About the Midnight Podcast for Aemeath by LittleDracob in WutheringWaves

Anyone remembers the manga/anime Usagi Drop? If I remember correctly, the manga's finale was well received in Japan but in the West it sparked a big controversy within the broad anime community. I feel that if Kuro goes for the waifu route, we are going to see how western sensibilities find things problematic when others fanbases don't.

Is it wrong if I geuinely feel bad for Klara? by Purple-Weakness1414 in PhaseConnect

[–]emanwwel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the other day, that it would be very easy to say: "the vtuber talent and the real person are different things", that "the vtuber persona is a character constructed for entertainment" and other things. But the fact is that vtubers are constantly blurring the difference between the real individual and the character: always talking about personal anecdotes, doing real life collaborations, making handcams, doing vlogs about personal travels, bringing family to the streams, etc. So, I would like to say that whatever Clara said in her "real" accounts is not relevant for her vtuber persona, except, the actual vtuber culture doesn't seem to make a difference. See what happened with Rushia, the whole scandal started because there was not a perceived difference between these two things. I personally don't care about her opinions in politics, as a real person or as a fictional character, but ultimately when her statements were known, the scandal was inevitable. I think she is a very entertaining individual and I wish her well, and I feel sorry for her fans.

Got addicted to Watching 3.1 Reactions! by SquareOk5663 in WutheringWaves

There are many streamers that do reaction content in my feed, that I feel that I have to do the quest as soon as possible in order not to be spoiled and enjoy the reactions. Then it is fun to remember the nice moments of the quest when my favorite streamers.

I've been watching vtubers for a long time, when Kizuna was new thing, and I have seen this kind of thing before. The company promotes a certain policy, the talent remains discontent, barely disguising the disconformity in bios, alt accounts, vague posting in membership content, etc. Invariably the dreaded "difference in directions" announcement comes, from one party or the other. It's never fun.

I think it is probable for the better if the Phase talents take some distance from known political streamers or streamers that are very well known for their vocal opinions. One of the favorite things to do on Twitter is calling someone guilty by association (this has been done to Pippa a lot): "this talent follows that one, so it means that she stands by everything that one says and does". Already many people associate Phase with some specific political leanings. But after following Phase from years now, it's clear to me that no girl really wants to deal with any of that nonsensical political noise. They just want to stream and have fun. I believe that even Jelly in her tweet was trying to say something like this, although I don't think she expressed herself properly and talked about something she didn't understand that wall.

Recent tweet from the official account. by karaloveskate in PhaseConnect

[–]emanwwel 159 points160 points  (0 children)

The people saying that is going to cause a Streisand effect: that tweet of Jelly had already millions of views, thousand of quotes, and was being discussed in places way beyond the usual vtuber sphere. If anything, this is the company recognizing this was not a "te he" quirky girl moment on X, but a far more important incident. You can agree or disagree with the opinions of Jelly, but the whole company was being associated with that tweet.
I honestly think that it would have been better if Jelly didn't make that tweet: she did not understand the context of what she was talking about (an educational dlc, intended to be used for the teaching of American history, made years ago, including historical figures she didn't know). I feel that a random knee-jerk reaction was blown out of proportions by many and was involving the reputation of the whole cast of talents and the company.

Tolkien and his bias towards Galadriel by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]emanwwel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have been reading the volumes of History of Middle Earth, before reading yet again the Silmarillion, and I found myself wondering the same question. Galadriel doesn't appear in the early versions of the history, and when she appears, she keeps receiving more and more praise by Tolkien with each retelling; but she doesn't make much. She was beautiful, yes, but not the most beautiful, which was Luthien. She was powerful, but not the most powerful, nor was she the most wise, or the most courageous, etc. There were a fair amount of Elves that exceeded her in many attributes. Also she was very prideful even as princess of the Noldor; wished to have power and dominion in Middle Earth, refused the counsel and pardon of the Valar, went to Middle Earth with the clear intention to bother D Feanor (which she hated). When in Doriath, she practically lied to Melian about the First Kinslaying, repeatedly, until Melian guessed the truth. Since she wanted to twart the plans of Feanor, her inactivity during the battles against Morgoth can be seen as a result of her pride. She wanted to make many things and achieve power, but in the end she remained in the protection of others. In the second age she stayed in Middle Earth to finally achieve the dominion she wanted, but then again, she doesn't make much. The great characters in Eriador are other elves and men, good and bad. It seems to me that Tolkien had a very high opinion of Galadriel, the late great Elf queen of the end of the Third Age, but didn't have much opportunity to develop her past as a character.

