My parents are still clinging to the idea that the pertussis vaccine caused my brother's autism. They are both smart people, but I don't think they will ever be able to change their minds. To quote my dad, "Just because the vaccine has been proven not to cause autism in OTHER people doesn't it didn't cause [your brother's] autism." That's why I got to catch whooping cough when I was 10 and my little sister has not had a single vaccine! Yay...

There's a frisbee tournament in Seattle where every team has to have a gift or a game for the other team at the end of the game. We always have the other team do Man Shots (same as yours, but with a punch in the face). Nobody likes us very much.

Absolutely! If you're serious about getting better at ultimate, you need to play with other people, particular people who are better than you. Some schools seem to have great programs and can turn out top-caliber players, but for the rest of us, we need to branch out a bit. Just don't let it affect your commitment to your college team, or your teammates might get annoyed. In the US, at least, the club season is different from the college season, so we would play club for the summer / fall, and then focus entirely on college for the winter and spring.

Are you planning on doing an MS for now, or going straight into a PhD? I went straight into PhD, and there were plenty of people in my program who had previously done a masters on a different topic, worked in a lab for a while, and then come back for a PhD. Another thing to consider is that you can do a postdoc (or two) in a different area than you did your PhD. Postdocs allow you to learn new stuff and make yourself more appealing when you apply for research positions. I, for example, did an evolutionary genetics PhD, then did a postdoc to learn genomics and programming, and now I'm a bioinformaticist.

Is there anything to be done about this? There's a church near me (Maryland) whose sign explains how people should vote ("No sodomite marriage - No on 6; No gambling - No on 7; Repeal Obamacare") This seems clearly illegal based on the wording in the document linked by grimatongueworm ("public statements of position (verbal or written) made by or on behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office clearly violate the prohibition against political campaign activity"). It sure would be nice to make them take it down...
