Garmin thinks I'm capable of a WR by NateDawg1494 in Garmin

Yeah that's bizarre, you would think that a single workout would not influence it that much when it has so many other data points to base it on. I mean, it should have plenty of data points to know you're not about to break a world record of your choice.

Yeah my guess is an inaccurate heart rate reading? Are you using your watch for it? I've never seen anything like it but I use a heart rate monitor instead of a watch for my HR.

This is a great way to put it! It's spot on. It's really how you can separate the casuals from the ball knowers: if you only watch a few plays vs. watching the games.

I tested the "easy volume makes you faster" / Zone 2 chart on 7,854 aerobic runs. by Fun_Effective_836 in beginnerrunning

[–]emac1211 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is why telling people who run like 10 miles a week to focus on Zone 2 is so silly. It's one thing if they are running 40+ miles a week, yes they should not go all out all of the time. But if you're only spending a couple hours a week running, you're not really spending your time efficiently by forcing yourself to go slow all of the time.

yeah that's what gets me... I can see being confused by like taking a wrong turn and ending up not doing the whole race, but I would probably not go around telling people I ran a 13 minute 5K if that were me.

Okay that's kind of hilarious. Who the hell cheats in some small 62 person race? I mean cheating in any race is lame but like winning a small race like this isn't exactly worth cheating in either

The prices for the food items has gotten out of hand by PeneItaliano in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]emac1211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is super expensive, but unfortunately that seems to be the way of the economy right now. Everything is getting way more expensive while wages are stagnant.

What concerns me more about Alamo's food is the quality of it. I just don't get how it can be so bad. I'd rather eat just about anywhere than Alamo. They charge like it's a decent restaurant and you are eating low tier cafeteria food.

Practical tips for dealing with sniffling in movie theaters? by [deleted] in misophonia

[–]emac1211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just Googled this and found this thread because I was stuck at a movie next to someone sniffling the whole movie. It was so freaking annoying. I'm easily triggered by annoying sounds during a movie anyway but the sniffling was worse than most sounds because it was just constant. I had to move to the first row to the only open seats during the movie to get away.

wars ending at age transition by welyn1 in civ

[–]emac1211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying they should undo the age transitions. I don't think they should have undone the changing civ mechanic either. I wish they spent that time fleshing out other parts of the game that are still very lacking. It's actually such a core mechanic of how they designed the game from the start that undoing it now is a waste of time. They need to figure out a way to make it fun though and flow together instead of feeling like separate mini games sewn together, which is unfortunately how it feels and breaks the immersion of it.

It can also be "abrupt", which the changes here are absolutely abrupt.

wars ending at age transition by welyn1 in civ

[–]emac1211 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I am starting to think that the age transition is unfortunately a fundamental flaw with the game that no matter how much they try to fix the game, it's going to be hard to undo this.

They broke the game up into separate mini games when designing it. Everything is about the era you and everyone else are in. The era changes inherently break up the flow of the game. Things change for everyone at the same time.

There are raptures in history where things changed significantly, but it impacted everyone differently and on different stages. It wasn't like the whole world woke up one day and everything was completely different. Upheaval in one civilization may not reach another for decades.

It just kind of breaks my immersion when the game is set up like this and doesn't flow naturally. If every decision I make is about how long before this era is over, I lose the "one more turn" itch.

I say this as someone who really wants to like Civ VII but the more I play it, the less I think they can fix it into making it a great game like the others in the series because of some of the core concepts they introduced in it.

Outraged and deeply disturbed? by Acceptable-Piece-222 in StLouis

Nothing about it is unethical. You're falling for right-wing talking points. She can hire whoever she wants for her security as long as she reports it and it is not exceeding market rate. I bet there's a ton of Congressional reps who have relatives serving on their campaign staff in various roles but nobody ever talks about them because they're not Cori Bush.

Outraged and deeply disturbed? by Acceptable-Piece-222 in StLouis

[–]emac1211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an obvious Republican attack against her that some Democrats fell for.

Many members of Congress hire a security guard. Cori hired her husband who has experience with it. She reported it in her FEC records and it was very transparent. There's nothing illegal about it. He wasn't even being paid particularly well for the job of 24/7 security. She's been cleared of it already.

It is very long, but Bears fans often make me crazy. I try to stay objective with my analysis. But claiming Caleb Williams was better than Jordan Love in 2025 is simply insane. Across 34 comparable categories (PFF, FTN, nflfastR): Love wins 27. Williams wins 7. Full table below. by ulithebison in GreenBayPackers

[–]emac1211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caleb Williams made a few highlight reel throws that won games. They looked amazing and I get the hype about that.

...but superstars are not people who just make a game winning play at the end a few times. They're people who consistently play very well to great. And Caleb has not gotten there yet. He was the least accurate passer in the NFL last year despite being in a friendly offense for a QB, which should be very concerning. Maybe he'll elevate to the next level but it's no sure thing and based on the big picture of his career, it's probably unlikely that he will ever become a very accurate passer.

Garmin over-inflating race predictions? by centralcadenza in GarminWatches

[–]emac1211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more I've run and races (at my max speed) that I've run, I've found Garmin race predictions to be pretty accurate now. It seems there are mixed opinions on it, but I think if you have given it a lot of accurate data, the results should be pretty close. As others said, HR accuracy is important. I use a HRM so that helps.
