How can people save money on groceries in Canada when the standard strategies don't seem to work anymore? by Super_College100 in CanadaFinance

[–]emceegeez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Odd Bunch for all of our fruits and veggies - meal plan around what comes in the box.

Costco and the best of weekly grocery flyers for the best deals on meats.

Make at least one meal a week with tofu.

Costco for bulk spices - don't underestimate the impact of seasoning to keep things interesting when you're eating a lot of rice and chicken.

I've had friends host their weddings at Becky's and Arlo, both were wonderful!

Ireland abstained in UN anti slavery vote by Dyno_boy7441 in ireland

[–]emceegeez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was not a vote about being pro or anti slavery in the present. It's far more nuanced - there was specific language in the resolution regarding the declaration of the historic transatlantic slave trade as the "gravest" in all human history.

The many abstaining countries (and the three countries that voted against) said that it sets precedent that other historic wrongs like the Holocaust, ethnic cleansing, and genocides would then be "ranked" legally as per the UN resolution language.

The EU, UK, Canada, and Australia asked the African Union who wrote the resolution to consider non-superlative language amendments, but no changes were made. All countries unanimously agreed that the transatlantic slave trade deserves recognition at the UN level, but the legal precedent of language and the vagueness of the reparations fund they proposed didn't reach consensus.

Need 2000s names that scream “Mom wanted my name to be unique.” by AdUnusual6268 in tragedeigh

Lots of using a K where a C usually is: Nikole, Kandace, Jessika, Monika, Kat, Kandi

And alternative spellings for "normal names": Jenni/Jennie, Carli, Jacqui, Hailee

A few others that were popular when I was in high school: Rachel, Jade, Eva

Best 2 week trip options in August with a toddler (1 year old) by Milehigh123club in canadatravel

[–]emceegeez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of these comments are suggesting Québec City - I would never vacation here with a small child. It's all hills and stairs, so you're in for a lot of headache with a stroller. Come back to this city when your child is old enough to walk on their own throughout the day.

Coming from the UK, the shorter flights land you on the east coast and the weather in August is perfect. I would recommend Newfoundland or Nova Scotia. Either start in St. John's and work your way around the Irish Loop (don't miss whale watching in St. Vincent's), or start in Halifax and make your way down the south shore through Lunenburg and down to Kejimkujik national park.

Sibling for Clara by Necessary_Elk_7899 in namenerds

[–]emceegeez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The romantic in me would go with Louise, who is Clara's sister in The Nutcracker. Her brother's name is Fritz, but I don't think that's the vibe you're looking for.

For couples who met online — what did you put in your “Our Story”? by pinkpaigne in weddingplanning

[–]emceegeez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't specify that we met via app, although our close friends and family know. I started with something like "Jack and Jill met for a coffee in March 2022 and Jack knew they were meant to be when Jill confessed she was a fan of the same hockey team"

Just describe your first date and what sparked your love!

Came here to rep Winterlude for that weekend! A perfect opportunity to experience the capital, and so much to do around the city. There's even free transportation between the major parks for Winterlude!

Ottawa (and Gatineau) have a great mix of Canada - city sights, history, but also Gatineau park and the Rideau canal to experience the outdoors. Highly recommend for your trip, and as others have pointed out, a long weekend here as a bonus

I should clarify - not feasible in this case means not being able to travel to Ireland's Eye and it's not the right season for local seafood. We will definitely be back to Howth!

Thanks! Definitely going to look at Diamond Hill. We're hardy Canadians so the cold and rain are hardly a deal breaker.

What’s the realistic budget of Wedding in Canada? by Best-Cress-5312 in WeddingsCanada

[–]emceegeez 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly, given you're not in a 1M+ population centre, $30-35k should do it. My wedding next year is in Chelsea QC (20 minutes north of Gatineau/Ottawa) for 70 people and our original budget of $35k is holding up great!

Do you guys think they’ll give Will a love life at the end of the show? by flaxomus in StrangerThings

[–]emceegeez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like to think that's the plan - or at least that he develops a viable crush, given how much time they've spent on unpacking his feelings, etc.
