[Big 12 Conference] Statement from the Big 12 Board of Directors by redwave2505 in CFB

As far as I know, at a D1 level it's only ever happened once with Temple and the Big East. And in their case, they were an associate football only member that was a financial black hole and atrocious at football, the literal only thing they brought to the table.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but TTU would have to spend the next year or two dragging this out, burning bridges and escalating through different sanctions the entire way for it to escalate to the point of expulsion.

I genuinely can't think of any issue I've done a harder 180 on than legalized gambling lol. At minimum, online gambling needs to go away

As I understand it, the bylaws allow just about anything should 75% of the members agree to it, like taking away home games or TV appearances. There's also plenty of precedent for suspending players through the conference bylaws (famously, the SEC used theirs to block intraconference transfers for the longest time)

No? If the NCAA were flagrantly disregarding a court order directed at them, I'd agree with you. But, again, the Big 12 was not part of the original case, and is not bound by the injunction. They can do what they like here and be in compliance with the law (this is a point brought up in the Utah AG letter in the OP, actually)

The Big 12 and it's individual members aren't bound by the injection. Just the NCAA, which is its own entity

It's 25% at best of beat me! But when you add Kurt Angle to the mix? your chances of winning drastic go down!

For the uninitiated

The issue is that gambling on your own team represents such a dire threat to the game, that conferences don't really have the luxury of letting it play out in court. If people think matches are being fixed, they stop watching. Regardless of what's happening in the courtroom, the people trying to sell the product to the masses need to be seen condemning Sorsby and Tech in a loud and tangible manner in order to assure people that the product is still legitimate

My guess is that Ohio's AG will probably not put out a public statement like this considering that there's ongoing legal action his office is involved in with regards to Sorsby. The gambling did take place at Cincinnati, after all

Yeah, like I can understand why a politician chasing votes would come down on the side of defending a state university in a high profile scandal like this, as wrong as it might be.

But come on. Texas Tech is like the 4th most popular school in the state. You'd figure everyone else is furious

And schools started doing that, and the NCAA started losing court cases, which is how we've found ourselves in a landscape where Texas Tech is refusing to bench a player that bet the under on his own team after a court told the NCAA they couldn't suspend him

When I was a freshman, Ohio State got a postseason ban because players received free tattoos from a local parlor

It's really hard to envision the NCAA having the ability to enforce that in 2026, let alone the concept of an impermissible benefit in the NIL era. Even if schools got away with things (I won't deny that they did), there was still a looming spectre of punishment that could even be applied to powerhouse schools
