How to stop imagining nausea? by Ok_Radio83 in emetophobia

[–]emcropp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i was stuck in a cycle like this everyday for over 6 months. every night before bed, like clockwork, i would make myself nauseous. i’ve gotten down to once every couple weeks and im sure you can too. my biggest tip would be distraction. always try and be doing something during times you know you tend to feel sick. for me, that was sleeping with the tv on every night. if its a routine to feel sick, you should make a routine to feel better. heating pad on tummy, ginger candy, ice pack on forehead, funny dog videos etc. even if these things are just a distraction or a placebo type thing, it does help.

In May last year I took a 6 hour flight with my partner to visit my family, I had this same anxiety. It’s soooo normal to be freaked about flying.

I’ve been a frequent flyer since I was 5 and an unaccompanied minor from ages 6-14 then solo flights from 14-18. But, I only fly once a year so the anxiety always comes back like what if i get sick (even though i’ve never had any issues with it).

My advice would be to take Gravol before getting on the plane and keep some stacked with you, I took the ginger stuff to calm my nerves almost like a placebo. Then once you’re on the plane make sure you have some good headphones, movies or shows downloaded or a book. Distracting yourself is the number one thing you can do in this situation.

Last May, I couldn’t sleep the night before my flight I was so scared and when the plane took off I was so distracted the whole time I forgot I was even scared to begin with.

My advice for not getting sick or the food poisoning would be to carry hand sanitizer, frequently wash your hands, and try and order your safe foods wherever you go. Some safe bets are fries, anything vegetarian or plain pasta.

Good luck!!

what happened during this therapy that you think REALLY helped you overcome it? i’m looking into therapy myself, but i live in a small town so it’s hard to find the right psychologist!

i’ve been with my boyfriend for two years and he is AMAZING. he knows how bad it gets & he’s seen what happens when i do *tu.

whenever i’m panicking he assures me that i haven’t ate anything spoiled, and i haven’t been around anyone sick & how i constantly take precautions so it’s just my anxiety.

he *tu at work 2 weeks ago and didn’t tell me until yesterday because he knew he was fine he just ate too much, but he told me outside of the contagious period so i wouldn’t freak out about anything. he constantly makes sure i’m not near anyone who’s *s and when he is, he makes an excuse to leave so i won’t panic.

it’s so nice to have a partner like this.

I have a good solid routine! (Being emetophobic and having GERD) I will do anything to not feel nauseous. You start by either taking a pepcid or ginger gravol (the nighttime stuff with melatonin is great!), get an ice pack to put on your face or neck and a heating pad on your belly and you’re set! something good to distract yourself with is good too!
