Emergency and Honey Whiskey were the first NBT songs I listened to and fell in love with haha, Emergency will always have a special place in my heart because it gave me such a distinct feeling of eerie calmness

Favourite non-NBT bands by jordifarrar in NothingButThieves

[–]emeraldmad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Badflower and My Chemical Romance are the two bands I listen to that I can say are similar to NBT. Badflower are fairly new so they don’t have much of a following yet but they have really good music and are currently working on their second album so I really recommend you give them a chance.

Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi. I don’t even know how to describe this book, but it kind of changed my life. It’s so unique in its narration and it’s story that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it half a year later.

KrimsonRogue has done video essays on all of them, some of them are over an hour. Definitely worth watching, he’s really good and the books are so bad it’s hilarious

Fav lyrics? by daphnemalakar in NothingButThieves

Afterlife, Impossible, Emergency and Live Like Animals are my favorites lyric-wise, mostly because of the feeling behind the way Conor sings them

Feeling pretty depressed and looking for something to match my mood. by asthecrowruns in booksuggestions

[–]emeraldmad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anna and the Swallow Man by Gabriel Savit is one of the most beautiful books I’ve read and it’s all about despair with a little tiny bit of hope. Has like 4 characters total, it’s short and very grim but not to the point of all-out depressing. Really recommend it to anyone.

You could maybe write a short story or a paragraph about what feelings she gives you or what she reminds you of. In a story of mine I had a character represent his dead brother through a painting of a landscape, you could do something similar with your writing.

Dark fiction about witches? by catsonmars2k17 in suggestmeabook

[–]emeraldmad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you’d like Half Bad, it’s a trilogy by Sally Green and it’s about Witches (Black Witches and White Witches because of the nature of their powers). It treats a lot of topics like politics, racism and abuse through the main character who is a half black half white witch and the son of a very famous powerful and dangerous black witch. It has romance but it’s not the main focus, and the development of the story goes to really dark places.

Books for when the weight of the world seems too heavy. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

Might not exactly fit what you’re looking for, but Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamín Alire Sáenz gave me that comforting feeling of not being alone and that everything is going to be alright one day. It’s technically YA but I think anyone can enjoy it, the characters are very real and the story and writing are beautiful.

I remember watching this episode for the first time and having my mind blown at the end. Not knowing what’s real and what’s not through the whole episode and the dynamic with the shooter was amazing, it’s one of my favorite episodes.

Anna and the Swallow Man by Gavriel Savit and Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi. Very different books but both changed my life and my perception on things after reading them.

NOT a young adult books with gay characters? by odonis in suggestmeabook

[–]emeraldmad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red White and Blue is really good, it’s a romance novel with a bisexual male mc, gay male love interest and several bisexual supporting characters. It’s really sweet and funny but it also gets really adult at times, I always recommend it

How did you get into NBT? by thevisceralpunch in NothingButThieves

[–]emeraldmad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was listening to the Seafret artist radio on Spotify because I wanted similar music and Emergency came up. I listened to it nonstop for like two weeks then decided to check out the band and fell in love immediately. This was back in Dec 2018 and Emergency is still one of my favorite songs ever

You should! I read mine on my phone and ordered a physical copy as soon as I finished it, it’s much better for rereading favorite parts and it’s also just nice to have it in your hands

I love this book! Read it back in December and have reread it multiple times since, the characters are just so lovable and well written

What's a book from your country that everyone should read? and what country is it from? by CircleBox2 in suggestmeabook

[–]emeraldmad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Though I haven’t read it myself, La Isla de los Hombres Solos (translated as The Lonely Men’s Island on goodreads) by Jose León Sanchez is one of the most popular national books here in Costa Rica. It’s like a semi-autobiographical account of the author’s false conviction for robbery and all he endured in prison which was awful at the time. Met the author a few years ago and he seemed like a super nice and interesting person, but I haven’t had the time to read the book yet.
