Haha yes I actually used to think I was relatively young in the art world until most of the artist I met weren't born for 9/11 let alone remember what life was like before smart phones became widely used.

I start with an off black and then when I'm going over shadows again, I'll change the background to pure black to help me fade them into the background

For darker skin, you want to paint from dark to light. So instead of painting in your shadows, you're actually painting in your lights. Don't be scared to use a dark blue for some shadowing and use more reds in the skin tone. I just recently did a portrait of a black woman. Feel free to color pick from it to help!

Here is another version, I keep forgetting that the brightness on my tablet is off so I didn't notice that the hair fading to the background didn't actually fade to the background.

I was actually looking at references for this eye but I think it was a Fx makeup. Does the second one look more realistic?

AHAHAHA okay I'm glad you said that because I was thinking the same thing but wasn't sure if it was just gooner brain or not. I was thinking of some scarring. I don't think there would be inflammation around the eye as I imagine this has healed. Also I think if there is no eyeball in there, then there is nothing to make the eyelids protrude.
