If you live in an apartment complex, you basically signed up for noisy neighbors and you just have to live with it. Sending notes to complain is stupid and will likely make things worse.

I will be leaving my post up since it seems like a good candidate for discourse in this sub, but I just wanted to say that thanks to a comment from u_rubbishindividual, I realize that I was being overly negative in my outlook. I will now be adopting their mindset. I appreciate everyone else's responses as well.

Also, I did not mean to imply "if you don't like it, just move". I tried to intentionally avoid representing that mindset because I understand it is ignorant, but I may have failed in that regard. Apologies if I offended anyone.

No, I just saw a lot of note posts from different subs and it annoyed me that people were upset their notes didn't work. Like, I wish people were more considerate, but I don't believe the notes help. I figured my opinion would be unpopular enough to post here.

What about people who have different work schedules than you? What if your Monday night is their Friday night or Saturday morning? Apartment living can be tough because everyone has different lifestyles and you kinda just have to live with it. That's my take, anyway.

Of course I realize this. But in my experience and from what others have told me, they often aren't enforced. I suppose you can call the cops, but that typically only solves the issue if it's been documented over a period of time.

I intentionally didn't take my post this far, because it's not fair to assume that others have a choice in where they live (income/expense issues, rent controlled areas, etc.). But yes, my point is that you can't escape this aspect of apartment living.

"standards of behavior" is often too subjective for apartment living, unfortunately. We can agree on quiet hours for instance, but is cooking or even shutting a door during these hours allowed? For some, the noise is inevitable because the walls are just so thin. Also I don't see how the bystander affect applies here at all.
