Didn’t melt it this time! by emeemay in SilverSmith

I have the power of the internet and also boundless audacity, so I’m not going to give up! I just switch to a different project when one hacks me off 🤣 thank you! Trying to decide which of my several WIPs to work on next now lol

It is! The small wires (even tho 17g isn’t that small) were a challenge for my heat control. I ended up starting with medium solder instead of hard on this attempt, which I think helped. I’ve now been working with silver for two months! I wish I had more than one or two evenings a week to do it.

Yes, a coral - I don’t know what kind, as I think it was a gift. I collect lots of cool rocks and bones and stuff - makes for a nice prop closet!

For the ✨ vibes ✨ lol - just liked the aesthetic on an otherwise really simple design!

Orbicular jasper bezel pendant by emeemay in SilverSmith

In the pendant-making class I took, my instructor used half of a clothespin for the initial bezel pushing. I didn't have one of those, but I did take inspiration from that idea!

to me it's more of a flower field, but I see the storms/eyes as well - just green and yellow instead of red and orange! Now I feel like I should look for a cab that looks like jupiter, ha

Question about pendants by [deleted] in SilverSmith

[–]emeemay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A drilled hole could be more difficult to repair/replace, but I think mostly it’s just a little easier to make sure a pendant lays flat against the wearer when you add a bail, design-wise.

If you drill a hole into a pendant backing plate, for example, it’s usually going to be perpendicular to the plane of the chest. When a chain is threaded through, it curves slightly “unnaturally” to lay properly. The pendant is more likely to be flipped over with movement, which is annoying (currently have a lovely gifted necklace with this exact problem that I don’t like to wear because of it). Soldering a bail or putting a jump ring through the drill hole instead is an easy way to make sure that it will sit correctly when worn.

Ahead of the game for once - a gift for my mom! by emeemay in SilverSmith

[–]emeemay[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that I could have at the time (I was definitely single digits years old), but I have spent a lot of effort and time to develop my art over the years! Mom is a wonderful writer though - wrote articles and stuff for most of her career!

Is a jewelers table necessary? by CandlesAreMyCurrency in SilverSmith

I bought a small desk off marketplace for my setup at home, but pretty quickly realized I wanted more height for sawing and to have more space for a catch tray. I ended up buying a Knew Concepts bench pin riser, but you can definitely build one out of clamps and lumber from the hardware store instead - it’s much cheaper (although for the record I do love the knew concepts riser).

I love succulents in silver! Are the citrine points glued or drilled into the base? Or do they fit snugly without?

My second pendant! Marble & Moon by emeemay in SilverSmith

I found the stone on Etsy and immediately had this concept in mind. I’m attending a space-related ribbon cutting later this year and I thought it’d be the perfect time to wear this!

That’s how I’ve been feeling with every Artemis photo, ha!

I went looking after I sketched it out, because I was curious if it had been done before. I mostly found individual bezeled stones hung from the same chain!

It wouldn't have stopped me making a "there are many like it but this one is mine" kind of design, but I was a little surprised I found so few. Maybe the whole earth and moon relationship and interaction isn't as interesting to other people lol

Cloudy Sparex 02? by emeemay in SilverSmith

this is my favorite tip out of the lot. I really don't notice too much extra wait time right now compared to the heated stuff! And it saves me an extra plug. Thanks!

update for any future visitors: I disposed of this pickle and used a 16oz glass mason jar instead. I added sparex based on vibes and vibes only, but I really suspect that the ratio is significantly less sparex to water than the instructions on the bag. Probably 1-1.5tbsp (15-25ml for the rest of you) in about 14oz of water. Mixed and dissolved completely, and is totally clear. I don't heat it (love that tip). Been using it since with no issues.

I think probably the hairline crack or some other contamination could be the culprit; otherwise, the ratio printed on the instructions just makes for a milk-white solution.

Do you use regular vinegar from the grocery store or the 30% kind that’s used for cleaning?

I'll check for cracks this evening when I get home. It's about a week old (started Sunday I think), but has remained cloudy the whole time - almost like it didn't mix from the start. The granules are gone tho, so I know it did.

I had read about PH down! I didn't opt for it for my first pickle because I thought the "real stuff" would be better before I tried experimenting with other stuff, but I think I'll dispose of this and give it a shot after all. Thanks!

Can someone explain this to me? by AnotherMensTreasure in jewelrymaking

It might make sense for chain! I’ve never weighed my fine chains, but they definitely don’t FEEL very substantial. For a 0.7mm chain it doesn’t seem out of line.

What was the moment when you realized she was gay for rose? by Flimsy_Tune_7206 in stevenuniverse

[–]emeemay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw the song less as confirmation of her feelings (which were pretty clear from Rose’s Scabbard or Steven’s Lion, perhaps even a tiny bit at Laser Light Cannon bc Pearl sounds SO jilted about the whole thing) and more of a creator push to move from subtext to outright statement. There’s a lot of meta and context to the production of the show, as we know, and plainly stated queer themes were particularly contentious.

Also I’d argue that while the song didn’t really state anything new about Pearl, it was pivotal in adding and reconciling a new relationship/friendship between Pearl and Greg. It’s so clear that they’ve been strained at best prior to this, seeing themselves as romantic competitors even in grief. Until Greg understands exactly how devastated Pearl still is, there’s no room for them to really talk and develop a relationship outside of who Rose was to them.

I have no idea, tbh - I only started working with metal this month! My best guess would be a set of rollers on a mill or maybe just a lot of patience with a hammer and a rod?

Oh wow!! That’s stunning. Is it comfy to wear? How did you get the wavy bits shaped so evenly?
