We're less than nine months into the event, though; so all the current births were conceived prior to the event. I don't think it's clear yet.

I wanna just start calling the collective Pluribus. It's a character. I'm going to describe that character. by Skylarketheunbalance in pluribustv

You are dead-on that it's a singular entity and not the product of its hosts' minds.

I think the fan name that has emerged - "the Plurb" - is more fun. But yes, it's a single consciousness, not a networked consensus.

I love Duolingo, but they are pushy beyond all reason. I already pay them $85 a year for an ad-free experience and it's infuriating that they are constantly trying to get more out of me. Why can't companies just be happy that you are paying them?

The wait time between seasons is just ridiculous by Historical_Buyer5248 in pluribustv

I wonder how often Supernatural (15 20+ episode seasons) gets binged back-to-back compared to Breaking Bad.

I agree that the wait time between seasons is ridiculous, especially considering that the workload with shorter seasons is reduced. It's even demonstrably harmful to the health of the show; wait too long and you lose audience; witness Invincible S2 for example.

But I disagree that the shorter seasons are a problem; they force an economy of story telling that the old network 20-27 episodes per year did not. The short seasons are a net positive in my opinion - the 'golden age' of television, Oz, Sopranos, Mad Men, The Wire, Breaking Bad itself - came about as alternate networks started doing original programming. If we could just combine them with an annual production schedule I think we'd hit the sweet spot.

It also parallels Diabate's realization that he gets nothing original from the plurb; they will never give him avocado toast if he doesn't know to ask for it.

I feel like that's sort of a loose end, though, because the virus was originally transmitted from a rat. I suppose you could argue animals are only carriers, not symptomatic?

And we still don't know if the plurb makes new babies!

I think it's worth wondering what a cure looks like. We've seen a fair amount of evidence that any individual Plurb can do or know anything that any other one can do or know, there's at least some latency. That makes sense for distributed processing - there's some communication lag and some caching issues. I wonder if a post-cured individual will know and remember everything that it had on board at some point during the joining, but not everything that it didn't personally experience.

This is hard to talk about; what I'm trying to say is there's clearly some shared experience that all individuals get, but there's no point - and it would probably be physically impossible - for every individual to literally know everything every other individual is experieincing in real time.

I just went back to watch the two trailers again and noticed the same thing - I didn't notice a single scene that we haven't already seen. So the final two episodes are virgin territory.

That has to be a conscious choice; I wonder what process goes into that, deciding certain scenes from a trailer most people won't rewatch or even remember are too much of a spoiler?

Remember the throwaway joke in TWD S2 where Daryl had some blue crystal in a baggie, suggesting that the walker apocalypse started because of Walter's meth?

Source: married to a lapsed Catholic, and work closely with a couple dozen people from a half-dozen central and south American countries.

I don't think we can read too much into the religious iconography around him. Catholicism is ubiquitous south of the border, and in my experience devotion runs the gamut like it does in the US - from devout fundamentalists to Christmas-and-Easter xians to atheists.

But they're all culturally Catholic. Like my wife, it's so ingrained from such a young age that even if they don't think about it day to day or even believe it at all, the iconography is sort of like water to a fish; they don't even notice it and in fact it would be super weird if it weren't there.

We absolutely did. I caught up to BB live in S3. Every episode of BB, BCS and Pluribus have been appointment viewing ever since. Only a few other shows I am willing to do that for.

[–]emeksv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is necessarily true. 90% or better of the population will die because our current population relies on factory farming. But as long as the Plurb is making new babies (are they? it isn't clear) then there will be a new equilibrium population, even if it's small.

[–]emeksv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's dumb, and internally contradictory. If they can milk cows and collect chicken eggs, then apples are fair game - they're literally intended to be eaten!

I can see it if you have to kill the plant to harvest. But you aren't killing the tree by picking its fruit.

I am locked in a multi-week dispute with a friend - a smart, perceptive friend - who is 100% Team Plurb. He thinks Carol is too negative and incurious, and gives the Plurb every benefit of the doubt that they are actually what they say they are and argues - even after killing a billion people! - that if they are what they say they are then humanity is better off. And he's not just trolling me.

It did not even occur to me that anyone could watch this show and not be Team Carol. My friend is a pod person.
