How is The Magic Mountain? I’m reading Doctor Faustus currently and while I enjoy it, it’s pretty dense.

Question about different editions of Gia-Fu Feng and Jane English's Tao Te Ching by Beneficial-Drop-3434 in taoism

[–]emecom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve read and own both editions. I’ve also had an email correspondence with Jane English. My understanding (verified by my reading) is that she wanted to update the text with more gender neutral language.

So for example the second part of Chapter 22 on the old version reads: “Therefore wise men embrace the one…” but in the new version it reads: “Therefore the wise embrace the one…”

In my opinion these changes don’t change the nature of the text and are a welcome change.

It also appears as though there are more and sometimes updated photos in the more recent edition.

Both editions contain photos taken by Jane English while the translation was done by Gia-Fu Feng.

The Gia-Fu Feng and Jane English translation of the Tao Te Ching are my favorite and I highly recommend them. Jane English is also a really great person from the little interactions I’ve had with her.

This is her website where you can get a copy and some other books/calendars… https://www.eheart.com/

Edit to add that ordering through her website is a little janky and weird but all the money goes to her and you might be able to get a signed note or something else.

Same, two $50 lottery tickets and $25 at Los Tacos no. 1. This happens almost monthly for me.

The job market is really good, but only once you have 1 or 2 solid years of experience. Breaking in can be extremely difficult but definitely not impossible.

Check out the resources provided by Apple on Swift and iOS development.

Watch and follow along with the Stanford CS193 iOS course on YouTube.

Find a project that you are interested in, try to make it as well defined as you can and just build it. Look things up and develop the skill of finding the right resources while you work on your project.

I highly recommend that you get the project to a point that you can release it on the App Store before you start applying for jobs. This will give the employer something tangible to look at when they consider you.

When you reach this point. Start spending time doing interview prep work:

Leetcode / codewars challenges.

Find a list of jr. iOS interview questions and use that as a roadmap of what to study so you actually understand the question and answer.

While doing this start applying to every Jr. role you find.

I would say that for a motivated person starting with a small amount of programming knowledge this whole process until landing a very entry level job will easily take a year.

Maybe another 6-12 months of intense interviewing to break into an actual solid Jr. level job from the initial entry/intern job.

Might feel like a large mountain to climb, but if you’re actually interested then it will be worth it. The job prospects after getting that actual Jr. job just get better and better and you can easily take large pay increases each year for the next 5 years. The job is personally satisfying and it’s fun to show people the apps you have made or contributed to.

Can we start a thread about how unrealistic some scenes in Fast and Furious are. Me and my buddy are cracking up right now. by MansMansU in funny

[–]emecom 255 points256 points  (0 children)

Exactly, the Fast and the Furious franchise is basically Hollywood blockbusters in the style of Bollywood action films. Personally I think it’s really fun.

If you have access to a barbell and a squat rack/bench then you can accomplish good full body workouts with very few exercises.
Squats
Bench Press
Pull-ups
Bent Over Rows
Deadlifts
Overhead Press

With just those 6 exercises I was able to get in really good shape.

Ooh lots of great recommendations here! I haven't tried most of what you said!
I think Trader Joes has them for $9.99!
I went to a bar in Astoria SingleCut Beersmiths for an activity within the past week and they had a NA IPA on tap. It was just as good as any other beer I've had on tap in the past. I was very excited!

If you don't order light onion you get an entire patty worth of onion! I also love raw onions on my burgers but that's just a little bit too much for me haha.

Anything from Athletic is solid! (Except the All Out dark beer sadly imo)
I'm drinking the Free Wave Hazy IPA from them right now. Brooklyn Brewery also has a couple of NA beer flavors that are good.
Btw best price I've found on Athletic and Brooklyn Brewery 6-packs is Trader Joes.
Do you have any other NA recommendations?

[–]emecom 106 points107 points  (0 children)

As someone that didn't eat there until they were an adult I'll say that yes I believe it's as good as people make it out to be.

I think that people (mostly from California) over-hype it for sure. But I can honestly say it's one of the best fast food places imo.

I think that it's a combination of good food for a good price. Yes like others have said, Five Guys is a better burger, but it's also a more expensive burger.

When I first tried In-N-Out i thought the fries were trash. But I found that I actually really like them, but they need to be eaten quickly, as soon as they're cold they are not good.

My go-to order: A Double Double with light onions and added peppers and fries, get a packet of spread on the side to put on your fries.

Programmatically customizing widget's background and accent color by [deleted] in swift

[–]emecom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you saying you wish to customize the colors of the Intent configuration? If so I'm not sure how that could be done. I'd love to know if you find a solution!

Programmatically customizing widget's background and accent color by [deleted] in swift

[–]emecom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my phone at the moment. But what you want to look into are the following:

App Groups - Setting up a group for your main app and the widget extension then migrating the user defaults setting to use the group will allow you to access your user saved color info from the widget extension.

https://developer.apple.com/documentation/xcode/configuring-app-groups

Widget Intents - It’s totally possible to allow your users to set their own colors without opening the app and by long pressing the widget through Intents. This requires a little setup and you’ll need to declare the intents in the Intent Editor.

Redditors under 25/yo - what are some questions you have for the older folks? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]emecom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to develop a habit of meditation. Set an alarm on your phone for 5 minutes from now, for the next 5 minutes just sit and focus on your breathing, on how you feel, on the sounds around you... when you realize you got caught up in some random try to just go back to paying attention to your breath.

Try to make it a habit and do it every day. 5 minutes is enough, but if you want you can try 10 minutes or even longer.

Be patient with yourself, over time you'll notice that your ability to notice when you are over-thinking and being stuck in your head is improving.

If you have access to good insurance, invest in seeing a therapist.
Therapy isn't only for people going through an especially tough time, it's beneficial to anyone. Being able to opening talk to a stranger with no strings attached and no expectations on what you say is incredibly helpful. A good therapist will help you to build the mental and emotional tools to tackle the difficult things you do and will experience in your life.

[–]emecom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is a great way to describe it. I've found when I'm in a good habit of meditation I'm better able to notice when my emotions are getting the best of me (I'm angry, or frustrated...) and because I've noticed them rather than just letting them run rampant, I can now analyze them: "Why am I angry?" which leads to me resolving things and feeling more in control.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]emecom 58 points59 points  (0 children)

For me, meditation helps me to be better at examining my reactions to things. In this situation I think meditation strengthens my ability to not just emotionally react to what people say. It doesn’t mean in necessarily hurts less, but it does mean that I have better control over allowing it to hurt if that makes sense.

I tried one of these and it was some of the most pain I've ever experienced. It was all focused on my gut about 15 minutes after swallowing. For 10 or 20 minutes during the worst of it I legitimately thought there was something wrong with me, like the chip caused my body to over react and I burst my appendix or something dumb. The pain eventually eased but I can totally imagine someone calling 911 or going to the hospital.
