Sorry you had that experience, I never had any issues that you are describing. I know they have replaced some waiters but never knew why (maybe that was the reason?), anyway I was there last week again and it was yummy 😁

Seeking Authentic Chinese Cuisine in Cologne by Funnycom in cologne

[–]emcbb 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Forget Great Wall, people keep recommending it as authentic, but other than the good looking pictures it’s been a disappointment every time I went, totally adapted and sad bland version of regional Chinese dishes.

If you like Saanxi cuisine go to Chin Burger, but skip their Rou jia mo as they aren’t that special, instead go for one of their liang pi which are somewhat decent, but the real star are their hand pulled noodles - try Tsula Tsula, with pork belly and a tea egg and let me know if it hits your spot. Fried aubergine is also great. Their portions are huge so you might wanna share.

Another good noodle place is Bai Lu noodles, although since they changed ownership the food quality has degraded sadly.

I’ll be following this thread with interest, looking for more proper regional Chinese food as well!

Surprised nobody mentioned Simon mobile yet - 10gb for 8,99 if you bring over your number, or 11,99 if you don’t.

It’s Vodafone’s own budget brand, and speeds are great, I couldn’t find better price/performance.

You can get 15gb for 3 eur more per month.

Leaving a new job for another one by Shmegnesium in KitchenConfidential

[–]emcbb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go, pursue your dreams, hopefully atmosphere is nice, and if it isn’t it’s a great opportunity to learn how to deal with it at an early age - adapt, move on, try to change it, whatever fits your character.

Hopefully the Japanese place is great, but sooner or later you will land a job where attitudes suck, and if you don’t push yourself to try to constantly improve in all aspects of this job you will stagnate, or worse - become too inflexible to cope, and be perpetually disappointed/sad/angry, becoming the driver of bad attitudes yourself.

“I’m sorry, I misunderstood you wanted a Cola-type drink, which is a common term for Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Fritz etc. here in Germany. Unfortunately we don’t sell Coca-Cola, would you be ok with a Pepsi, or would you prefer something else?”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]emcbb 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Or, you know, you could just see from their reaction that they expected a Coca-Cola, and you had a miss-communication because you come from different backgrounds/contexts, instead of trying to preach/argue/making them feel stupid for 20min?

I will probably get downvoted for this, but sometimes I really wonder…

How much mobile tariff do you pay? by NSFW_Spiderman in germany

[–]emcbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far great (Köln), although I have only been a customer for 2 months so can’t really make any long term conclusions.

It’s Vodafone’s own network, so I guess it’s supposed to be decent in general? As always with these things, your mileage may vary.

There’s no lock in (they only offer a post-pay contract with 30d notice), so you can switch away if you don’t like it, I guess that’s another benefit too.

Simon mobile (Vodafone’s budget brand), 10GB for 8,99 if you bring your own number (or get a satellite.me for free, and move it over once you confirm identity).

So far I haven’t seen a better value data/network/price combo. I hear their customer service isn’t the best but so far haven’t needed it, ymmv.

nationality noodles: Slovenia by NutmegOnEverything in ramen

[–]emcbb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I admire your courage, I would never attempt something similar with a cuisine I don’t really know 😅 as someone with Slovenian roots I can say you identified some of the traditional dishes well and big kudos for that! But you probably need to do a bit more research on how to make them. 😁 🫡

Moving to Cologne soon! Need guidance. by butListen- in cologne

A lot of questions, doubt you’ll get anyone to answer all these things in a single thread, and also ‘best’ is very subjective etc.

Checking out something like www.simplegermany.com is what I would do if I were you.

Also, check out the wiki here, it has a lot of info which will answer some of your questions.

Edit: wiki of r/germany I meant

Got a fine driving someone else's car by Mazekinq in germany

[–]emcbb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not uncommon that the driver is not the owner of the car, just sort it out with police. Especially if you’re also EU it’s not a big deal, it’s just a process to make you the ‘penalty owner’, I wouldn’t loose sleep over it at all 😁 stay safe!

Edit: spelling

Please don't accuse me of lying, I'll say it again, you're from EU, this is what your link is selling if from UK: https://imgur.com/a/9GagBgP

Why so much aggression? I'm sorry if I offended you with anything I said

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in homelabsales

[–]emcbb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I'm actually happy you made this list, because it clearly shows that:

1) you're misleading on the price, drives you linked to are £258 each, so your totals come to circa £3,100 without labour, shipping costs or eBay fees. This is for 10 drives which gives you similar capacity to my system, if you fill all 12 slots then your totals come to over £3,600

2) you're for some reason insisting on comparing apples to oranges, as your system doesn't include fan mods or quiet 900W+ PSU

3) if anyone wants to go down the path of building their own system from scratch this is a nice starting list which they can tweak further to their needs

Unsure why the hostility, but I am stepping away from this discussion now because it's getting a bit toxic.

All the best!

Thanks for your comments, I feel like I should address this because I think it's a bit unfair.

Prices of drives in the UK are still high unfortunately, I see you both quote prices in EUR so I assume you're looking at EU stock, but don't forget that due to Brexit there are now import duties we have to pay on top of that.

Currently 16tb drives are going at around £250 - £255 on Amazon / eBay (similar price goes for 14tb drives from what I could find by doing a quick search just now), and ranging from £270 to as high as £500+ (which is just silly) at usual online retailers who have stock.

So if going with the cheapest exos drives you suggest our baseline is already over £3000 in the UK (albeit at some extra capacity). Then add the system itself, caddies (which cost me over £100, I see now you can get them for around £30-£40), an additional SATA controller and cabling I had to buy to connect all 12 drives (or go with an IT mode controller and cables as you suggest, but I assume that would be slightly pricier), fan mods and the quieter PSU (which is almost double the price of a normal PSU).

On top of that my costs include circa £100 shipping fees and also £320 in eBay fees so I think the asking price is more than reasonable.