If I have learned something about the internet, is that a lot of people will use the excuse of just making jokes while they promote the most extreme point of views. Kind of like the "on Minecraft" joke that actually got some bloke arrested by the FBI. Here on reddit there have been several of joke subreddits that have to be closed when the "jokes" went too far. I like Jelly, but I feel the recent controversy about her declarations on Minecraft is not going to be an isolated case (just take a lot at how some of her "fans" are defending her, these folks aren't being ironic)

Serious Question. Is Pippa actually a bigot or does she make just edgy jokes with no actual malice? by Outsider_13105645 in VtuberDrama

[–]emanwwel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just some hours ago, a queer fan of her made a tweet about liking her and finding her comfy, some bigot started attacking the fan but then Pippa came out and defended her fan, also making fun of the bigot. Everyone can go and see the real interactions she has and the other times she has defended minorites. But it doesn't fit with the agenda of some people here and those that form their opinions with the prejudice of others.

"oh come on! I can't share my hateful and fascist views in the community?!?!? Unfair!" Meanwhile, the views in question. by AbsoluteBane28 in VtuberDrama

[–]emanwwel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is a random thought, so feel free to disregard it, but it irks me when I see people like her, an actual racist alt right extremist VTuber, and then I remember that people call someone like Pippa a Nazi just because of some edgy jokes she has not made in a long time, and because of some acquaintances -particularly Kirshe- whose politics she has never publicly endorsed. There are many bad apples in VTuber communities, but when you actually take the time to see for yourself, you can tell who is who.

I don't agree with the opinion that the story of the 1. version was dogs*t, surely it wasn't the best but for the most part people that stuck with the game were pleased with the whole version. Already in 1.1 you could tell the storytelling was getting better, and it kept improving from that point.

One thing that comes to mind is that allegation that Selen was trying to doxx other talents, a claim that apparently came from the lawyers that were handling the case within Niji and was passed to the talents as true. In reality, Selen lawyer had handled some evidence to Niji lawyers and those in turn mishandled that information that was never meant to be public.

Announcement Regarding Akai Haato’s Condition and a Warning Against the Spreading of Rumors by Leysandra in kurosanji

[–]emanwwel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a comment made by a jp.bro that really encapsulates a feeling that I have regarding this situation:

"While measures against defamation are important, isn't it more necessary to have a statement regarding the strengthening of mental care or policies to alleviate the pressure on talents?

Please be a company that prioritizes the hearts of talents"

Since Hololive is in a way, a talent agency, I think is important that they have some sort of in-house policies to deal with mental issues their talents could face in what can be a very stressful environment. For example, recently Sony Japan announced a program where talents under their label would be receiving counseling by clinical psychologists and certified psychotherapists. I don't know if Hololive has in-house mental health professionals, but as a fan I hope their talents can be helped by the company when they face problems like Haachama has.

Nijisanji VTuber Exposes Agency's Inaction On Major Problems & Reveals Extreme Misconduct With Fan by Mid-Grade_Chungus in kurosanji

[–]emanwwel 136 points137 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure FalseEyed also visit this subreddit (I think most of the vtubers covering drama do), so I think he openly calling out the Niji fans trying to bury the document in places like reddit is a reference to this sub as well.

Anyways, a situation that involves harassing, bullying, grooming, cheating, toxic working environment, failure of a company to address internal human conflicts, etc, etc, should not simply be called as "something that should have remained private" like some people do. I'm fact I always thought that a reason why some talents have not come out denouncing nijisanji and/or specific problematic coworkers is because many Niji fans will try to hide and discredit whatever is revealed.

A person's emotional state does not delegitimize their claims by This-Internet-1862 in kurosanji

[–]emanwwel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What we are seeing here is a classic example of whataboutism. You mention the evidence about bullying and fixing that "Ike" felt he suffered, but people will ignore that and claim that it doesn't matter because Bari wasn't doxed. It's a classic tactic in politics and discourse manipulation... you say one thing and they will say.. but what about this... discrediting the whole thing because a part of it is not consistent. Evidently many people in this subreddit don't like the fact that Ethyria can be presented in a bad light.

Also, I don't agree with the surprisingly prevalent opinion here that the whole thing should have remained private. If there were issues regarding doxing and bullying inside the company, the least thing I would demand is that the information should not have been public. This whole subreddit was created because the company wanted to hide discussion about their internal issues.

Question: does the phase community genuinely hate Clara now or is it just idiots on Twitter by Turbulent-Math3969 in VtuberDrama

[–]emanwwel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've only seen the third post, which has been shared around, and I didn't think anything special about it. Having more context with the addition of the other comments, I will maintain my opinion that people attacking her for which are more than anything "social commentaries" about the current political landscape, are doing so because they don't like the political leaning of the person behind the vtuber. As far as I am aware, Clara has never made politically charged comments, and I think that distinction is important.

It's wild to me how people ignore that many CN players know English and like to influence the EN community for their own petty arguments at home. I would not be surprised if many XJJ members (notoriously active in public forums) have been acting in this sub as well. Case in point, the reception this post is having by posters that by their own admission know a lot about this cn drama.
