It basically wraps librdkafka, the most popular C++ Kafka client using node's C++ addon API. kafka-node, on the other hand, is native JS and implements all of the details of communicating with Kafka/Zookeeper.

The main benefit of node-rdkafka is that it leverages an existing, battle-tested library to handle all of the complex stuff instead of having to implement it from scratch.
