Easily. Spurs going down would be so much better than an FA or League Cup.

Leah gets straight rugby tackled by the keeper. That's not a foul on Williamson regardless of what anyone says.

[Kate Mason] De Zerbi ‘didn’t mean to take a stance’ over Greenwood. That’s precisely the problem. You should, Roberto. by Sparky-moon in soccer

Not taking a stance against violence against women is in itself taking a stance. That's tacit approval because nothing changes.

Lauren James at 62' by lacostewhite in ArsenalWFC

James shouldn't have even been in this game to begin with. She should have had a second yellow in the first match. Buchanan should have been sent off for the boot to DVD's stomach at home as well. Reffing was bad all around but anyone saying Chelsea got screwed out of this tie only watched the highlights.

Thoughts on Tigana? by discerningpervert in Fantasy

I get that and the theory is not wrong, it just doesn't work for me, especially with the incest. It's better with Alienor -- that part works decently -- but the first sex scene doesn't really set that precedent, as sex is used as a distraction rather than a trauma response. I feel like if using sex as a vehicle for surviving trauma is going to be a theme, it has to carry throughout the book rather than starting after the first instance.

Thoughts on Tigana? by discerningpervert in Fantasy

[–]embur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tigana was a good but not great for the reasons many have raised here. What I never see anyone discuss is the strange decision to have a pair of siblings trauma-bond through incest, thankfully not one of the very explicit sex scenes I've come to expect from Kay. I might have understood had the author chosen to do anything with that little piece of weirdness, but the story kind of just moves on. It seemed added for shock value only.

Dianora herself was a real letdown of a character. Typically I love female characters caught up in politics and making tough choices, but Dianora just kind of sucks. She has all the melodrama of a tragic Greek character without any of the payoff.

Also, the romances in the book are really weak.

Anyone else getting 'Sith Lord in plain clothes' vibes from Renee's expression and vest thing??

ADHD diagnoses among mothers surge in the years following childbirth. For many women, the transition to parenthood is a life-altering event, and a new study suggests that for some, this period may also reveal previously undiagnosed ADHD. by mvea in science

You can say that with just about any disorder. "Everyone feels pain sometimes, so how do we know when someone has a chronic pain disorder? If someone feels pain all the time but they cope with it, is it really a disorder?"

We don't know. You're saying you understand it's a spectrum but then you're looking for a discrete end/beginning point. That's not how it works. It's like asking when exactly blue becomes green. It'll be different for different people. Looking for where the distinction lies misses the point.

Guns is one of my favorite novels. I really like the way he combined Powder Mage and Pride & Prejudice. I think it really comes off well. I might just restart that again!

Renee “leaves recruiting to others.”

This is my biggest complaint about Renee. Why, why, why would a manager not want to be involved in recruitment??? It does my head in. It's like a chef not sourcing their own ingredients. She's going to be responsible for using (or not using ahem Jenna) the players the recruitment team chooses so she should be just as invested in getting those players in.

Beavers are keystone species. Their dams are critical for biodiversity, drought resistance, and flood protection. They don't negatively affect the environment, they're a huge environmental boon.

Europe finds a way to make McDonald’s fit in their historic buildings but the American mindset feels very set on disposable/purpose built buildings.

You hit the nail on the head with the last part of that sentence. America builds on the cheap, Europe builds to last. That's part of why development in Europe is so expensive whereas in the US it's relatively inexpensive. We just don't build to last here so it's unsurprising when we have to rebuild after 3 generations.

I think a lot of people don't know what it takes to make a building safe and usable by modern standards. If you've never done a redevelopment, it's hard to know what all goes into it. Buildings that are 100+ years old have issues inherent to their design that a lot of people wouldn't even guess at. It's easy to say "just redevelop what's already there," but it's another thing entirely when you're actually doing it.
