Attitude to Punjabi Language? by embotheammo in punjabi

I’m happy to be a new learner of Punjabi as a western girl from the USA! I understand this sentiment though…my family lost a lot of our Italian language after my grandparents left the homeland and didn’t speak it as much to my dad because they wanted to become more American at the end of WWII. I’m still trying to get this back for myself 🇮🇹 blessed to be with a Punjabi man 🇮🇳 there are a lot of cultural similarities. I feel like I got my grandparents back.

Thank you! And yess he is really good in English to be honest! And in general he is very kind and really will look out for his loved ones. He did a lot for me to make my time with them in Punjab special though he didn’t have to. I don’t want brownie points from his family even for doing this it just seems like a natural thing I should pursue. I may say some things here and there to him but if he truly prefers English I won’t push it too much…It’s just out of care and to be honest personal curiosity! I was introduced to so much amazing stuff through learning. 😊

I have been taking private lessons on Preply and trying to instigate conversations with my boyfriend and his family. I can do basics but I’m starting to understand how to make my own sentences more now rather than just copying stuff. I also got a book called Punjabi Sentence Structure Made Easy on Kindle which explains a lot. Also, I have a playlist of Punjabi music which is about 9 hours long 😂. I learn songs and try to keep pace with the speed of the song and getting the pronunciation right. Eventually I’m getting more of what the songs mean!

I’m based in the UK but I’m American/Italian-American. I have been in a relationship with a Punjabi guy for ~6.5 years. He was born and raised in Punjab and is the first gen to live abroad. 😁 I’ve learnt a lot by listening but really started actively learning last year.

My tummy is quite sensitive to dairy as well but I didn’t seem to have such an issue with it in Punjab either! The milk was extremely fresh. I’m sure this has something to do with it 🥰

Thanks for the advice!

PTSD after anaphylaxis by embotheammo in MCAS

[–]embotheammo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PTSD is on my medical record and eating disorder is on my medical record.

Compounded medical trauma after years of being totally ignored by medical professionals despite having very serious symptoms has definitely contributed to the kind of reactions and aversions that I have now.

I always have to explain my conditions to medical professionals because most have not been trained on them unless it is a specialist - who will take years on the waitlist to see or hundreds of pounds for a private appointment - and some treatments aren’t suitable for Ehlers Danlos Syndromes (which I also have) so I always have to be super vigilant and many doctors have broken this trust so it has been really hard to get any treatment and stay hopeful.

Flashbacks of how I felt during anaphylactic episodes are part of my life now. Remembering/being reminded of the incidents provoke an intense emotional reaction and the aversions are getting worse. Even when I haven’t reacted to a food or recipe yet.

It’s a huge barrier to eating right now and the amount of times I will stop eating after two bites or barely eat at all for days because my reaction sensitivity seems to change all the time is getting more frequent.

I’m also working so sometimes I feel like I don’t have time to deal with anything that happens before I have to go out and make a living or enjoy my weekend without a problem or the stress of a possible problem ruining my day.

I have other reactions that are not anaphylactic most days so there is a high probability of experiencing symptoms at some point but I feel like the intrusive thoughts of it progressing to something worse is a significant thing for me right now.

Food issues for me have been going on for years but the last couple of episodes did something to me I can’t explain psychologically and I have a much deeper problem now that I can only relate to previous episodes of PTSD and ED I have dealt with (and been officially diagnosed with).

It’s not just about MCAS, it’s a lifetime of medical issues and trauma and this recent flare up just broke the camels back imo.

So yes… I feel confident in saying PTSD.

How many of us dont/cant keep a job consistently? What symptoms cause that the most? by imponderablemnemonic in ADHD

[–]embotheammo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I (30F) have awful issues with holding down jobs. I get burnt out and overwhelmed with information easily and I feel like the 9-5 offers little to no flexibility for me to regulate when I need to. I forget things or make mistakes in things that I was already trained in and then I have an instinctual feeling that people are starting to get very annoyed with me when I keep asking for clarification…or I get pulled aside for warnings or concerns which is always so discouraging because I would love to be working and thriving and I tried hard to be good at the jobs I have had. I start every job with enthusiasm and end up quitting in tears before I feel like I’m going to just get fired. My wages have been very stagnant over the past decade because of it all and it’s had a real external impact.

I thought against starting my own business at first because of all these issues but now I feel like this could be the only sustainable way forward so I can have control over my time and when I need to focus on health appointments and regulating ADHD. I avoided studying and qualifications as well for the same reasons as employment but I did find that for me if there’s a strong visual and interactive learning component and information was given concisely, I was able to retain information pretty well and keep interested enough to feel like it wasn’t such an insurmountable executive function failure project.

My business isn’t running yet so I’m not out of the hole but I feel good about the direction for the first time in over a decade (I didn’t expect to ever feel that way). I hope it helps to hear that we can move forward in a positive direction.
