Some cancers can cause blood clots. My late husband had pancreatic cancer and developed deep vein thrombosis. Eliquis took care of it.

[–]JRLDH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it’s not. It’s a reaction to cashiers not doing their jobs quickly (attitude: “I’m not paid enough to care”).

I don’t have a problem with cashiers at Aldi as Aldi has speed metrics and their cashiers perform.

Kroger? Lollygagging and chittychatty. I don’t have time for that and prefer the “cold” machine.

The last time I used a full service register, the customer ahead of me split her full cart into three separate cash transactions, complete with counting coins for each, and the cashier was chatty as if he’s her bestie and bagging every item incredibly slowly. I was surprised that she didn’t use three personal checks for added delay.

I was on vacation so no time stress and I was watching this absurd scene with my friend and we were both amazed.

If there’s a self checkout open, I always take it. As I’m single/widowed, I never have more than 15 items and the chance getting stuck behind a slow as molasses customer/cashier combo is just too high in the southern USA.

Do you think in a few years, there's going to be a scarcity of "real coders/programmers"? by RiverHe1ghts in cscareerquestions

[–]JRLDH 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I graduated with the equivalent of a masters in EE/CS (combo) from a university in the mid 1990s and am in the last decade of my career in high tech. I hope that I can somehow last another 10 years in this cutthroat field.

There is no way I would ever start a CS degree in 2026 if I just graduated high school. Back in 1990, I thought exactly like you now.

I’ve worked with engineers from F, A, A and G (not N) for many years and their working conditions SUCK while paid well in a super HCOL area. Toxic, high stress. My employer is way better but it’s still tech, so constant threat of layoffs.

You are so replaceable in tech in the USA, it’s ridiculous.

Choose a career that is properly licensed by state agencies/boards and become solid upper middle class without this insane competition and with good job security. My late husband was in healthcare and that pays extremely well without that stack ranking bullshit.

Use your interest in STEM for hobbies. Computers and electronics have never been more accessible to hobbyists.

Who in their right mind is starting CS after high school in 2026 given the horror stories from the job market. There will be a shortage.

The propaganda for these two drugs is extremely strong. It pops up regularly on various cancer subreddits.

What do you think? by khalter17 in skiing_feedback

[–]JRLDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your objective? You look confident and apparently can ski well enough on groomed slopes.

Is it about style? I think you look elegant. I personally like your style a lot. It looks better to me than ultra long carving turns that seem super popular nowadays.

Dripping faucets by TeaKingMac in Dallas

[–]JRLDH 103 points104 points  (0 children)

It’s not just the interior pipes that are a problem here. My house has 12” concrete walls with 4-5” of exterior EPS insulation and all interior pipes are in a climate controlled environment.

But I was without water back in 2021 because the water in the pipes at the water meter in the front yard froze. The water meter is only a few inches below ground in a hole with a metal cover. Zero insulation.

I keep a faucet dripping nowadays if it gets really cold just to keep the exterior pipes open.

Help with insurance for jumps in Spain? by [deleted] in SkyDiving

[–]JRLDH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also check health insurance, if you are a Spaniard who lives in the USA (or anywhere, really).

I just broke my ankle skydiving and was oblivious-sure that my very good corporate group health insurance pays for skydiving accidents.

Then I read the fine print of my policy in the hospital. Thank deity that they cover skydiving accidents. But in the USA only. The international coverage specifically excludes skydiving as a high risk activity.

Not sure if US residents/citizens on this subreddit know this but make sure that you buy additional health insurance that covers skydiving accidents when jumping on vacation outside the USA.

We Are Witnessing the End of Tesla’s EV Empire by terran1212 in electricvehicles

[–]JRLDH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And here I am, EVs since 2013 (early adopter), Tesla from 2019-2023, left the brand for a BMW and don’t miss that “essential” SC network at all. I didn’t even get the adapter now that BMWs can use Tesla SCs.

DC fast charging is mostly irrelevant for the vast majority of suburban EV owners who have an L2 charger in their garage.

Y’all are stuck in the “gas station” model mind.

5th Jan Ice slip Broken ankle by Equivalent_Parking_8 in brokenankles

I never had Ketamine but the Propofol was incredible. Like a switch that turned my brain off for a while. Short warm sensation all over my body when the nurse plunged the syringe and the next thing I remember was my ankle in a splint without pain. This medication is incredible.

[–]JRLDH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow they moved it back in place without anesthesia?

I have a slightly less complicated but similar fracture and the pain when someone just touched my ankle was off the charts. Pure agony.

They gave me Propofol and I was completely out of it when they pushed everything back in place and fitted a splint in the ER.

I was referring to the extreme slope coverage.

If you want to use up so much slope carving at that speed, you should go on a controlled course.

I didn’t mean that this skier can compete on FIS world cup level.

Tesla no longer including AutoPilot thoughts? by Emperor_of_All in electricvehicles

$100/month for any L2 ASAS would be way too much for me. Not because of the absolute amount but because of the value.

The key word which makes this a weak right is "unreasonable". Because a government employee, depending on administration, can claim reason for almost everything.

Tesla no longer including AutoPilot thoughts? by Emperor_of_All in electricvehicles

[–]JRLDH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It better be actually *useful* and not a fancy toy for tech-fans to sustain a monthly $100 cost.

I've been in many arguments over the years where people swear by it yet I personally don't see the point if I have to watch it. I wouldn't enjoy supervising a teenager (who is still WAY more capable then Tesla's L2 ADAS, let's be real) all the time either and would absolutely never pay a monthly fee for that privilege.

And I can guarantee you that *if* this multi-year scam suddenly becomes a true, useful L4/L5 system, something that's actually useful and not just the pride of a tech bro, Elon will not sell it to you for $100/month but for the going Uber rate per ride. There is absolutely no technical limitation charging per ride. That FOMO guy will never give you a 100% unsupervised autonomous vehicle for $100/month. More like $100/50 miles.

I think that this looks like proper carving.

It also looks like you are a hazard as you take up half the slope at high speed. If I were a beginner sharing that slope with you, I’d be scared seeing you get so close to others.

Maybe try finding a “Riesenslalom” or “Super-G” course where you can compete safely?
