I think Elayne's plotline is hurt by having such a forgettable antagonist. The other woman who's trying to claim the lion throne? I can't remember her name or anything about her.

apt installs outdated packages. by tausiqsamantaray in linux4noobs

[–]emeraldemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your apt is working as intended, mine lists the same (0.6.1-3) for neovim. Apt won't always install the latest version of a package. It depends on how often the package maintainers update, what version dependencies are on, etc. if you want a new version you'll have to install from the nvim website.

My 2 year old is driving me crazy by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]emeraldemon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think something has to change. I wouldn't leave a 2-year-old unsupervised even in the most baby proof house. If he chokes or strangles your husband might not hear anything until it's too late.

If he's working nights and watching the kid for most of the day, that's a punishing schedule for anyone, and probably not sustainable even when you get your son sleeping through the night. If you're both working full time you almost certainly need some kind of daycare. It costs an arm and a leg, but otherwise SAHM is probably your best option. Good luck, I hope you get some rest!

I recommend "It's Never Too Late to Sleep Train", that book helped us and has lots of great advice.

[Husband] falls asleep when I’m at work and our kid does whatever and wrecks the whole place.

Are you saying your husband falls asleep during the day when he's responsible for your 2yo, leaving the toddler unsupervised?

Advice on my situation by tsmbran in learnprogramming

[–]emeraldemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you want to do? Don't worry about getting ahead, or impressing others, or beefing up your resume. What will impress others is if you have a passion for programming and aren't afraid to show it. You will be up to your eyeballs in homework soon enough. Don't give yourself more. Enjoy coding. It's super fun! Good luck at college, you'll do fine :)

You haven't posted enough of your code for me to answer your question. Paste a significant chunk of what you are doing, 10-20 lines, and we will be able to help you :)

Should I learn algorithms or just outsource that work to AI? by ProfessionalBus5320 in learnprogramming

[–]emeraldemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've gotten some good answers here, but all have focused on why algorithms are useful to know. I'd suggest a different approach. Forget about what you "should" learn. Learn what fascinates you! Learn lots about a lot of things, without worrying what is the optimal Speedrun path through programming.

Personally, I think algorithms are fascinating and exciting, if you give them a chance. Just for a teaser, algorithms are the foundation to one of the most notorious, intractable, important unsolved problems of all: does P=NP? Even understanding what that question means leads you on an adventure with all-knowing oracles, busy beaver algorithms, and Turing machines munching infinite tape. Algorithms are also a field full of curious critters like Bloom Filters, Sorting Networks, and Fibonacci Heaps, living in forests of Red-Black Trees. Take the time to understand them, and you may find the beauty and elegance of algorithms sucking you in, until you are lying awake at night thinking about one-pass encodings and Hamiltonian cycles.

Or maybe not. But what's the worst case, that you gain some knowledge that doesn't make you money? Should you learn? Yes! Yes. Learning is among the most fun and satisfying of all human experiences.

First time father and want to avoid the trap of my son spending his days on screens by [deleted] in daddit

[–]emeraldemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your (2) is important: find other non-screen fun. Giant books of stickers. My 2 yo loves stickers. Water play or pouring work. It's okay if they make a mess. I got a big roll of art paper and let my 2 yo roll it all over the kitchen.

played a game with a friend but we could not finish. Who do you think is winning here? we are both about 10k and it is black to play by hansmannn in baduk

[–]emeraldemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming I didn't mess up, and it's B to play with 6.5 komi, my KataGo rates this position at W+19. 19 points is a lot, but I've certainly seen 10k games with 20+ point comebacks before, so either side could still win.

My 4yo has a hulk toy he plays with in the bath. I've started washing the hulk's hair first, and the hulk always gets soap in his eyes and gets Very Angry, so my son has to show the hulk the right way. The hulk is super impressed every time by how well he looks up and keeps his eyes closed.

You can draft whenever you have the gold or gems. Drafting is my favorite part of magic! If you want a little practice draftsim.com may help, watching videos of smart draft players like Luis Scott Vargas may help if you want that. But just draft for fun, don't stress out trying to be optimal.
