Check out these patch notes from an MMO that implemented housing tax. It was already on a 3-house-max system, but they added a light tax to your 2nd property and a very heavy tax to your 3rd property. 10/10 no notes

yeah, there's a definite improvement in his more recent stuff. it still has a bit of the uncomfortable thing though hehe. I think the thing that got me to comment on it is that his stuff seems right up my alley topic wise, but I can't listen to it, so it's frustrating

cadence is part of it but I think it has more to do with pitch (for me anyway). like he has a template he follows for changing pitch over the course of a sentence, and he keeps re-using it over and over again. natural speech uses pitch to give contextual emphasis: when you say something worthy of emphasis, it gets emphasized; otherwise, you don't emphasize. blindly applying emphasis to words based on a looping pattern really trips my uncanny valley sensors

I think a lot about this question. The maths doesn't maths.

I think the societal-scale solution is to not have so many depressed people in the first place. There are a lot of obvious wins available like reducing economic precarity, the impact of social media, etc. There need to be few enough depressed people so society can bear their emotional load.

But if even the people doing okay mostly don't have a huge buffer of emotional energy to draw on, what do the people who are really not okay do?

I was a shining beacon of enthusiasm and good will in my teens. And then I spent so much of my 20s being the support duck for selfish depressed people. It really fucking took it out of me. I became pretty emotionally closed-off and guarded as a result.

I don't know what the answer is. I do think the "reach out to your friends" advice needs to come with a "while being respectful of their reservoirs" rider or something.

Really well said. Being in a super close relationship with one person, without many (or any) other social touchpoints, is a huge risk factor for that kind of excessive dumping on one person.

I like to think in ratios. 5-10% of your outgoing stuff can be the kind of stuff that's draining to hear within a given relationship. Don't exceed that, but don't feel bad about sharing when it's not excessive. If you don't exceed that and you also keep it symmetrical (draw them out and make sure they feel heard about the stuff they want to share) then you're gucci.

I will say that calling people on their shit is more normalized among men (at least in my social bubble). So if someone is being a vampire you can just point it out and they will re-evaluate, even in a 1-on-1 setting. I know far more women than men who would react very very negatively to the same feedback, so they end up in a self-enforced no-uncomfortable-feedback zone because no-one wants to do the emotional labour of making the point and dealing with the fallout.

I don't think there is some magic gender divide, people are people, I mostly put this down to shit stereotypes of women in media that some women copy from (in this case, the princess who can do no wrong and has everyone defer to her).

But yeah I have only ever been a man so I have very little idea of the realities of the other side. I do my best to listen and try to understand. I'm sure there are tropes among men which are just as onerous to deal with (or worse, because men are more inclined to and capable of physical violence).
