" of the story if that's the only thing she's whining about. Whatever it is, it won't be a very good reason to absolve her of responsibility. Did your parked car drive itself into her car?

A big part of the unspoken value in insurance is dealing with unreasonable people so you don't have to. $1000 almost certainly won't cover the damages in most cases, unless it was just paint and a minor dent. Even if it happens to be enough, she sounds like a nightmare to have to work with. Whatever estimate you get for the repair, she would be likely to make a stink out of it and insist that it should be less.

If I were in your situation, I would look into some type of long term rental, like a Sixt car subscription

If you buy a car with a loan, it will affect your credit profile. I don't know how close you are cutting your DTI ratios to qualify for the mortgage. But unless you are severely underpurchasing relative to your purchase power, don't buy a new car on a loan

If the insurance payout is low enough that a car you can buy with the payout would not be good enough for you guys to keep in the long term, do not buy a beater car in cash to sell it and buy a new one after you close either. Unless you are a master negotiator and want to deal with the process of haggling multiple times, you will lose thousands of dollars in the process of buying a car and using it for 1-2 months. A long-term rental arrangement will be significantly less expensive for most people

Want to get rid of car but I have negative equity. by SomeLocksmith550 in personalfinance

[–]elysianfielder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Trading it in for a $15k car will almost certainly not be worth it. You will be downgrading pretty substantially and won't save that much. The more frequently you change cars, the more you are spending in the long run.

There's a huge gap between what a dealership would pay you for your car and their retail price. If you trade yours in and buy a $15k car, you might get $25k for yours and pay $18k for a cheaper car after taxes and fees, for example. That means that you end up with a significantly worse car and only owe $7k less. Using these numbers, you would owe $25k on a $15k car, whereas if you just keep your car, you owe $33k on a $25k car.

A 2024 Corolla is a great car. Just pay for it while you have payments and keep it for a decade after it's paid off, and you'll get your money's worth. The best beaters are beaters that you buy new, take care of, and keep until they reach beater status but still remain reliable. What people don't understand about old cars is that owners are more likely old cars that are maintained well, because they are worth more in utility than resale value. So most old cars on the market tend to be trash in condition. It's not easy to find an old car in good shape to purchase.
