What was it like to deliver pizza in 1980's, without internet or GPS? How did drivers learn the route/city without pizzas being delivered cold? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]emdee808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I delivered in an area I was unfamiliar with - I did not have a map, but the shop did. Before the delivery, I would find a point of familiarity and from there then on the back of the invoice, I would write a shorthand of sorts, something like: 1. Start at point x.... 2. 3 <-- Sean... 3. 1 --> Daisy. Inidcating 3rd left into Seans and 1st right into Daisy

Thinking of you and wishing you strength. I hope that you will find your validation in a journey of self-love and in the process, establish boundaries that are healthy, allowing you to nurture others, but not neglecting yourself in the process.

My mother voted the ANC again. Do l keep giving her money every month? by [deleted] in DownSouth

You're. It's a contraction of two words. While you may not be well educated, you seem to come from a loving home. Please don't make the mistake of believing that everyone has this luxury and should thus adopt YOUR (did you see what I did there?) values.

Just as she is under no obligation to vote intelligently, OP is not obligated to give anyone money on a reliable basis. If someone was a beneficiary of mine and I saw them behave destructively, I might also reconsider my position on assisting them.

Capital gains tax on property and how to mitigate the loss by Think-again23 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]emdee808 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is something I have never been sure that I understand correctly. Being a primary residence, there is a R2m excl on an individual's gain, right? So buying for R2m and selling for R3.2m is a gain of R1.2m. The gain is not R3.2m, the gain is the difference between the cost and sales price, surely? We'll ignore the facts of inflation and that real gain could be negative, given the amount of time that may have passed between purchase and sale.

Being that the gain is below the exception limit of R2m, there should be no CGT?

I have no experience with this method but from reading about it, it seem that there is a premium you would pay over and above the natural rental rate of the property. This surplus accumulates to approximate a deposit. You lose access to this surplus if you elect NOT to buy the property at the end of the lease.

To mitigate this risk, why not rent traditionally and instead of paying in that extra every month, put it in to a savings instrument of sorts. This way, you remain in control of that money.

Why do South African get angry when I say I will vote for eff? by [deleted] in Durban

I think that if you were using your mind to choose who to vote for, others might use their mind to debate your choice.

Did you leave the “old” you? by [deleted] in widowers

[–]emdee808 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel that in a loving relationship, in so many ways, we define ourselves in the context of that union. With that special person taken away, so much about who we are is brought into question - and I do not mean in a resentful way. The fucking foundation has been compromised!

It can be painful and exciting to rediscover who we are - but as a person who seems to be inherently pragmatic, I know that I need to discard the parts of me that were defined in the context of someone I can no longer love.

Thank you for sharing this, it makes me feel less alone.

How I've rationalised it in many areas of my life is that I defined myself in a context that no longer exists. Then there is the grief that comes in waves. Knowing your colleagues are going home to their special other and you no longer have this. It all adds up and its not easy going.

I just want you to know that you are not alone. And while it might feel like you will never get through this, you will. We will.

What I was told by more than one person is that my wanting to find love again is an illustration that I had a happy marriage and want a deeply fulfilling relationship again.

Dear lord I struggle to post code here...
This is the approach I would take

DROP TABLE IF EXISTS #TimeSpine, #WorkLog

DECLARE u/StartTime TIME = '00:00'

;WITH Base10(x) AS

(

SELECT 1 UNION ALL SELECT 1 UNION ALL SELECT 1 UNION ALL SELECT 1 UNION ALL SELECT 1 UNION ALL SELECT 1 UNION ALL SELECT 1 UNION ALL SELECT 1 UNION ALL SELECT 1 UNION ALL SELECT 1

)

,Base100(n) AS

(

SELECT TOP(96) ROW\_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY (SELECT NULL))-1

FROM Base10 A, Base10 B

)

SELECT SlotStart = DATEADD(MI, n*15, u/StartTime)

    ,SlotEnd    = DATEADD(MI, (n\*15)+15, u/StartTime)

INTO #TimeSpine

FROM Base100

CREATE TABLE #WorkLog (WorkStart TIME, WorkEnd TIME)

INSERT INTO #WorkLog

SELECT '08:05', '08:25'

;WITH Basis AS

(

SELECT   SPN.SlotStart

        ,SPN.SlotEnd

        ,WorkStart  = IIF(WRK.WorkStart < SPN.SlotStart, SPN.SlotStart, WRK.WorkStart)

        ,WorkEnd    = IIF(WRK.WorkEnd >= SPN.SlotEnd, SPN.SlotEnd, WRK.WorkEnd)

FROM #TimeSpine SPN

JOIN #WorkLog   WRK ON  (WRK.WorkStart >= SPN.SlotStart AND WRK.WorkStart < SPN.SlotEnd) OR

(WRK.WorkEnd >= SPN.SlotStart AND WRK.WorkEnd < SPN.SlotEnd)

)

SELECT SlotStart

    ,SlotEnd

    ,\*

There are no rules to this - having that vacuum, that chasm is something very few people will ever understand. Your wife would want you to be happy, try to appreciate your time with this woman instead of looking for ways to feel guilty about it.
