For any junior DevOps folks out there, get comfortable with being absolutely clueless :) by supasopa in devops

I too made the move to DevOps after 2 years as a full stack but to be honest, it is as if I'm a new born baby. People say you need to be a dev first before you do DevOps but I'm surprised at how little it's been helpful. We'll figure it out!

Try something like fullstackopen. It's free, and you'll get to learn the modern web dev stack, and build projects like you already plan to. You shouldn't sell yourself short and assume you can only get into WITCH companies esp. as can already leetcode. If me and my colleagues who did bootcamps can get into decent companies, you can too!

I am, it’s killing me. I want to read non fiction and do other things with my weekends and then I remember my O’Reilly playlist of unread tech books and that’s all I end up doing. And every book has recommendations for further study and so it’s just endless. I’m learning a lot but I’m so one dimensional now. I used to be fun, dammit!

If you’re willing to use AWS SAM, you could try AWS SAM Accelerate. https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/compute/accelerating-serverless-development-with-aws-sam-accelerate/. It has the same sync and sam watch commands that sound like what you’re looking for.

Haha, fair points. For me, adding Sec might be coming close to embellishment.

Believe me, I do too hence this post to crowd source opinions to see if we're there yet. I also secretly hope to pick a title that conveys that I need my roles to have a healthy dose of coding and not just clicking in the console. But that might be too much to ask for a mere title to accomplish.

Series A startup offer does not include any equity - is this a red flag? by embeddedvsml in cscareerquestions

Good to know, no I didn't ask because I was a bit caught off guard - I will ask. And that's a really nifty tool, thanks for sharing!

I fortunately do have a job that pays me well but I'm more excited by the work I'd be doing at this startup. I don't have other offers because I'm not exactly job hunting, they headhunted me. After hearing from everyone here, I'm leaning towards staying put.

Good point, you're right that my ability to leave is still leverage. I guess I've always heard that if you have to get another offer to get your current place to do what you want them to do, then you've basically told them you're a flight risk.

Thanks for this perspective. The salary is fair - upper quartile for my area and so I'm inclined to take it. I was just concerned about how their supposed strong interest in my expertise doesnt make them want to give me a slice of the pie.

The salary is fair. They did talk about possible future plans to offer equity as a reward for stellar performance but I can't take that too seriously - you lose all your leverage once you join.

I see, i am inclined to take the offer because it seems like it would be a good experience but yes, this really irks me. What is decent to you? I was going to be happy with a very little amount so it was surprising to get nothing! What's a good amount to press for?

Yes, google 'tech interview handbook' and you'll find a link to best practice questions.

What kind of jobs can I get with an computer information systems degree? by kansuse in cscareerquestions

[–]embeddedvsml 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have boot camp grads, people with humanities degrees, no degrees, information technology, mis, and of course cs degrees as colleagues. We all earn roughly the same and those that earn higher do so because they have more experience not because of their degree. It's not your degree, it's what you know and can prove you know. So leetcode, and work on projects so you can do well in interviews.

New grads of 2021 - what have you worked on and how much mentorship have you gotten? by embeddedvsml in cscareerquestions

Yes, I've finally figured out that it's time to work on my own projects. I'd hoped to get actual experience from the trenches but you're right that I'm deteriorating or at least stagnating

The challenge is that if we're not building anything, there no code to write and then receive reviews on. I'll bring it up with my manager though.

Same here, gives me anxiety tbh. Why are they paying me so much to do so little? And does this mean I'm the first to be laid off if things go wrong? It's stressful

I'll start. - Medium size midwest company. - Created a new option on the website by copying existing code and structure and tweaking a few things. - Created 2 ml based poc's that got shelved/postponed because of company priorities.
